Why Kill the Innocent
Why Kill the Innocent | C. S. Harris
29 posts | 17 read | 18 to read
In the newest mystery from the national bestselling author of Where the Dead Lie, a brutal murder draws Sebastian St. Cyr into the web of the royal court, where intrigue abounds and betrayal awaits. London, 1814. As a cruel winter holds the city in its icy grip, the bloody body of a beautiful young musician is found half-buried in a snowdrift. Jane Ambrose's ties to Princess Charlotte, the only child of the Prince Regent and heir presumptive to the throne, panic the palace, which moves quickly to shut down any investigation into the death of the talented pianist. But Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife Hero refuse to allow Jane's murderer to escape justice. Untangling the secrets of Jane's world leads Sebastian into a maze of dangerous treachery where each player has his or her own unsavory agenda and no one can be trusted. As the Thames freezes over and the people of London pour onto the ice for a Frost Fair, Sebastian and Hero find their investigation circling back to the palace and building to a chilling crescendo of deceit and death . . .

1814. The contrast between high society, the”ton” & the extreme poverty of the masses is the backdrop of the mystery. The corpulent, egotistical, narcissistic, greedy, malevolent Prince Regent is in power. It‘s a winter like no other:extreme cold, constant snow storms,& huge snow banks all over the city. This creates a bleak, dank, dark atmosphere.
A bloodied body of a woman with close ties to the Court is found dead in a in a snowbank🔽

kspenmoll 🔼While the Court declares her death an accident, St. Cyr, a Bow Street Runner( police) & Viscount, & his wife Hero think differently.Their pursuit of the responsible one, involves them in treacherous Court intrigue, illegal smuggling, conspiracies,& death threats. The wide range of characters & the depth at which they are written adds to the mix. #14booksin14weeks #1 (edited) 10mo

It took me over a year to finish this book. It has nothing to do with the quality of the book but just because of life. I finally caved and got it on Audiobook and I'm glad I did.

This was another solid entry into this series. I didn't guess the killer until end. I wish there had been more dedicated Sebastian and Hero's relationship but maybe into he next book. #audiobook #scribd #historicalfiction #historicalmystery

Regency era mysterious death leads to a crazy investigation that is linked to English palace intrigue.
A decent story, though a lot of the dialogue felt a little robotic at times. Fun historical references and a genuinely surprising "who done it," I really wasn't sure how Jane died.
Nothing to write home about, but it was good book.

The latest in the Sebastian St. Cyr series, this had a plethora of suspects and lots of red herrings...just almost to the point where I was like "Can we just pick someone already?" Despite that, the main murder story was very well done. Harris always gives an interesting B story as well this time focusing on military press gangs and those left behind. A unique setting of London's last Frost Fair plus all else makes this a great read.

dsfisher There was no shortage of potential suspects. An excellent read. 6y

Not as good a month as March, but I had some great reads (five 4.5-5 star books), plus I finally finished M&M, so I‘m satisfied. 5 ebooks, 4 print, 2 audiobooks for a total of 2649 pages, 21 hours and 31 minutes. I also have four books currently in progress. Tagged book was my favorite.

Harris has written another wonderful Regency mystery with some of my favorite characters. Hero stumbles upon the corpse of a woman who turns out to be the piano teacher to Princess Charlotte. Was her death an accident or was she murdered? The Palace wants her death hushed up. Does that mean Hero‘s father is involved? Filled with political intrigue, danger, and an impressive body count, this was a great addition to the series.

Another good story with Sebastian and his wife Hero working to solve the mystery of a piano teacher‘s death. A time of great hardship for most of the citizens during terrible snowfalls and freezing temperatures. Lots of threads to follow.

OK, this got a double sticker...you know it MUST be good!!! 🤣🤣🤣 The plot was absorbing, the historical details spot-on...this author continues to amaze me. I think the true test of a good book is its ability to be played out vividly in your mind like a movie. This series does that. I ❤️ these characters! I cannot recommend this series highly enough...all the ⭐️s!!! If you try it, please start at the beginning. Thanks to #Berkley for the ARC!❤️

BibliophileMomma Well you‘ve convinced me I need to read it. Stacked. 6y
Bklover This sounds really good!!! 6y
robinb @Tiffy_Reads 🤣🤣 This is number 13 (out 4/3). The series begins with this tagged one, and I really do recommend starting at the beginning. There‘s great world/character building here, and I think you get so much more insight into both by starting out where it began. 6y

robinb @Bklover it‘s really become one of my very favorite series! So good! 6y
DivineDiana You convinced me! Stacked the first one! 😉 6y
robinb @DivineDiana yay!!! Hope you‘ll love it too! 6y
DGRachel I am so looking forward to this one! It‘s one of the few series that I‘m actually current with and read the next book typically within a month of its release! @Tiffy_Reads @Bklover @DivineDiana I just want to add my voice to @robinb - definitely start at the beginning. There‘s a lot of backstory that makes the later books so much richer, but only if you know where the characters are coming from. 6y
robinb @DGRachel thanks!!! When I won the lottery for this ARC, it was like Christmas and my birthday all rolled up into one! 🤣🤣🤣🎉🎉🎉 But yes, seriously, this is the series I‘m ALWAYS recommending to historical mystery lovers, and ALWAYS recommend starting at the beginning...you‘ll want to get every juicy tidbit of the backstories. 😉😉 (edited) 6y

