Man Tiger
Man Tiger: A Novel | Eka Kurniawan
21 posts | 17 read | 66 to read
A wry, affecting tale set in a small town on the Indonesian coast, Man Tiger tells the story of two interlinked and tormented families and of Margio, a young man ordinary in all particulars except that he conceals within himself a supernatural female white tiger. The inequities and betrayals of family life coalesce around and torment this magical being. An explosive act of violence follows, and its mysterious cause is unraveled as events progress toward a heartbreaking revelation. Lyrical and bawdy, experimental and political, this extraordinary novel announces the arrival of a powerful new voice on the global literary stage. From the Trade Paperback edition.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
It starts at the end - a tragic end that the writer unravels in reverse for us to read as Kurniawan sets the story of two families, interlocked onto each other that we only understand the further into the book we follow and by then we're back at the ending.

This was such a different book from what I usually read that I couldn't help but be drawn in.

My final book for #Booked2020, and I‘m also using it as an early start on #readingasia2021! #Indonesia

This is a short novel that packs a powerful punch. A murder happens in a quiet Indonesian village, perpetrated by a man who has a white tigress residing within. We travel backwards in time to learn the history between two families, and what connects them.

For those doing #pop21, this would be an interesting pick for the magical realism prompt!

alisiakae This fulfills the Set in India or Southeast Asia prompt for #booked2020 4y

BarbaraBB That seems a very good start! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm ...is the book tiny, or is the gnome abnormally large? 😅🤣 4y
alisiakae Also, this book ties well with one of my upcoming 2021 reading goals, which is to read more books in translations. #integrateyourshelf @ChasingOm @emilymdxn 4y
alisiakae @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm 😂 😂 It's kind of a large gnome! @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB I meant to wait until January to read this, but then I wouldn't have finished my last #Booked2020 prompt in time! 😉 4y
Emilymdxn Stacked! I‘m trying so hard to find and line up more books in translation for next year 4y
BarbaraBB We all understand the need to be creative to deal with all those challenges we take upon us 😉! I am going to finish the tagged book on January 1th only to be able to use it for #Booked2021 😂 4y
ChasingOm Nice! I‘m looking to increase those too. 😄 4y

Set in Indonesia, this short novel begins with a vicious murder and then unravels the events that led up to it — including how a young man became possessed by the spirit of a white tiger. I enjoyed it quite a bit, though the book summary stresses the tiger-possession element of the story more than the narrative bears out. It‘s much more about the young man‘s family and daily life in his small town.

I came across this bk when doing an around world challenge after it was short listed for the IB. Whilst there is no ice in Indonesia, the opening of the book is the discovery of a body horribly killed by what is obviously a tiger, however the killer is a boy possessed by female white tiger. As a possible defence i think that he may have been on thin ice.
Still a good read. 🐯

After a week of many DNFs finnally this bookt kept my attention. Despite being short it is a slow read. But so rewarding! It has similar vibe as Marquez and beautiful langugage.

disclaimer: I read the Indonesian version

It's so surprising to find someone who writes as good as Eka Kurniawan. He describes everything in detail, to make you feel the book. The story is unique, not a common story you can easily find in any other books.

Oof. A wonderfully written but brutal novel about a family ravaged by the cycle of personal pain and domestic violence, and the wild savagery that emerges from it.

“It wasn‘t me,” he said calmly and without guilt. “There is a tiger inside my body.”

Man Tiger, by rising Indonesian author Eka Kurniawan, is hard to categorize. There's a gory murder, a supernatural element, a broken marriage, and life in a small Indonesian village. All in under 200 pages.

JustTrish Intriguing . 8y
read_diverse_books Color me interested. I love short books and this one sounds right up by alley. 8y

RealLifeReading @JustTrish @read_diverse_books @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com I second @erzascarletbookgasm 's rec of Beauty is a Wound which was the first Kurniawan I read. It's a bit of an investment at nearly 500 pages but so worth it! 8y

Superb. Margio has a supernatural white tiger inside him that comes out when he's under duress. Margio inexplicably murders a man by biting him, leaving the town baffled by how this was possible & why peaceful Margio resorted to violence. Kurniawan spins an intricately woven tale with magical realism that unravels the mystery of two interlinked families & why Margio killed. He explores betrayal, familial love, impulse, & the monsters inside us. 🐅

Book and dinner. 😀 Holy cow 🐄 this burrito is the size of a small child. Leftovers it is! 🌯

Next book up for #diverseathon is an Indonesian novel about two interlinked families and a young man who appears normal but apparently has a white tiger trapped inside him? I don't know how this works yet but I'll report back. 🐅

This is a fascinating story starting with a murder and then weaving together the events leading up to it. The ending was excellent. I loved Kurniawan's writing style, and the rhythm held up well through translation into English.

(Trigger warnings for graphic violence and domestic abuse)
