Dear Mrs. Bird
Dear Mrs. Bird | A J Pearce
"A marvelous treat. Charming and delightful." --Nina Stibbe, author of Love, Nina An irresistible debut set in London during World War II about an adventurous young woman who becomes a secret advice columnist-- a warm, funny, and enormously moving story for fans of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Lilac Girls. London, 1940. Emmeline Lake is Doing Her Bit for the war effort, volunteering as a telephone operator with the Auxiliary Fire Services. When Emmy sees an advertisement for a job at the London Evening Chronicle, her dreams of becoming a Lady War Correspondent suddenly seem achievable. But the job turns out to be working as a typist for the fierce and renowned advice columnist, Henrietta Bird. Emmy is disappointed, but gamely bucks up and buckles down. Mrs. Bird is very clear: letters containing any Unpleasantness must go straight in the bin. But when Emmy reads poignant notes from women who may have Gone Too Far with the wrong men, or who can't bear to let their children be evacuated, she is unable to resist responding. As the German planes make their nightly raids, and London picks up the smoldering pieces each morning, Emmy secretly begins to write back to the readers who have poured out their troubles. Prepare to fall head over heels for Emmy and her best friend, Bunty, who are gutsy and spirited, even in the face of a terrible blow. The irrepressible Emmy keeps writing letters in this hilarious and enormously moving tale of friendship, the kindness of strangers, and ordinary people in extraordinary times.

On my TBR for a while, I chose it as one of the options for my book club to kick off 2020-our voting resulted in the first ever 3-way tie, so I want to make sure that I have read all 3 books before our next meeting- though this one isn‘t the one that ultimately won. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this WWII novel set in 1940 London. The characters come to life & I found myself listening at every opportunity-not just while #AudioColoring!

I picked up the tagged book the other day at a free little library. And for some reason instead of immediately shelving it, I left it out. Well it‘s been staring down my wife so she started reading it today and is half way through. Y‘all she‘s not a big reader. This feels like my happy dance!

You‘re going to stop believing me about disliking WWII novels. This was very cute, with an enormously likable main character. A fairly light read but not dumb or melodramatic. I enjoyed it and barely put it down once I started.

#SoaringScores Day 4: Fats‘ review: “Henrietta Bird is an advice columnist for a women‘s magazine. Working for Mrs. Bird will take more than just typing 125 words per minute, especially with Mrs. Bird‘s long list of Unacceptable Letters in front of her.” And in my unpopular opinion, #DarcysLetter belongs to that pile of undesirables. Fats‘ review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-iIM

What a delight this was to read! 🥰
This story takes us through Emmeline Lake's job working for Henrietta Bird (Agony Aunt) and ending up doing a better job than her! It also tells us of her new found relationship with Charles and her best friend Buntys fiancé, William, dying in an air raid which temporarily breaks their friendship apart; (I can't help but blame Vera for his death..)
It made me well up in places, but made me smile in others!

I‘m fascinated by interviews of those who lived in a war-torn community. They find normal, make mistakes, pursue careers and love, negotiate friendships. They are at times selfish and at times thrive on simple acts of kindness. They grieve, they laugh, they go on. They read.

This book did just that. I thought the author maintained the mores of 1941 London and I appreciate the research required to stay out of the writer‘s current-day head.

I didn‘t really like this book. I thought the idea of it was great and it started off good. I got to a certain point and just thought it was stupid. The drama between Emmy, Bill and Bunty was dumb. I don‘t know if it‘s because of the time it was set it or what, but I just didn‘t care for it. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

CarolynM I had a similar reaction. Great premise, disappointing execution. 4mo

I really loved this book. Set in 1940-1941 in London during the Blitz, it tells the story of Emmy Lake. She works part-time as basically a secretary to the formidable Mrs. Bird at Woman‘s Friend magazine. It‘s her job to sort through the letters to the advice column. Mrs. Bird refuses to answer anything she deems “unacceptable”, so Emmy takes it upon herself to answer some in secret. Equal parts funny, sad & engaging, I‘d highly recommend it. 5⭐️

Cor blimey! What a jolly good book that was.
Dear Mrs Bird is a book all about the power of words and small acts of kindness to strangers. AJ Pearce does a wonderful job of setting the scene and immersing you in 1940's Britain. The characters are well written and very loveable. This is a dear little book that makes you want to get your pen and stationary out to write copious amounts of letters.

I can‘t remember the last time I was awake until 1am finishing a book, but that is exactly what I did with this one. I ❤️‘d this book. Emmy reminded me so much of Anne Shirley and Anne of Green Gables. There were multiple times where I was laughing out loud, as well as many parts that made me cry. Also- I found it fascinating to read about the lives of Londoners during the Blitz—-I definitely want to find more books that focus on that.

“A young woman in 1940s London who longs to be a war correspondent inadvertently becomes a secret advice columnist.”
The protagonist has a lot of spunk (as do many of her friends). While this story had it‘s fair share of tragedy, it was not outweighed by whimsy. That‘s what made it so fantastic! Very much worth a read.

This was between a pick and so-so for me as its chipper tone was difficult for me to adjust to after recently reading The Book Thief and Love and Ruin. However as I decided to just go with the flow it did grow on me and I did appreciate its portrayal of women‘s day to day hardships in WWII England.

kspenmoll I found it a tonic after I finished 6mo

Emmy wants to be a war correspondent and ends up as a junior typist at a failing women‘s magazine. The book is set in London during The Blitz. War time Britain 🇬🇧 is brought to life - the stiff upper lip - the carry on spirit. A quick read full of likeable characters, reminds me of a certain “ Potato Pie” novel. 👍👍

I did enjoy some of the stylistic choices the author made: a lot of 1940s slang made its way in, & she did a lot of capitalizing of Very Important Things to show emphasis. But I overall don‘t think it was written that well? I told one friend that I enjoyed it but was confused for a lot of the book. Things that I think were supposed to be surprising were predictable, & something that was made into a Very Big Deal seemed pretty inconsequential to me

London during WWII was a fascinating time for young women. This story follows an ambitious woman who finds herself typing up letters for an advice column. It's full of British charm, though it doesn't shy away from the horrors of war. I felt like it could have been edited a bit shorter, but really enjoyed it regardless.

🌟🌟🌟
The title is misleading b/c this book is really not about Mrs Bird, who was very one-dimensional and nasty. I wish that‘d been different. Emmy lacks the humor of Bridget Jones, and I was mostly frustrated at her. I felt very removed from the historical events around it and didn‘t care much for the story. I‘ll probably not keep this book, I was expecting much more.
