Where the Crawdads Sing
Where the Crawdads Sing | Delia Owens
Fans of Barbara Kingsolver will love this stunning debut novel from a New York Times bestselling nature writer, about an unforgettable young woman determined to make her way in the wilds of North Carolina, and the two men that will break her isolation open. For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. She's barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark. But Kya is not what they say. Abandoned at age ten, she has survived on her own in the marsh that she calls home. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life lessons from the land, learning from the false signals of fireflies the real way of this world. But while she could have lived in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world--until the unthinkable happens. In Where the Crawdads Sing, Owens juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a heartbreaking coming of age story and a surprising murder investigation. Thought-provoking, wise, and deeply moving, Owens's debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Glad that I bought into the hype and checked this one out.
Kya's story is beautifully and heartbreakingly told. I expected a little more "courtroom drama" based on other reviews and there was a little *twist* at the end that I'm not sure really fits. But overall a solid pick.

Gutted me, absolutely loved this read. This one had me re-assessing my pre-conceived notions of others. Especially down and out looking others, and I think that‘s a good thing.

I waited over 6 months in a library hold line with 500+ people in it to FINALLY read this book. It was worth the wait. Love. Love. Love. Kya‘s story is devastating, redemptive, hopeful, and memorable. The nature writing is superb and at times made me swoon in linguistic delight. My heart aches to see Kya‘s collections and artistry in real life, but the vivid images Owens creates with her writing are a worthy substitute. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Book 6 of 2020 #WhereTheCrawdadsSing by Delia Owens - This book is gorgeously written, lush, and poetic. I love the story. There‘s something I don‘t quite trust about the characters - can‘t put my finger on it, but it‘s still very much worth reading! 4 ⭐️

One of my girlfriends from my Marine Corps days texted me several months and said “You have got to read this book!” I am so glad she did! I got it in Jólabókaflóð swap but just got to it this week. Part survival tale, part coming of age, part murder mystery. . . this book follows two timelines that converge in the telling of a richly woven story. The biologist in me particularly enjoyed the ethology and botany references. Loved this one!? ? ?

I really enjoyed the description of the marsh. Nature is perfectly depicted through the eyes of this girl, left alone to grow up by herself.
The crime, described at the beginning, kept me interested, but also watching that girl grow up.
I however regretted the manichean way of presenting the characters. The victim and his family are presented in such a way that no empathy is possible. It would have been great if that part was more nuanced...

Kept putting this book off because of all the hype. I just didn't think it would live up to the overwhelming promotion it gained, and well, I just hate reading about courtroom cases. But this book... this beautiful story has become my one of my favorite reads of all time. I want to read it again immediately. I know there is more to find... things I have missed in the pages of this book. So well done Delia Owens!

I finished this the other day. I had started it in August but stopped around page 40 and put it aside. I don‘t remember why. It didn‘t take long to get back into the book and once I did I really enjoyed it. I loved the descriptions of the marsh and it‘s inhabitants. I loved all the science. I liked Kya, Jumpin‘, Mabel and Tate and their story together. A part of the ending related to poetry was a little weird. I expected the rest of the ending.

I had a hard time getting into this but then it did pull me in. This is a story that unfolds slowly, and there are many descriptions of nature due to the author being a wildlife scientist. It‘s an interesting look at how our lives are shaped, how prejudices blind us, loneliness, and how beauty can be found in unexpected places. It‘s a book that has beautiful writing, but it‘s subtle and not in your face. A good one. #bookclubbook

For some reason, this took me awhile to get into, but once I did I pretty much read it in one setting. Delia Owens's description of a coastal marsh's ecosystem is lovely and her story of an isolated girl/woman gives it absorbing human interest.

And the ending kept me at the edge of my seat.

(Pardon the rather fuzzy Kindle screenshot, I tried to jazz it up with an overlay.)

Well written and beautiful observations of nature. I‘ll read Owens again and found this book to be a quick, engaging read. I didn‘t love it like I thought I would. I thought it was so close to being phenomenal but Owens/editor didn‘t use the restraint needed in the last third of the book. Overall, entertaining.

This represents my planned reading for January. I‘ve already started the tagged book. I‘m reading 10 Days in a Madhouse and Greenglass House on Ebook for #NewYearWhoDis. A 3rd book, A General Theory of Oblivion should be here on Friday. The earphones represent Gideon the Ninth on audiobook. Cursed is a book I‘d like to get to this month but won‘t push myself if it doesn‘t work out. The purple notebook is my 2020 reading tracker.

tracey38 I used The Bookworm Life planner last year and plan to use it again this year. It was fun. 🙂💜 1mo
LiteraryinLititz @tracey38 @VioletBramble That looks like a well designed planner! So I have a bullet journal that I was going to start using again for reading tracking in 2020, but I wonder if this would be easier. What do you like about it? 1mo
tracey38 @LiteraryinLititz I like that it's specifically designed for readers but gives you the flexibility to make it your own. It also has some extra fun features like pages for your favorite quotes, books to movies, graph pages to do whatever you want with. Has monthly and weekly views to keep track of when you start/finish books, and lots more. 1mo
tracey38 @LiteraryinLititz If you go to Etsy, and to PeanutButterTaco's store, look up her The Bookworm Life Reading Planner, it'll show you some pages inside. 1mo
VioletBramble @LiteraryinLititz yes, check out Etsy if you‘re interested. She has good photos posted. Last year I used the weekly planner. It was bigger than I needed as I rarely read more than 7 books a month, so this year I got the Monthly. I tried BuJo for a few years but I‘m not artistic. This is already set up, the graphics are bright and I buy stickers from her shop to denote book format - ebook, audio, book- to help organize my books. 4w

LaraS So I‘m at the part where Kya‘s first book has been published. She‘s given a copy to Jumpin‘, who proudly displayed it “as a father would have”.

There‘s several hundred pages to go..but I want it to stop here. This is a happy place. The only reason a book would go on is if bad things are going to happen. So I‘m going to take a short break from this book and let Kya have her moment.

I have traveled to many places in my books through the years. I wasn‘t looking forward to going to a swamp but went as I received this book as a gift. Delia Owens expertly describes the prejudices we have towards others and just as expertly unwraps those for us to examine. Read this and you‘ll want to hug someone who is different. It‘s a beautiful book.
