pickSo I don‘t know why I read this, BUT it was eye opening. Someone should write a fictional version of the differences between Queen Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret. One is all wellies, head scarves, mud and horses. The other is drinking and parties and well- heeled bohemians. One projects the picture of decorum; the other will invite someone to a party just for the oppty to humiliate them publicly. “Frozen” has nothing on this pair.
so-soVery weird. Strangely hard going too considering the wealth of gossip it contained. The fictional inserts were the weirdest - especially as someone who hasn‘t read a “proper” biography of Margaret. Odd.

panI thought because I watched season one of “The Crown” I would like “99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret.” Reader, I did not. I didn‘t always understand what was going on, and I didn‘t really like the author‘s snarky tone (although maybe I would have, if I knew what he was snarking). The whole book reads as Poor Little Rich Girl meets Mean Biographer-with a whole lot of filler thrown in. Not for me.

pickAfter having watched “The Crown”, I wanted to know more about Princess Margaret. This biography does not paint a flattering picture of the Princess. Through the stories told here, she seems rude, demanding, the dinner guest from hell and someone who would use the benefits of her title whenever she felt like it. If possible, her husband is portrayed even worse than her, and especially towards her. After having read this, I‘m glad I never met her.

She was not allowed to live with or marry her first love, Captain Peter Townsend (he was divorced); and he was reassigned to a more remote position. Her 2nd time around ended in divorce. Really want to read this book.
Nothing like a lady date with @Caksf to a local university library to spend a few hours reading in silence with all the college kids! 😂 I love this view so much though.
pickOthers spoke of Princess Margaret, but I knew next to nothing about her. Brown sweeps up bits and pieces, letters, news reports, diary entries and glues them into a mostly coherent collage of events, and opinions (some say she peaked at age 6) involving the present queen‘s sister.
Now I can say I know who she was.
This book is soooo hard to get ahold of. I could only find one copy to borrow in all my libraries in Massachusetts. I better get started.
Spending today on the couch alternating between royal wedding coverage (which I woke up at 6am to watch), knitting, and reading about another memorable royal 🙌🏻👑
In honor of the new Prince born today 💙 I‘m giving a nod to this #famous royal, Princess Margaret! She was a fun-loving party girl that cause a bit of trouble as Queen Elizabeth‘s younger sister. Between the royal birth today and the royal wedding next month, it‘s time to move this one into my reading stack!! 👑

so-soI‘ve been watching The Crown & fascinated by Princess Margaret, so this was a great gift. There are some funny excerpts of diaries & letters - she befriended theatre types & as Brown puts it “it was her misfortune that many of them kept diaries”. An insider view of her life from a range of sources. But even if accurate, it‘s an unflattering portrait of an unhappy woman. I was torn between joining in the fun & tiring of the meanness.

With a trip to London coming up, and a recent viewing of The Crown on Netflix, I have been googling the royal family nonstop and am dying to get to this book! Why haven‘t I heard more about Princess Margaret, the fun party girl of the family?! 🥂

@LeahBergen This hot-off-the-shelves book is screaming out for your attention! It‘s extremely irreverent, and I think her Royal Highness probably deserves as much, but it‘s not without its sensitivity, not a complete hatchet job – and oh, is it ever wonderfully acerbic and delicious!
