“Margaret thought the world cruel for seeing her as the negative version of her sister, yet it was also how she came to define herself.”

So I don‘t know why I read this, BUT it was eye opening. Someone should write a fictional version of the differences between Queen Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret. One is all wellies, head scarves, mud and horses. The other is drinking and parties and well- heeled bohemians. One projects the picture of decorum; the other will invite someone to a party just for the oppty to humiliate them publicly. “Frozen” has nothing on this pair.

Very weird. Strangely hard going too considering the wealth of gossip it contained. The fictional inserts were the weirdest - especially as someone who hasn‘t read a “proper” biography of Margaret. Odd.

I thought because I watched season one of “The Crown” I would like “99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret.” Reader, I did not. I didn‘t always understand what was going on, and I didn‘t really like the author‘s snarky tone (although maybe I would have, if I knew what he was snarking). The whole book reads as Poor Little Rich Girl meets Mean Biographer-with a whole lot of filler thrown in. Not for me.

After having watched “The Crown”, I wanted to know more about Princess Margaret. This biography does not paint a flattering picture of the Princess. Through the stories told here, she seems rude, demanding, the dinner guest from hell and someone who would use the benefits of her title whenever she felt like it. If possible, her husband is portrayed even worse than her, and especially towards her. After having read this, I‘m glad I never met her.

AnneCecilie And then after having read about Princess Margaret‘s less than nice personality, Brown suddenly tells how she would visit the son of one of her lady-in-waiting diagnosed with Aids in the 80s. Then we‘re told that she would hug him and bring her kids with her. A great reminder than no one is just one thing. 6y

#frideas cities edition

1. A picture of my favorite city, Paris, taken the last time I visited

2. Mostly London (tagged the book)

3. Paris, but I‘m not sure I would want to live there. Living in Norway isn‘t so bad actually

4. I‘m a big city person

5. I live in Norway

SailorMoon Thanks for playing!!! 🥰 I wish I could visit Norway someday, I have loved the Northern Countries I've visited so far and I'm sure I'd love yours too! Is it really cold where you live right now? 6y
AnneCecilie @SailorMoon I don‘t know which countries you‘ve visited, but both Denmark and Sweden are great. Temperature is relative, I don‘t think it‘s too bad now. It‘s -2 C and the converter tells me that‘s 28 F. It‘s January so the temperature could be a lot worse 6y
SailorMoon I've been to Sweden, Denmark and Finland... so I'm probably missing just Norway! But I'll travel there someday, hopefully! Well it's not that bad, I live in Italy and we have days where we're below 0 too! Although we've been having a pretty warm January this year... today was around 13°! 6y
AnneCecilie @Sailormoon I love Italy and I‘ve visited Venice, Florence and the Puglia region. I‘d love to visit Rome some day. If we ever get 13 degrees in Norway during the winter season something is seriously wrong, and 13 degrees with sun in the spring means that people will sit outside in the sun drinking beer. The famous «utepils». 6y
SailorMoon Rome is magnificent! But I mean, so are Venezia and Firenze!!! The Puglia region has a wonderful sea, plus I love what it's there to eat!!! As for the 13° here it depends on the region... but we do wear coats still with that temperature 😅 nice talking to you! Have a good night! 6y

"It was her duty and destiny to be dull, to be as useful and undemonstrative as a postage stamp." Never heard Her Majesty described quite that way before ? #Royallygoodreads #royalbiography

GingerAntics Her Majesty is actually Queen Elizabeth II, being a style for the monarch. Princess Margaret would have been HRH (in this case her royal highness, but it can also be his royal highness). 6y
anhistorianabouttown @GingerAntics I know that 🙂 The author was explaining the differences in personality between the more steadfast HM and volatile HRH! 6y
GingerAntics Oh okay. I didn‘t understand that was actually a quote about her sister. Margret was definitely the more lively sister when they were younger. 6y
anhistorianabouttown I would say that is true for their entire lives haha! They both fulfilled very different purposes but I think it suited them each 😀 6y

#crucifymyheart #septemberdanes @Cinfhen @Kalalalatja Princess Margaret! Her love affairs were tragic. She was not allowed to live with or marry her first love, Captain Peter Townsend (he was divorced); and he was reassigned to a more remote position. Her 2nd time around ended in divorce. Really want to read this book.

