Ex Libris: Stories of Librarians, Libraries, and Lore
Ex Libris: Stories of Librarians, Libraries, and Lore | Paula Guran
22 posts | 1 read | 9 to read
Portals to all the knowledge in the world, libraries are also created universes of a multitude of imaginations. Librarians guide us to enlightenment as well as serving as the captains, mages, and gatekeepers who open the doors to delight, speculation, wonder, and terror. Both inspire writers of speculative fiction to pen wonderful tales woven around them. This captivating compilation of science fiction and fantasy short fiction showcases stories of librarians-mysterious curators, heroic bibliognosts, arcane archivists, catalogers of very special collections-and libraries-repositories of arcane wisdom, storehouses of signals from other galaxies, bastions of culture, the last outposts of civilization in a post-apocalyptic world . . . grand adventures and small sagas of the magical places we call libraries and the wizards who staff them!

What a fun thing.....here are mine

Trashcanman Do the squirrels get on you? There's a chap who feeds them at the park and they climb up him. 6y
Lel2403 @Trashcanman no, they just peer in the window until I put food out ....driving the cat mad 😂 6y

Reggie 9. My brother and I always crush the front of our shoes before we put them on because we saw a documentary where people kept getting bit by black widow spiders when they put shoes on. Lol great post!! 6y
Lel2403 @Reggie ha....I always pinch the bottom off a banana as I remember being told as a kid they had spider eggs in them.....still do it now 😂 6y
Lauram I don‘t buy grapes without checking the bag for spiders. A friend of mine once bought a bag of grapes and found a black widow 🕷 6y

I was just reading @EadieB 's reviews and noticed from her short bio that she has a 7,000 volume personal library. 😲😍 Wow! I only have a few shelves of books, myself. Does anyone else have a large library at home?

EadieB @MaGoose I have been getting rid of a lot of my books by swapping them giving them away. Just got a call from my daughter and granddaughter who has their house for sale in Charlottesville VA that she wants to move home. I really need to move out some books now! 6y
MaGoose 🙂 l hope that works out well for you - both with culling your library and with your daughter and granddaughter. 6y
BookNAround Um. Yeah, I‘ve got ::mumble, mumble:: books. Alright, LibraryThing tells me I‘ve got 13,000 plus. I might have a bit of a problem!!! 6y
See All 7 Comments
MaGoose @BookNAround 13,000+ actual books? Or does that include ebooks, too? My shelves of physical books are shown in the photo, but I have 5200+ books in my B&N Nook account, which includes full books that I've purchased and samples of books that I'm interested in. Most of them are unread at this point...What can I say, my mom and her family have lived until close to 100. So, maybe I'll live long enough to read them all... 6y
BookNAround @MaGoose It‘s actual physical books. I haven‘t catalogued more than a handful of ebooks because I read physical books any time I can. 6y
MaGoose @BookNAround Wow! Have you read all of them? 😮☺ 6y
BookNAround @MaGoose Nope. Far too many are still tbr. 🤣🤪 6y

Perfect.

(From the Library Matters Facebook page.)

Trashcanman I hold myself in low self esteem already. So I'd park there and not think twice. 😜 6y
Libby1 @Trashcanman - NO! Well, at least you‘d get to the library more quickly, and that‘s never a bad thing. 😉 6y

Just saw this on my library‘s Facebook page!! Even though there are plenty of exceptions (ebooks, books on hold, etc.), it‘s still a wonderful service! #libraries #midpointelibrarysystem

Samplergal That is great. I wish my library did that. I think. 6y
Lissa00 Wow! 20 times? That‘s fantastic. My library does this but only 3 times. 6y
SharonGoforth @Samplergal @Lissa00 This is something new they are doing. Previously, you could renew up to 3 times, but it wasn‘t automatic. I will be utilizing the library a lot more now!! 6y

Laura317 Twenty seems rather excessive to me. No wonder wait times are so long. 6y
SharonGoforth @Laura317 I doubt I would let it renew that many times, but it‘s nice to know that I don‘t have to be in a rush to get it back. Also, they have several restrictions, so most likely new books wouldn‘t be eligible for this. But for someone like me who often checks out books that are not in high demand, it‘s a nice service. 6y

A day late, but the impressive Seattle Public Library.

PacNWFem Welcome to the area! If you've time, you can take a ferry to Bainbridge Island. Bainbridge is where I live. It is the island upon which David Guterson, a local, based the fictional San Pedro Island for 'Snow Falling on Cedars'. The Japanese-American experience is a large part of the island's history. The ferry ride is only 30 minutes. Hope you make it over. 6y
arubabookwoman @PacNWFem I really like Bainbridge. When we moved to the Seattle area in 1986 we spent many weekends house hunting there, but ultimately ended up in King County suburbs (Sammamish). I get to Bainbridge once in a while to Church Mouse yarns with a knitter friend. Maybe we could have a coffee in downtown Seattle. (Currently we‘re on the east coast visiting our kids.) 6y
PacNWFem That's wonderful! I love where I live. I'm a small-town girl, so living around downtown Bainbridge where I can walk everywhere suits me. Then, if I want a bit of cosmopolitan life, I just walk onto the ferry. 😃 Enjoy your visit! Children are hard work, but they are always a little bit of heaven held in our hearts. 6y
Suet624 That is quite an interesting building! 6y

My local library system changed their network so everyone has to get a new library card. I stopped by on my way to my college‘s library to research. Only a book nerd stops by a public library on their way to a college library. 🤓📚

Hey Littens! A game about books. As soon as I have a spare $60 I‘m buying this. That may mean I have to not buy because books though...

8leagueboot My boyfriend manages a puzzle and game shop; I will have to grill him about why we haven't played this yet 😂 7y
LadyChristy I got this for Christmas! The rule book is 20+ pages though, so once we get around to learning it, I‘ll let you know how it is! 🙈 7y
Lcsmcat There‘s another one we have called Penguin Book Chase. It‘s like Trivial Pursuit about Penguin books. 7y
See All 6 Comments
jpmcwisemorgan @LadyChristy It makes sense that there would be a 20 page long rulebook for a game about books. @8leagueboot He‘s holding out on you, clearly! 😉 @Lcsmcat Ohhhh...... 7y
LectricSheep I‘ve heard of this one— it looks awesome! For a lighter game, check out Paperback! It‘s like scrabble but actually rewards you for making long words. 😅 7y
ghosthost I‘ve played it a few times. Adding locations is a bit unwieldy, but it isn‘t one of those games where advanced gamers can win every single time by memorizing strategies or doing a bunch of mental math. 7y
