My May tbr. Decided to really go through my books and read books I‘ve been meaning to read for ages starting with the tagged book. This is just my physical tbr pile, I also have books on loan from the library, a tbr on my kindle and some audiobooks I want to start/finish 😂

Dark stories of evil gangsters aren‘t really my thing. However, the writing style pulled me in, and I wanted to know how things would go once Ida showed her stubbornness.

Lcsmcat Did you know what “Brighton rock” was when you started? I didn‘t, and confess to being very surprised. I had assumed it was a geological rock. 😂 3y
Daisey @Lcsmcat No, I completely thought it was an actual rock until I read your review after posting mine. There was the one scene in the book where he was apparently buying the candy sticks and I was so confused. Maybe I would have better realized it in print, but listening I missed it. 3y
Lcsmcat @Daisey I had to look it up, which sent me down a rabbit hole. Then later, I saw a BBC show on how it‘s made, which was fascinating. Apparently lots of resort areas made this candy with their name in it. 3y
CarolynM I'm a relatively recent convert to Graham Greene but I've been reluctant to try this one because of that gangster thing. You make me think I should pick it up anyway. 3y

In some ways a tale of despair, with Brighton Rock as a metaphor for how things don‘t change. No matter where you break it off it still says “Brighton Rock.” Greene‘s grasp of prose makes it a pleasure to read, even though the lives you‘re reading about are bleak. And the there‘s the indefatigable Ida, who brings a note of hope.

Finally getting around to his. I read the first two chapters over lunch, and I‘m intrigued.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Been in the ol‘ TBR forever!! Should I bump up? 4y
Gezemice On my list, too! Read two so far by Greene and loved them. 4y
Lcsmcat @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I‘m only 2 chapters in, but I‘d say yes. 4y
Lcsmcat @Gezemice This is only my second novel by him, but the first real professional play I saw, in London when I was 14, was his 4y
CarolynM I'm a recent convert to Greene, but I've been avoiding this one. I look forward to your thoughts when you've finished it. 4y

Today was Graham Greene‘s Birthday (1904-1991)
I haven‘t read the tagged book , but love the cover!
I have read the Third Man and watched the incredible film with Orson Wells and Joseph Cotten.Greene and director Reed argued about the ending,Greenes‘ preference was a happier more upbeat ending as in his novella, but Reed was backed by David O. Selznick so film and book end differently.

CarolynM I've become a Graham Greene fan in the last year. I haven't read them all by any means but I've loved The Quiet American and Our Man in Havana. 4y
Leftcoastzen @CarolynM I think I‘ve read the Quiet American, need to read more Greene 4y

I read this several years ago & although I have forgotten a few of the details, the seaside setting was unforgettable. Greene dubbed this as one of his entertainments, & while it undeniably contains elements of the contemporary thriller, the issues raised of morality & sin add a bit more heft than one would expect from his term.

I agree with Anthony Burgess that Greene was a good novelist, but not a great one. Still, I'm drawn to his work. I had trouble really getting into this one for the first half, but after that it reads just as suspenseful as any of Greene's other thrillers. The protagonist is essentially an anti-hero whose end is immensely satisfying, but the ultimate end of the novel plants a seed of horror for the reader.

The book is so bad that I even don't care about a picture👿👿👿 I pushed it to the end because I tried to answer two questions: 1. Why my book club fellow chose it, 2. Why it's considered classic. I did not find the answers. The prose is pathetic, the storyline is boring, the characters are dumb. I truly hate the book, and there is no a thing that I may like. The worst read in 2017🙁☠️👿🙈

Pinkie is a great villain and if id remembered id have put it in the psychopath thread. Trademark razor and bottle of acid in his pocket meant he was truly menacing and Graham greene added virginity and religion to the mix to add to his insecurities. Anyway 2 cinematic images of his scar.

This book grabbed my attention early on, then got sort of slow in the middle, and picked back up for a strong finish. I don't think it would have taken this long to read if I hadn't struggled with staying focused in the middle.

Dark and gritty, and I wasn't especially fond of the way the female characters were portrayed, but a well-written and interesting story. My first Greene - won't be my last. 😃

sprainedbrain @TheKidUpstairs My Cardinals are not off to a great start, but I do agree... your boys do need a win. I'm just not sure how I feel about them winning these next three. 😉 7y
TheKidUpstairs @sprainedbrain well, good luck to the Cards for the rest of the season. We'll just agree to disagree on this particular series. Although, tbh I'm not feeling all that confident today with our catcher starting at 3rd (really, who does that? Only Gibby). PS: great book choice! 7y
sprainedbrain @TheKidUpstairs Good luck to the Blue Jays, too! I have always liked them... you have Bautista! Is Salty not your normal catcher? I always think of him as belonging to @rachel_mbc and her Red Sox. 😃 7y
JPrecht Girl, you are living your best life tonight! 7y
TheKidUpstairs @sprainedbrain I didn't know anyone who wasn't a Jays fan like Bautista 😁 Salty is our back up catcher. I still think of him as a Red Sox player too! Martin is our #1. 7y

A gang war is raging through the dark underworld of Brighton. Seventeen-year-old Pinkie, malign and ruthless, has killed a man. Believing he can escape retribution, he is unprepared for the courageous, life-embracing Ida Arnold. This book aims to expose a world of loneliness and fear, of life lived on the 'dangerous edge of things'. #bookishtravels #booktomovie

I put this on my #classicsclub50 because I fell in love with Brighton England "on a holiday" and wanted to read something set there plus Graham Green intrigues me. I have read The Quiet American back when my tbr was tiny and I was reading books before the movie. (Because Brendan Fraser.)

This book so far has me befuddled and may give-up on it... (I didn't realize it has a predecessor book that explains the setup.) should I keep going?

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Im also intrigued by this book - bummed to hear it's difficult. I didnt know there was a prior set-up book either. 7y