Kalalalatja That does sound tragic! 💔 6y
Velvetfur I didn't like this and bailed halfway through, maybe because it was the audiobook, maybe I should have read rather than listened and it might have made more sense then. I read another review that said it was a satire, so i just couldn't trust anything I heard in it! Apart from the stuff we all know like about not marrying Peter Townsend. 6y
Velvetfur [comment #2!] But there's a whole section in this about her marriage to Picasso - which didn't even happen! And then some weird waffle about a letter some bloke wrote to another bloke about the book he'd just had published....nothing to do with Margaret at all! But if you do read it please let me know what you think, you might love it! 😂 6y

Others spoke of Princess Margaret, but I knew next to nothing about her. Brown sweeps up bits and pieces, letters, news reports, diary entries and glues them into a mostly coherent collage of events, and opinions (some say she peaked at age 6) involving the present queen‘s sister.
Now I can say I know who she was.

bookandcat "peaked at age 6"?!?!?!? 6y
Dolly Lol😂That was said because she was 2nd in line to the throne at age 6. As the royal family expanded she dropped down the list. 6y
bookandcat @Dolly 🤣🤣 I thought they meant that she was at her most charming at that age 6y

Dolly @bookandcat I think she was spoilt long before that age. 👶😫 It makes for an entertaining story though. 6y

KateFulfordAuthor Nice read. Have you seen Vanessa Kirby‘s portrayal of her in the Crown? Just extraordinary... 7y
emilyhaldi @Cinfhen the book is nicely formatted into individual segments - each chapter is a different story or tidbit about Margaret so I‘ve just been reading a little at a time. She sounds like she was a total spitfire! And a pain in the ass 😆 7y

I‘ve been watching The Crown & fascinated by Princess Margaret, so this was a great gift. There are some funny excerpts of diaries & letters - she befriended theatre types & as Brown puts it “it was her misfortune that many of them kept diaries”. An insider view of her life from a range of sources. But even if accurate, it‘s an unflattering portrait of an unhappy woman. I was torn between joining in the fun & tiring of the meanness.

saresmoore 1. I want to know how you like this book when you get to it. 2. How is The Crown? I‘ve been verrry tempted to watch it, but didn‘t want to invest if there would be a repeat of the Downton Abbey fiasco. 🙄 (Yeah, I‘m still not over that.) 7y

Mdargusch I think they try to pretend she doesn‘t exist. 7y
Susannah @saresmoore So far, I'm enjoying The Crown. It's not perfect (I have capital-o opinions about how some of the best characters will essentially disappear for entire episodes), but I would definitely recommend watching the first two or three episodes of Season 1 to see what you think. I did not stick with Downton. Why did it disappoint you? 7y
saresmoore @Susannah I think I just got fed up with the perpetual killing off of favorite characters and gave up on it. 7y
Reviewsbylola Great cover! 7y
Susannah @saresmoore Ah, yes. I understand. I watched Downton on and off over the seasons, but for me, the pain inflicted upon Anna and Mr Bates became too much. And I could not understand how Mary got away with being a complete horror so much of the time yet men fell at her feet. I liked Edith more. 7y
batsy I didn't know that about her, either! @Mdargusch That's probably it... 7y
batsy @Susannah @saresmoore I was thoroughly fed up with it being The Mary Show, too. And tired of Edith getting the short end of the stick. 7y
merelybookish @saresmoore The Crown is good. It's slow but interesting and I've learned a ton about historical events I had only vaguely heard of. More episodic than plot-driven. I do feel bad for Princess Margaret. I imagine she's spinning in her grave that Prince Harry is allowed to marry a bi-racial American divorced actress. 7y
Susannah @batsy 👊 ... Poor Edith. 7y
Centique I love The Crown and I‘m not usually interested in royalty - but it‘s so well done! And Matt Smith 😍😍😍 7y
saresmoore @batsy @Susannah Yes! Wholly unfair to Edith, or among our bookish set, “the everywoman”...it doesn‘t help that my mom‘s name is Edith! 7y
saresmoore @merelybookish Haha! Poor Princess Margaret. She only ever saw the short end of a stick. I like slow, historical, & episodic. Thank you! 7y
saresmoore @Centique Oh, I forgot about Matt Smith! What am I waiting for?! He‘s dreamy. My favorite Doctor Who, too. 7y
emilyhaldi @saresmoore I never watched Downtown Abbey!! I'm one of the few... You're the first person I've heard express such distaste. I'm only 3 episodes into the Crown but I agree with the consensus here that it is very interesting- especially to me bc I didn't know so much of the Royal family history!! Such scandal! 7y
saresmoore I‘ve been wanting to learn more about the royal family, so it sounds like an entertaining way to get started! I love me some good historical scandal. 7y
Suet624 @saresmoore I have loved the two seasons of The Crown. The acting is terrific and the scenery is beautiful. There was a lot of historical info in the second season that I didn‘t know. 7y
saresmoore @Suet624 Oh, that‘s great. You know how highly I value your perspective! When I watch it, be prepared for email commentary. :) 7y
