Cold Earth
Cold Earth: A Shetland Mystery | Ann Cleeves
35 posts | 28 read | 16 to read
From Ann Cleeves, winner of the CWA Diamond Dagger Award, comes Cold Earth. In the dark days of a Shetland winter, torrential rain triggers a landslide that crosses the main road and sweeps down to the sea. At the burial of his old friend Magnus Tait, Jimmy Perez watches the flood of mud and water smash through a house in its path. Everyone thinks the home is uninhabited, but in the wreckage he finds the body of a dark-haired woman wearing a red silk dress. Perez soon becomes obsessed with tracing her identity and realizes he must find out who she was and how she died. Cold Earth is the seventh book in the beloved Shetland series, which is now a major success for the BBC.

My first Ann Cleves. This was a slow burn but I really liked it by the end. The time we spend with the characters & landscape pays off as they feel real & I was invested in them as the mystery took shape. I‘ve heard Cleves doesn‘t plot so I wonder if that‘s why the book starts gently & doesn‘t feel like it has a strong direction until part-way through. The community & relationships rang true. A satisfying read.

Maybe the best Shetland book yet. So sad that I only have one left to read. I had lots of suspects, but it turned out that none of them was the killer. So many twists and turns! Great plot, beloved characters, and, having watched the series, I can picture the beautiful setting. Recommend as always. I have no cold weather pictures, but I do have rain, which is definitely in keeping with the story.

Picked up my library hold yesterday. The website for hubby‘s new doctor actually suggests bringing a book, since he tends to spend a lot of time with patients and get behind. I appreciate their honesty, as well as the reading time.

This was one of my favorites of the series. Starting with a landslide at a funeral that uncovers a body in a nearby Croft that was thought to be abandoning, Perez has to discover who the victim is what happened to her. I cannot believe there is only one more book left for me to read! Luckily I have the entire Vera to look forward to.

StellaB I enjoyed this one, too, I agree the plot was really well crafted. I personally prefer Vera to these, so hopefully you‘ll have lots to look forward to 🙂 2y
Jas16 @StellaB I am so happy to hear that and even more happy that I have already purchased the entire series! 2y

First book finished for #20in4! 4.5 hours of reading. Perfect timing too, as I need it to be an early night. Tomorrow after we get back I‘ll start a new one. I loved this book; the way the story unfolds is dreamlike. It‘s a book to savor, which is an odd thing to say about a mystery, but there you are. Just a terrific series. Another book crossed off my #BookSpinBingo card!

We finally got some rain!

I‘m definitely in, and I‘ll be reading a lot two of the three days, so we‘ll see how it goes! Saturday we have a trip north for my sister-in-law‘s funeral, but tomorrow and especially Sunday are dedicated to books. I‘ve had a good reading month, and it‘s helped a lot. Life is bittersweet, gotta concentrate on the sweet and on the now.

Andrew65 So difficult, we lost my wife‘s mother in law in January with COvID, reading does help at those times. Sending you strength for the funeral. 😘 3y
MittenGirlPeach @Andrew65 thank you so much, Andrew! Reading definitely helps, as does Litsy. 🧡 3y

I‘ve been reading a lot this past month, as shown by my #BookSpinBingo card. But it‘s been a tough month, albeit with bright spots. I got 💉 no 1 two weeks ago & my husband got 💉 no 2 a week ago. But the day after my first 💉 my dear sister-in-law died. She‘d had chronic health issues but was only 58. My brother and I lost our parents as teens and we‘ve always been close. But he‘s doing reasonably well, & here we all are. Love, hug, and be kind.

MittenGirlPeach I‘ve also read a couple of Banks mysteries that weren‘t on my card, and I‘m way behind on reviews. But a bingo is in sight! 3y
TheAromaofBooks Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss!! Even when it isn't “unexpected“ it's still unexpected. 😥 Hopefully you are all able to spend some time together as family & sharing memories. ❤ 3y
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks thank you SO much, Sarah. We had a good visit last Friday, and we‘ll be together for a small service on Saturday. There‘s so much hope right now, and I‘m so sorry Elaine won‘t be here to enjoy it with us. She loved to read! I bought her books every Christmas. Happy memories. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am so sorry for your loss. You send your family are in my thoughts. 💛 3y

A miracle of lockdown- I read a book in a day 😁 wasn‘t working today which made it possible of course. Another great one in this series, which I‘ve nearly finished.

I also watched Atonement with my daughter 😢😢 didn‘t hit me as hard as the book, but still sad and infuriating.
A productive non work day.

This is the first Ann Cleeves I've read, although I have watched the TV adaptation of the Shetland books. This is the 7th in the series but it's careful to recap the characters' backstories as it goes along. It's not outstanding, but is a good murder mystery, with likable characters ⭐⭐⭐

PuddleJumper The TV series is better. I like the changes they made to some characters and relationships and I thought they made it feel more connected to the uniqueness of Shetland. The books, for me, were quite flat. 4y

I love this series! Always a solid mystery with a twist I didn't see coming. Love the language of Ann Cleeves writing style and learning Shetland words like Knapping - losing the accent for the benefit of Soothmoothers - those not native to Shetland. I hope when I visit no one Knapps for me. #shetland #bookishtravels #teaandbooks

Starting Cold Earth by Ann. Cleeves, Book 7 in the superb Shetland Series by Ann Cleeves. I love the remote location and the characters and feel of community within the book. I love spending time with Jimmy Perez. If you can‘t tell in thoroughly recommend this series. #shetland

These will be my books for the #24in48 Readathon. I will be starting in around 2 hours at midnight and reading midnight UK time on Friday/Saturday to Midnight Sunday/Monday. Don‘t think I will get to 24 hours but let‘s see how much I do clock up. Strategy : Physical books when I am awake enough, Audiobook (The Pillars Of The Earth) when too tired to physically read or am driving. Already part way into three of these.

eanderson I haven‘t read anything by Ann Cleves but I‘ve seen good reviews! I‘ll have to give them a whirl. 6y

I really enjoyed this book, I have seen the series, Shetland, which is very dark & moody and helped set the scene reading the book as the Shetland islands are very different to where I live now or grew up. The book & the series are not miles apart & I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

Bk7 in the Shetland series. Not as good as previous ones, it felt a bit rushed I think, but still a pick for me. I read them more for the atmosphere and the beautiful descriptions of life in Shetland, it's so hard to find great stories based in the Scottish Isles, either Shetland, the Orkneys or the Hebrides. Jimmy Perez is at Magnus Taits funeral when there's a landslide. Rushing down to check, he finds the body of a woman, but was she already dead?

Got to Chapter9 with Flavia but wasn't really feeling it, so I'm switching to the last (so far hopefully) Shetland book, No7 in the series. Attending the funeral of Magnus Tait, DI Perez watches as torrential rain triggers a landslide that sweeps down to the sea. But along with the mud, a body is uncovered. Sounds like another great addition to a fantastic series!

JazzFeathers Well, that's a great premise ^_^ 7y
