Spell of Winter
Spell of Winter | Helen Dunmore
14 posts | 11 read | 21 to read
The inaugural winner of England's prestigious Orange Prize, A Spell of Winter is a compelling turn-of-the-century tale of innocence corrupted by secrecy, and the grace of second chances. Cathy and her brother, Rob, have forged a passionate refuge against the terror of loneliness and family secrets, but their sibling love becomes fraught with danger. As Catherine fights free of her dark present and haunting past, the spell of winter that has held her in its grasp begins to break.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Anyone else read this?

I‘m 3 chapters in and I‘m not sold and reviews seem to be mixed across the board…

Not sure whether to keep going or DNF 🥴

My life is too busy and hectic to waste time reading books that don‘t capture my interest…. 😬

A gothic tale with murder, madness, and sex. It was a disappointing read for me. I just did not get what the author was saying with this novel. 2 🌟 read for me.

I don't know what it is, but me and Helen Dunmore just don't seem to get on with each other. This is a DNF for me. 😒

This edition by Penguin is so tiny! Which means the type inside is pretty small. Wonder how my eyes are going to feel after reading this 👀

Kalalalatja Great cover though 👌 5y

#BookMail Pt3 This one was an impulse buy after seeing it on @SavidgeReads booktube channel. It sounded perfect for this time of year, a turn of the century story of a brother & sister who after being abandoned by their parents, grow up isolated in a decaying mansion in the woods. It has a strong “Flowers In The Attic” vibe with the growing relationship between siblings who have nobody else to turn to. So trigger warning for incest.

SaraFair I ❤️ Simon! It is gorgeous, if even just for decoration! 5y

charl08 Sad news. 8y
andrew61 Very sad, her children's book ingo was a favourite of two of my daughters, and i only recently enjoyed 'exposure', she was capable of diverse and brilliant writing. I also only recently heard her on r4 book programme eloquently talking about her writing, illness and that her writing allowed her to live on for her grandchildren. 8y

So I'm not sure how to review this book. This is really immersive and the writing is beautiful but I can see why some people don't like it. It won the first ever what was called at the time orange prize. This is a book if you like a gothic type novel set in a crumbling house that is really claustrophobic. Will say though there is incest and this isn't a comfortable book in any way. But it is worth a read if you like that style of writing

candyflossramparts The Litsy description makes this book sound like a more literary Flowers in the Attic. Hmmmmmm 🤔 8y
Weaponxgirl @candyflossramparts I've not read that one so I honestly can't tell you but I have heard it described as such. 8y
candyflossramparts Flowers in the Attic was one of those books that every pre-teen girl read when I was younger (for better or worse 😅). I'm intrigued, so I've added it to my stack - I love a gothic! 8y
Weaponxgirl @candyflossramparts gotcha, I may not be reading that one anytime soon then 😉 8y
candyflossramparts Solid choice! 😉 8y

A Spell of Winter was exactly as I thought in terms of the sentiment in the book, but it was NOTHING like I expected in terms of the plot. Have you read it? What did you think about Catherine and Rob?
