Beguiled: A Novel (Movie Tie-In)
Beguiled: A Novel (Movie Tie-In) | Thomas Cullinan
The basis for the major motion picture directed by Sofia Coppola--named best director at the Cannes Film Festival for The Beguiled--and starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning "[A] mad gothic tale . . . The reader is mesmerized with horror by what goes on in that forgotten school for young ladies." --Stephen King, in Danse Macabre Wounded and near death, a young Union Army corporal is found in the woods of Virginia during the height of the Civil War and brought to the nearby Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies. Almost immediately he sets about beguiling the three women and five teenage girls stranded in this outpost of Southern gentility, eliciting their love and fear, pity and infatuation, and pitting them against one another in a bid for his freedom. But as the women are revealed for what they really are, a sense of ominous foreboding closes in on the soldier, and the question becomes: Just who is the beguiled?

Book 21/2021. Finished 22/1/21 ⭐️⭐️ #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks
This has been on my shelf since I bought it home from the airport in 2017, original plane ticket still at page 30, over the last couple of weeks I have taken it everywhere to try and finish it - and it was a chore let me tell you. This pic was taken at one of the many doctors visits this month. Will not be going back on the shelf

A wounded Union officer is found near a seminary for young ladies in Virginia. He begins to vie for the young ladies‘, and the matrons‘, affections. All the women, in turn, show how they really feel...

I‘ve yet to read the book but have seen both movies (Clint Eastwood‘s version is way more sinister and creepy...my preferred of the two). #YoureSoVain #MarchIntoThe70s

Cinfhen I only recognize Nicole Kidman & Kirsten Dunst ~ who‘s the third actress?? 6y

A wounded Union soldier ends up in a southern school for girls and quickly tries to beguile his female captors. The females become suspicious and jealous of each other as they secretly vie for the soldier‘s affections in this gothic, southern novel. #shelovesyou #youretheonethatiwant #juneitselectrifying #heyjune

#filmofthebook

A pretty faithful adaptation of the book from what I remember. Gorgeously filmed and captures the brooding, gothic atmosphere and the power shifts brilliantly. Shame they left the maidservant out as she was a great character. I have one more criticism which is going as a spoiler below.

ladyonequestion In the book there were some hints that John wasn't who he said he was, which I thought was an interesting aspect that the film didn't explore. 7y

A library read from last year, just spotted this on Now TV. Might give it a go. I don't think I loved the novel, I think I thought it was ok.

Ugh pass on this. It was so boring. I was so excited for this when I saw the previews for the movie and the book was so drawn out that I don‘t even think I want to see the movie now.

A slow start, but worth it as you get to know the characters. The question becomes: who is “the beguiled”? The young, innocent-seeming girls? Or the charming Irish soldier recovering in their boarding school? The answer is up to interpretation, making this book worth the read.

It has taken me forever to finish reading this book. I was busy with other things; however, I think that it still would've been a slow read. I liked it somewhat, but it took too long for something interesting to happen. When that thing finally happened, it was too little and too late in the book. I hate when a book brings all of my reading momentum down to a halt.

#fallintobooks Day 9: #bookmark
@RealLifeReading

Getting ready to read one of my latest acquisitions. Sometimes I just can't control myself and that's why I have an enormous #tbr pile that never gets smaller. I've never heard of this book or the movie but the Civil War setting interested me. I'll use just about anything for a #bookmark: business or appointment cards, post-its, paper scraps, etc. The one pictured is a wooden one from my mom. 😙

I finished this book about a week ago and I loved it! It kept me hooked the entire time. I hoped for a different ending, but I am still satisfied with how it was executed. I can't wait to watch the movie now! 📖🎥

This was a good book but it was definitely a slow read for me. It was interesting but the best part happened towards the end. The over all lesson is that in life we make decisions based on the here and now that we would never make otherwise. It is easy it to seem trapped and without options.

Fascinating and disturbing! When an injured soldier arrives at a girls boarding school the students and teachers each build a relationship with him. They respond in different ways towards him and each other as jealousy and desire are heightened. Cullinan explores the different ages of a woman and the back stories and driving forces behind the characters are revealed. Thought provoking and addictive!

So... I was reminded of the skating fiasco because today I met the same friend at the same shopping center to see this movie. I'm still thinking about it! Imagine #GWTW meets Grey Gardens... as written by Edgar Allan Poe. It irked me though that the trees in "Virginia" had moss hanging from them. But I love Nicole and they showed the trailer for Last Jedi, so there's that.

The new buzzy (& bloody apparently) Sofia Coppola movie is based on a 1960s novel so I gave it a read. Definitely stayed up until after 1am on a work night because I couldn't put it down. There's a horrible, hilarious 10-year old narrator that I particularly loved. I've been reading about Coppola's erasure of slavery & the novel's one black character. After reading the book I have to say it's a very bizzare, disappointing choice. #recommendsday

huntersmom1977 Oh wow! Never knew it was based on a book. Now I'm very intrigued and excited to read it before I see the movie. Thanks for the tip Hun 😊 7y
alisahar @huntersmom1977 no problem! I think it was out of print but they brought it back for the movie. 7y

The Beguiled was a gorgeous movie - a wounded civil war soldier holed up in a remote school for girls sets off a chain of misfortune as the women's infatuation peaks. Couldn't resist stopping off at Barnes & Nobel on the way home to pick up the book. I had no idea this book was originally written in the sixties. Pairing this lush read with some pink coconut cream bonbons. 🍬 #thebegulied #movies

Not everyone seems to be enjoying this movie. However, if you like a slow-moving Southern Gothic Civil War area story, you probably will like this movie. I do and I did.

MyNamesParadise I like looking at Colin Farrell. Lol will I like it? 😜 7y
LisaJo @MyNamesParadise Yes! Yes! If you like looking at Collin Farrell (and who does not), you will have plenty of that in this movie. 😂😂😂😂 (edited) 7y
MaleficentBookDragon I saw the Clint Eastwood version. I was way too young and found it very disturbing. I may give this version a try. I mean, come on, Colin Farrell. 7y
LisaJo @MaleficentBookDragon I fall into that same category. I saw the Clint Eastwood version when I was very young. I didn't understand it, I didn't understand all the themes that were involved. I would like to go back and see it now as an adult. And, see it now after I've seen this new version. Somehow I suspect that older version would come out on top. 7y

New Release Tuesday! Strand didn't have one I wanted (the new Anne Helen Petersen), but I am so excited that The Beguiled ( set during the civil war...a gothic story about a girl's boarding school) is back in print - I have wanted to read it for a while now. And I have heard amazing things about the new Don Winslow (and his last one, which I haven't read either)! Yay books!

BethM What is the beguiled about? There's no descriptionz 8y

Setting: a girls school in Virginia during the Civil War. Two teachers, a slave maid, and five students are holding out in the school trying to live a normal life while battles rage just miles from where they are. A cog is thrown into their attempted normalcy when a student finds a wounded Union soldier in the woods. Each person at the school brings a unique voice to the story as they cope with the addition to their secluded life. #southerngothic
