Pride
Pride: Celebrating Diversity & Community | Robin Stevenson
24 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
For LGBTQ people and their supporters, Pride events are an opportunity to honor the past, protest injustice, and celebrate a diverse and vibrant community. The high point of Pride, the Pride Parade, is spectacular and colorful. But there is a whole lot more to Pride than rainbow flags and amazing outfits. How did Pride come to be? And what does Pride mean to the people who celebrate it?

I just recently finished this nonfiction Pride book and absolutely LOVED it! It does a really good job going over the history of the last 50 years, and it also highlights a lot of inspirational members of the queer community! It's a great book to read during Pride month! 💕📚🏳️‍🌈 #PrideMonth

June is LGBTQ+ #Pride Month, and our sister site, #LibraryThing, is celebrating with a themed treasure hunt! Solve the clues to find rainbows (🌈) scattered around the site.

https://www.librarything.com/hunt_2019-06.php

If you're not already on LibraryThing, this is a fun way to get to know the site! Plus there are prizes to be had.

TheBookHippie @Lmstraubie We kept stressing to them that CHILDREN attend this event...their suicide rate is horrific ...maybe it sunk in ... 6y
Trashcanman @TheBookHippie those people are so misguided, they attend every L.A pride with signs saying to repent or go to hell. Such hate in their hearts. It's saddening. 6y
Trashcanman 💛💛💛💛💛 6y
TheBookHippie @Trashcanman seriously the God hates ....bothers me immensely ...ignorant fear mongers 😡 6y
AmyG I will never understand the use of God to justify hate. Love is love. It‘s all beautiful. 💛🧡❤️💚💙💜 (edited) 6y
AlaMich At the Chicago parade a couple of years ago we saw them...their little group was back against a building and right in front of them, right at the curb, was a different small group. This group had signs saying something to the effect of, we‘re Christian and we‘re sorry that other Christians behave in such an unchristian way. It was interesting. 6y
TheBookHippie @AlaMich we brought our Bibles and asked them to show us where it says God hates....they didn't come this year... 6y

I love that this youth (age 10-up) nonfiction about Pride includes lots of young people in historical and world contexts. For example, trans woman Sylvia Rivera, who was in the first Stonewall riot, was kicked out of home and living on the street at age 10. A 12-yr-old Canadian has filed a human rights complaint arguing for removal of gender designations from all birth certificates. Lots of bright photos celebrate diversity. 💚💛❤️💜💙

Russian law bans any public displays of LGBTQ culture. At the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, 14 activists were arrested on opening day alone. Why? "Ten of them waved rainbow flags in Moscow's Red Square. The other four held up a sign quoting the Olympic Charter's ban on any form of discrimination."

Bibliogeekery Are you enjoying this book? I'm curious about it #queerbooks 7y
Lindy @Bibliogeekery It's very well done. Although aimed at kids and young teens, there's plenty for adult readers to appreciate. 7y
Bibliogeekery Thanks! Great! Gonna check it out 7y
ReadingEnvy I'm concerned for Russia... This move and then this year they overturned their equivalent of the Violence Against Women act. 7y

Bibliogeekery Such a great quote! ❤️ 7y
Lindy @Bibliogeekery A few months ago, @DeborahSmall raised a discussion regarding use of the label Queer in North America vs the UK. In this book it's used as an umbrella term, while recognizing that for some "the word is too strongly associated with memories of taunts and aggression." 7y
Bibliogeekery Yeah. It's an often discussed thing here too. While some folks (like me) like the reclamation of the word and the inclusivity of the term (no matter how many letters you add to that alphabet soup someone still gets left out 😉) other people don't like the older, regressive associations (and I get that too). Words are complicated and imperfect. 7y

Lindy @Bibliogeekery That's why I took particular notice of this quote from Daisy Hernandez. Words often being a compromise. 👍 7y
Bibliogeekery @Lindy yeah! Such a good one! Thanks for posting it! I'm going to write it down. 🙂 7y
DeborahSmall @Lindy @Bibliogeekery I still struggle with the word 'queer' too many bad memories associated with my brother and sister being bullied. I've talked to them about the whole 'reclaiming' of a derogatory word used to abuse their sexuality, they just won't have it. So for me, it will always be LGBT 🏳️‍🌈💚 7y
Bibliogeekery @DeborahSmall whatever works best for you! I identify as queer myself - it's the term that best works for me and my sexuality 🙂 7y
DeborahSmall @Bibliogeekery I totally understand and love the effect that reclaiming a word that has caused so much pain has had. My brother was stabbed outside a gay club and the bastard that attacked him called him a queer faggot or faggot queer. So I understand my brothers reluctance to embrace that change. As I said to @Lindy before I think it is also to do with time my brother is 35 and my sister almost 33. Although they find the word offensive 7y
DeborahSmall They have said that in Glasgow the word is used with the younger generation in a positive way. 7y
Lindy @DeborahSmall I'm glad to hear that an attitude shift is happening in Glasgow. I hope that young people will influence larger society for the better. 🌈 7y
Bibliogeekery @DeborahSmall I'm truly sorry that your brother (and so many of us) have experienced that kind of hateful, homophobic violence. It's despicable. I am a psychotherapist who works in the queer community so I hear these kind of horrific stories most days. Ugh. The world. Sending love and rainbow solidarity (by whatever name) to you and your family. 💞 7y
DeborahSmall @Bibliogeekery Thank you. And to you too, a hard but very rewarding vocation you have 🏳️‍🌈💕 7y
DeborahSmall @Lindy ❤️😘hugs as always 7y
Bibliogeekery @DeborahSmall hard and rewarding indeed! It breaks my heart and gives me hope daily. People are so strong! 💪💞 7y
geodynamical_nonfiction I live in Austin, TX where it's celebrated to be weird. We have a pride radio station, and, while I don't tell people this, I consider myself queer... In the sense that I am not totally straight, nor totally gay nor bi nor pan... I'm just odd with nontraditional fantasies. I use queer as an umbrella term, but I know being queer isn't normal in the neighboring counties... Keep Austin Weird! 7y

Youth activism has always influenced issues of social justice, and Pride shares the true stories of young people who did that for the #LGBT+ community. Fiction can also relate truths that help readers see themselves and create compassion.
