If you had to name a statue, any statue, odds are good you'd mention the Statue of Liberty. Have you seen her? She's in New York. She's holding a torch. And she's taking one step forward. But why? In this fascinating, fun take on nonfiction, uniquely American in its frank tone and honest look at the literal foundation of our country, Dave Eggers and Shawn Harris investigate a seemingly small trait of America's most emblematic statue. What they find is about more than history, more than art. What they find in the Statue of Liberty's right foot is the powerful message of acceptance that is essential to an entire country's creation. Can you believe that?

Outstanding children‘s book full of facts about the Statue of Liberty and bright colorful art. Egges focuses on an important detail about the statue‘s right foot, lifting as if to step forward, and why that is important. Beautiful and moving https://cannonballread.com/2023/07/her-right-foot-elcicco/

This book makes me cry every time I read it. It is fabulous. The Statue of Liberty is in motion. Because our story is still being written. Because she is meeting her children out at sea. 💙❤️💙 note: the upper left pic I added, but the other is from the book.

And check out Brother Sun‘s song: Lady of the Harbor for more on this theme. 😉 https://youtu.be/X3gOoySyNlI

Published in 2017, the children's nonfiction book tells the amazing upbringing of an iconic American landmark- the statue of liberty. This is a really great way to tell the history of the statue to the children, with beautiful illustrations and told in a simple manner. Really great for the younger children in your classroom. A great way to introduce vocabulary like immigration and oppression too.

This is best book! Perfect for children (and adults). I learned a ton about the Statue of Liberty that I‘d never heard. It‘s engaging and fascinating and inspiring. It also reminds us of our nation‘s history as a welcoming place for immigrants from all over the world. Just beautiful. Get it for all the children in your life.

5⭐️ Leave it to Eggers to tell a wonderful story! There was a lot I didn‘t know about Lady Liberty. Perfect timing too, it‘s a good dose of xenophobia immunization.

“She is not content to wait. She must meet them in the sea.”

Such a shame this wasn‘t written when I was in middle school! I could have used this for my 8th grade history project. Paper mached + a Barbie doll = one crafty Statue of Liberty! #tdscampread18

@Kaye I received your book mark and card and they are lovely. I love 3D bookmarks. And it matches the book I tagged!

Kaye Glad you got it. I was trying to get a bookmark to match the colors in the card. I‘m noticing all the folks in here that color-coordinate bookmarks with books. I‘m lacking in that area so need to step up my game. 👍🏼 6y

I love the way Eggers is talking to his intended audience! My daughter (9) enjoyed every bit of this book.

“Your friends and teachers will be astounded. They will be impressed. They might think you are fibbing.”

LapReader Afternoon, Your Penpal Allissa here. I recently visited the home town in France of the person that designed the statue and have a picture of myself with a fake statue which they have in the centre of a roundabout there. I also have a step daughter who is 9 her name is Linnéa. My email is allissanalder@yahoo.com.au I can‘t wait to hear from you soon. 6y

I finished this fun but interesting #childrens #nonfiction book today about the Statue of Liberty. I liked the #history and asp found the theory about her foot intriguing. On an odd note, I read a short story not too long ago about the Statue of Liberty taking a walk through NYC.

5⭐️Yes the book is heavy on the history of Lady Liberty but it does so with cheek and sass. the story changes halfway to focus specifically on her right foot, and how she is preparing to walk away. where is she walking? To welcome new people to this land. The story focuses on her symbolism a friend to immigrants. A fantastic book that is the perfect lesson on who this country was and what our forefathers believed.

Cinfhen Dave Eggers??? Cool 😎 7y