It‘s time to bite the bullet. 😩😔
I‘ve had this ARC for awhile but have been delaying reading it. It‘s the latest in one of my favorite series, and I was putting off facing a long wait for the next in series (14th) to appear by holding on to this one. But I can‘t procrastinate any longer...it‘s due out April 3. So I‘m both excited 😆 and sad 😢 to jump into the further adventures of Sebastian St. Cyr. 🤷🏻‍♀️ OK, yeah I‘m also weird! 🤣🤣

LeahBergen I save books all the time. 😆 6y
robinb @LeahBergen Thanks for making me feel better! 😊 If I didn‘t need to review it, I might not ever read it! 🤣🤣🤣 6y

Thanks for the tag @JenlovesJT47 !
#TuesdayTidbits

1. Superman. Not very original (I don‘t read many comics). 🤷🏻‍♀️
2. Sebastian St. Cyr (tagged is latest in series)
3. Jack Traven (Speed) or John Wick (I see a theme here!) 🤣🤣🤣
4. Al Swearengen (Deadwood tv series, played by the amazing Ian McShane)
5. Ethan Hunt (Mission Impossible) - This was hard! Chose him because I‘m not a fan of the movies. 🤷🏻‍♀️
6. @ForeverNerdy @Andrew65

TheLibrarian Biggest crush on Keanu as John Wick! 6y
JenlovesJT47 Omg I LOVE Al from Deadwood!! I remember how much I hated him the first few episodes but Ian's acting is so amazing that he made him a very 3-dimensional character and not just straight evil. Deadwood is one of the greatest shows of all time! 💚💚💚 6y
robinb @TheLibrarian He‘s so great!! Those movies are over-the-top violent, but he makes them bearable. ❤️ (edited) 6y
See All 20 Comments
robinb @JenlovesJT47 Isn‘t Ian McShane simply the greatest?! I had that love/hate relationship with him too...the mark of a well-written, well-acted character. Just remembered he was also in Wick too...two themes there! 🤣🤣 I still miss Deadwood...so many wonderful performances in that series! ❤️ 6y
JenlovesJT47 I haven't seen John Wick yet!! 😳 Might have to get the hubby to watch it with me tonight, we were just talking about it the other day. And I totally agree about Deadwood!! 💚💚💚 6y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Ethan Hunt is an overrated hero. He‘s always figuring things out to late in my opinion. When it was obvious the entire time! 😂 My husband loves those movies, so I‘ve watched them but don‘t like them. It‘s what I get for making him watch Remains of the Day, P&P, and every other chick flick! 😜🤣🤣🤣 Great post ❤️ 6y
robinb @ForeverNerdy oh I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who thinks so! Thanks! That was a tough one for me. The things we put up with for marital harmony, right??! 🤷🏻‍♀️😆🤣🤣 6y
robinb @JenlovesJT47 just be warned...they‘re both ultra violent. My husband and I had to look up the body count for both movies because it was so over-the-top. 😳😳😳 6y
CoffeeK8 @JenlovesJT47 deadwood was the best! Al was amazing, so bad yet so compelling! 6y
JenlovesJT47 @CoffeeK8 exactly! And I love Deadwood, ready to have another marathon! I'm still sad it ended so abruptly 😭 6y
CoffeeK8 @JenlovesJT47 I‘m holding out hope for a movie revival or something! 6y
robinb @CoffeeK8 @JenlovesJT47 Something else that I loved about Deadwood was how often do you get a stellar cast like that??!!! I mean the ensemble was spot-on in all their roles!!! And yes, I would soooo love to see a follow-up of some kind. That was the epitome of #MustWatchTV! 😊👍 6y
JenlovesJT47 @robinb @CoffeeK8 I agree, excellent cast! They've been talking about making a movie for ages, but since Powers Boothe died recently (😭love him so much, especially in Tombstone, still can't believe he's gone!😭), I don't know if that's out the window now or not. Have you watched Justified? Timothy Olyphant is amazeballs if I do say so myself! 😍 (edited) 6y
robinb @JenlovesJT47 I know, I loved Boothe as well, so good in everything he did! And Olyphant in Justified? Don‘t even get me started! ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏 6y
JenlovesJT47 Raylan Givens is one of the sexiest and most badass male characters ever on TV!! 😍😍😍 Have you watched Hell on Wheels? Anson Mount is right there with him! (The character he plays. Sigh. So swoonworthy😍) 6y
robinb @JenlovesJT47 I think you and I must be twins (except for the fact that you‘re much taller and younger than I am...darn it!) 😆😆😆😳 Yes, LOVED HOW (especially Mount!) as well...another wonderful cast there too! 6y
JenlovesJT47 Yes! If you tell me you like Mad Men then I'll know we were separated at birth! 😁 6y
robinb @JenlovesJT47 OK, tbh I did not keep up with Mad Men. What I saw of it was good, but I wasn‘t a die-hard fan. Oh well, I always wanted a sister, but I guess you can‘t have everything, right?! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤣🤣 6y
JenlovesJT47 Lol well if we can't be twins, we can at least be sisters! 😅 we definitely have a lot in common. Mad Men is my favorite show, I'm currently rewatching it for the 6th time! 😳 Jon Hamm is SO 😍😍😍😍😍😍😋😋😋😋 6y
robinb @JenlovesJT47 Oh definitely! And believe me, I have NOTHING against Jon Hamm! 😁😁😍 6y
