Why I read this book: found it searching for graphic memoirs in library database

When an explanation so often seems allusive, it always amazes me when an author/artist is able to describe depression so accurately.

Since the fall of last year, I was in a really bad depressive state, one that led me to a recent stay in an inpatient unit. This book was so accurate and really represented depression. I‘m hesitant to refer to my recent episode in the past tense because I‘m still healing, but I am feeling like myself again & I never thought I would feel that way and it‘s truly scary. Please know if you are suffering, you‘re not alone. ❤️

CatLass007 I, too, have suffered from depression and still struggle with it. My advice to anyone dealing with mental illness is to get with a good talk therapist and stay on your meds. 5y
MyNamesParadise @CatLass007 I was always taking my meds and have been in therapy for years and something still wasn‘t cutting it. They adjusted my meds and I am so much better now. 5y
CatLass007 Sometimes, a med adjustment is exactly what you need. But I wasn‘t really specifically referring to you. It was more of a general comment to anyone reading this. I figured you weren‘t referring directly to me but I always like to clarify I‘m doing what I‘m supposed to be doing because during my experience I learned there are so many people that don‘t do those things and it was shocking to me!! I also have a lot of familial support and I saw how a lot of people don‘t have that either which is sad. 5y
CatLass007 It is sad when people don‘t have a good support system either from family or friends. Fortunately, even though both my parents are gone, I still have a lot of friends I can count on. 5y
rretzler @MyNamesParadise @CatLass007 I have struggled with depression for many years as well. And meds are certainly as issue for me - over the years, I have tried several which have become less effective over the years. It seems I can go about 4 years with a medication and then it doesn‘t work well any more. Has that happened to either of you? Currently, the meds that I have been trying have side effects that I can‘t tolerate so I‘m still looking 😞 5y
CatLass007 @rretzler Yes! I currently take Cymbalta and Abilify. But I have taken several others over the course of the years that have either lost their effectiveness or never been effective. 5y
rretzler @CatLass007 Cymbalta was the one that worked most recently for me, but lost its effectiveness. I seem to do better on SNRIs but there aren‘t many of those. 5y

I am having a rough night. My depression is really kicking in tonight. It‘s raining hard and usually it feels cozy but tonight it just feels bleak. Luckily my little sweet kitty is cuddling with me and trying to make me feel better. Usually reading helps but I can‘t even focus on a book tonight 😔 I feel like I am wasting a precious weekend day.

AlaMich I know that feeling well. We can‘t choose our bad days. I try to remember that I wouldn‘t kick a friend when she‘s down by telling her she‘s “wasting a perfectly good day off.” Try to give yourself permission to feel crappy. I hope tomorrow is a better day. 💙 5y

Having a bad day. A VERY bad day. And feeling all the feelings you feel when you've isolated yourself so much that you don't get included in or invited to things any more. And that depression part of your brain tells you it's cause you're fucked and why would anyone want to spend time with you. And every nasty thing every one has ever said to you swims in your head and pushes you underneath the water because you know they must have been right.

GypsyKat You are SO not alone! These feelings are very common, even though they can make you feel otherwise. Please know that you are cared for. Know that you are loved. Depression is a bitch (I know from experience) but it doesn‘t define who you are as a person. Let yourself feel whatever you need to feel. Go through it, because there is light on the other side. ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
