Snowspelled
Snowspelled: The Harwood Spellbook | Stephanie Burgis
20 posts | 14 read | 39 to read
In nineteenth-century Angland, magic is reserved for gentlemen while ladies attend to the more practical business of politics. But Cassandra Harwood has never followed the rules... Four months ago, Cassandra Harwood was the first woman magician in Angland, and she was betrothed to the brilliant, intense love of her life. Now Cassandra is trapped in a snowbound house party deep in the elven dales, surrounded by bickering gentleman magicians, manipulative lady politicians, her own interfering family members, and, worst of all, her infuriatingly stubborn ex-fiance, who refuses to understand that she's given him up for his own good. But the greatest danger of all lies outside the manor in the falling snow, where a powerful and malevolent elf-lord lurks...and Cassandra lost all of her own magic four months ago. To save herself, Cassandra will have to discover exactly what inner powers she still possesses - and risk everything to win a new kind of happiness. A witty and sparkling romantic fantasy novella that opens a brand-new series for adults from the author of Kat, Incorrigible, Masks and Shadows and Congress of Secrets. "With its unique twist on the Regency Era, SNOWSPELLED is clever, romantic, and filled with magic. Stephanie Burgis is a fresh new voice and I can't wait to see what she does next. Bring on the sequel!" - Ilona Andrews, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of the Kate Daniels series and the Hidden Legacy series

#PromptMaze book with a “cold“ world in the title. A fun Regency style romance set in a world where trolls collect tolls, elves and humans have an uneasy alliance, and women rule but are discouraged from using magic. (I found the gender rules/roles rather confusing.) Add in a nice pining hero and a wonderful family for the main character and you have a charming story.

Day 1 of #20in4 and I've got barely 2:15 hrs read, but also finished 2 books and am almost a third into this (so far very enjoyable!) one. I didn't have much left in either book I finished, still satisfying.

I'd love to hit 20 hours but I've also got an assignment to work on this weekend for a course I'm taking, so I doubt I will. Hopefully I'll finish 2 more books though, trying to clean up some of my on the go ones before the end of the month.

I‘ve just started this one based on a LibraryThing book bullet; I‘m one chapter in. It‘s set in a parallel world where magic exists in something like Regency times. The protagonist is journeying to a country house in a horse carriage in winter. It‘s mainly scene setting so far but there‘s a circumstance the narrator assumes we know but the author hasn‘t told us yet. Frustrating 🙂

humouress Well the first six chapters certainly turn the accepted normal conventions of Regency society on their heads. Still waiting to discover what that life-defining event actually was though there have been more hints. (edited) 5y

Hi Litsy family, I started experiencing some symptoms so went to the testing center. It took over two hours to get through the line. Thankfully I had my Kindle. I finished the tagged book and started a second. Turns out I also had a fever (never felt feverish!) so between that and the shortness of breath, I got swabbed and will know the results within 72 hrs. Stay safe out there.

Hestapleton Here‘s to hoping it‘s negative and just a nasty cold! 🤞🏻 5y

This was over quicker than I expected. Ach y fi, despite how short the book is, it quickly set me to wanting a certain outcome -- which I mostly got, but not quite.

A quick read; looking forward to the second volume. #WyrdandWonder #TBRBingo

Day 29: Most Anticipated Release of 2019
The cover was just revealed today in a happy coincidence! Isn‘t it beautiful? I tagged the first book in the series because this one isn‘t on Litsy yet. If you‘re intrigued by Regency England plus magic and Faeries, give this series a go.

This review is for “Spellswept,” Book 0.5 of “The Harwood Chronicles,” prequel to “Snowspelled.”

I‘ve been home sick all day & between my swimmy head & my inability to breathe properly, I‘ve felt a little like I‘m drowning. So, it was fitting that I read about an underwater ball.

Burgis‘ story was like a little, magical bubble of fresh air! The taboo romance, gender swaps, & fantasy element all had me swooning in a very gentlemanly fashion. 😉

Jas16 Hope you feel better soon 6y
MeganAnn Oh no! Hope you are feeling better today. 6y

I almost NEVER read ebooks... but when Stephanie Burgis puts out an eARC, I make an exception. 💖

Just snagged a copy of this baby. Her “Kat, Incorrigible” middle-grade series (aka “A Most Improper Magick”) is definitely included on my list of favorite witchy books; it‘s earned her my devoted readership for all-time.

I really enjoyed this alternate Regency Britain where men wield all the magic and ladies run the country! The heroine is a magic-user who refuses to follow gendered rules. I especially liked the rough and ready hero, who never gave up on the heroine, even when she gave up on herself. #paranormalromance. #historicalromance

ScientistSam I really enjoyed this one too! (And welcome back!) 7y

I'm always attracted to Regency fantasy, but very rarely does it live up to my hopes. This is one of those rare exceptions - a wholly enjoyable novella that creates an interesting world and a twist on a feminist struggle. The magic isn't well defined, but the politics are. Interestingly, politics are the realm of women, magic the realm of the gentlemen (and considered inferior to politics for a woman). Yet our heroine is a magician.

Chachic Wow, you finished right away! I've heard nothing but good things about this one. And the author is such a lovely person on Twitter. 7y
ScientistSam @Chachic it's only 160 pages, and it's the first day I've had in awhile to just spend the morning in bed reading, so...😜 7y
ghosthost Same. I want to love it and I rarely do. I think part of the trouble I have with historical fantasy is it often leads to lazy worldbuilding. Magic gets slapped on an already existing world without a thought of how things would have developed differently in a world in which magic exists. (edited) 7y
ScientistSam @ghosthost that's a really interesting point. I think I just haven't connected with the writing style of many of these writers, for whatever reason. 7y

#bookandlunch! I got sent a review copy of this romantic fantasy with such a lovely book cover, I haven't had a chance to read it yet but the premise looks interesting. Lunch was this savory crepe that had seafood and cream filling.
