So happy there is a book like this out there now. I feel like a lot of people of color have felt this way at some point. I wish they had a book like this when I was in middle and high school since I always felt like I didn't fit in with my peers. It's crazy how as an adult I am just now starting to feel comfortable being who I am no matter what people think about me 👑

WomanistBibliophile Yes, I feel the same way 🌸 4d
thebookbutterfly1 @WomanistBibliophile yes this is such a relatable emotion. I wish that there were more open conversations regarding this subject and feeling this way within our community. 4d

Current library check-outs 📚
Black Enough, I hadn‘t realised, is a short story collection—I had thought it was a non-fiction anthology. Short stories are my least favourite form, there‘s only one collection that I‘ve really loved, Adichie‘s. I do generally read one short story book a year, in the hopes of being pleasantly surprised. So I‘ve inadvertently found my one for 2020! Do you enjoy short stories? Have any favourites you‘d recommend?

I‘ve never read YA short stories before but this was very enjoyable! As promised, this gave an enormous variety of visions of young black people‘s lives in America. Some were political, some not, some focused on family or romance. I loved how many of them were tiny bildungsromans that took me on a journey with the characters as they learned difficult, important things. I really recommend!

I love short stories and how the good ones leave you feeling satisfied at the wholeness even in a few pages.

Every single one of these stories was fantastic. As the subtitles says, “Stories of being young & black in America.”

I‘ve read many of these authors before, but I‘m placing holds for books from the authors I didn‘t know. Since 12/17 of the authors identify as Black & female, I‘m still considering this #readingwomenofcolor2019

I just finished listening to this on audio even though I‘ve had it on my dresser for months 🤗 My favorites were the stories by @leahs_mark @lamargiles and @coebooth There were many more good ones too!

One thing that bugged me about the audio was that the gender of the speaker didn‘t always match the gender of the main character and that was hard to turn around sometimes. Short stories on audio are good for driving though, that‘s for sure!

As a grown white lady, I‘m probably not the target audience for this one. I still thought it was wonderful. The stories are about kids grappling with various aspects of their identity- usually along the lines of “What does it mean to be black and...?” There have always been a few black and multiracial students in the predominantly white schools where I teach. This offered some insight on their experiences.

Short stories about race and identity. Very varied. I definitely wanted some of them to be full books.

Amazing set of YA short stories! At the Tucson Book Festival a number of writers mentioned they were currently reading this book, so I had to pick it up. I thoroughly enjoyed each story, and would definitely recommend! Also loved the cover art. Since life has been so busy lately, short stories have really been the perfect thing.

I am not really a short story fan in general. I did like a lot of the stories in this book. They are timely, varied, and make you think. Some though didn‘t catch me as much as others and some I wasn‘t overly fond of the endings.

I loved loved loved this anthology. I'm usually not a fan of short stories because I usually I'm bored out of my mind because I can't get into them or I just need more from them. These were fun to read and quick. A great add to my read in black history month.

This happened tonight at Politics and Prose!!!! Ibi Ziboi, Jason Reynolds, Renee Watson, Lena Henderson in conversation moderated by Elizabeth Acevado. It was a full house. It was packed. It was incredible!

RebL What an excellent, outstanding panel! I may get to meet some of those authors in March. I‘m excited, but I‘m also a slow reader. Plus, I say dumb things to authors, so there‘s that. 12mo
