It took me two attempts to complete this book. The first time I didn‘t make it much past the first chapter. This time I finished it. I think your feelings on this book really depends on your love of Mindy Kaling. While I love her as an actress, I did not feel that her voice as a writer translates well into print, and I found in difficult to read. That said, if you can see past that; she does make some poignant remarks about being a woman in media.

Mindy is so relatable, hilarious and adorable. This memoir felt like an inside into Mindy‘s thoughts.

Weekend plans: finish listening to Why Not Me while doing laundry and chores (about 60% in now), finish The Westing Game (about 25% in now), and start my IRL book club book, Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels. Hoping the last one is good since I picked it and I have not enjoyed the last few book club books 😬

Kind of fell off the #AwesomeAugust train on account of I started watching the Mindy Project after I read this book 😂 My main gripe with this book is that it‘s missing segments in the audio version that are in the Kindle book. I usually check out the Kindle version while listening to audio for quotes and noticed. I figure the reason for this is because the book has pictures that you can‘t see while you listen, but still. #BookSpinBingo

I just love her. I loved the Mindy Project and she talks about that a good amount in this book, and about being Soup Snakes with BJ Novak, and steamy scenes, and being a sometimes unwilling body positivity icon, the final chapter essay about confidence and entitlement really knocks it out of the park. ❤️

I‘m not sure if I ever posted on here or if it was just on my Instagram but my boyfriend and I are currently doing the #75hardchallenge. And one of the things you must complete each day with this challenge is to read 10 pages of a non fiction book a day (for 75 days). I just finished my first book, hanger management. Here is a photo of my other non fiction books I will attempt to incorporate in our challenge.

Really enjoyed this one, especially the second half. The last essay was poignant and I loved the ending. I‘m a huge fan of memoirs and Mindy delivers on the behind the scenes info about her life and work. Love what she says about hard work as well. 5⭐️

Though not a character, she is an author. I think of Mindy Kaling as one of the most independent and fulfilled people. She has realized her ambitions and seems to maintain them independent of anyone else‘s expectations.

Like her other memoir, I wasn't blown away by Mindy Kaling here. It was okay, however I felt like there were some problematic phrases, particularly regarding fat people. There were times that she came across as fat phobic, even when she claims she is body positive.

This wasn‘t on my original #BookSpin list so I slotted it as a “Free Space” and it was a very enjoyable read — I laughed quite a bit and want to delve into more of Mindy Kaling‘s work. I did the audio version so it was Mindy reading it which probably added to the appeal. #BookSpinBingo

I have really been getting a good laugh out of this book — I had to make an image for this quote in particular.

I listened to the audiobook, read by the author. Nothing in the book is laugh out loud funny, although there are a few amusing anecdotes. Beyond that, there is the boring... Like a long chapter reading an imaginary email conversation complete with her ridiculous email signature. And the infuriating... She goes on and on about feeling self-conscious about her weight, but then refers to overweight women as "porkers." Don't waste your time.

I loved her first book so much I went to the library and immediately got her second. My reactions are basically the same. This is funny AND moving and this time she even mentioned how good books make you want to be best friends with the author..... i was like DUH Mindy that is how i feel right now. Also- love all her stories about the office and her friendship with BJ

I read the book as I listened to the audio version. I loved the audio because Mindy Kaling narrates it herself. Good read, definitely interesting! Kaling was made for comedy!

This was my first audio book & it was fantastic! What a treat that it was read by Mindy herself. I already have told my daughter she‘s got to read or listen to it!

I had read this a few years ago but barely remembered it. The audio was great since it‘s read by Mindy Kaling. I especially like the last part when she talks about confidence.

Tagging this book for #somethingaboutrace for #nonfiction2020 as Mindy does talk about being Indian in Hollywood in a few of the essays.

I am unsure if I actually like this form of celebrity memoir as sometimes it seems really pieced together.
However, I did like this one more than some others that I have read as it had a slightly better thread running through it.

I picked these up from the department book exchange today! I‘m looking forward to finally reading about these ladies! 😻

I gave it 2 stars on goodreads but would probably give it 2.5 stars actually. This book is semi-relatable, semi-funny, kind of a rambling monologue from a semi-famous person. The book was all over the place, there was rarely a start middle and end to the stories and mostly it‘s just random thoughts.

"The scary thing I have noticed is that some people feel really uncomfortable around women who don't hate themselves. So that's why you need to be a little bit brave."

Alas, I reconsider extending an invitation to Mr. Cooper for one of my dinner parties.

Writer/actress Mindy Kaling gives perspective on fame, friendship, dating, and her career in this funny and personal collection of essays. Celebrity expectations and the stresses of comedic writing, layered with her own anxieties and insecurities, show what a trajectory she has made during her years in Hollywood to evolve to the self-aware woman she is today. She's more than likeable, also relatable and able to inspire the reader to work hard .

Yes, the last “lesson“ is great, but how about the first one? Too often we're told to simply appreciate when things are good and be content. To want to change things up or desire something more fulfilling for ourselves? That's selfish and risky! We already have something “good“, right? I agree with her. It's cool to want more for yourself, and even cooler to strive for your dreams and be who you want, no matter how “good“ others think you have it.

I listened to this on audio and I‘m so glad I did! I am a huge fan of The Office and I knew Mindy Kailing was a writer for that show, so I knew this book had to be funny. And I was right. It‘s funny, engaging and most of all, real. Her narration made all the difference for me. And, I loved hearing the stories about The Office and B.J. Novak! This was the perfect palate cleanser for me while I‘m trying to finish Columbine...

A fun, quick audiobook. I listened to the whole thing in one evening! Nothing earth-shattering, but it was cool to hear a bit more about Kaling‘s life, and she‘s a great narrator. The only thing annoying about the audiobook is a section where she‘s imagining her life as a Latin teacher if she hadn‘t made it in Hollywood, and it‘s told thru work emails and texts, so her listing the subject line, time/date stamp, & signatures of each email got old.

Kaling‘s second set of lighthearted essays explores work, relationships, love and (minor) fame in her hilarious voice.

*Probably no one will remember Mindy Kaling‘s short-lived comedy called “Champions,” but this is what I thought of when I saw today‘s tune. Kaling created the show, + she had a recurring role. Alas, it only lasted for one season on NBC in America.

Love her!

Fast and entertaining read. While it felt authentic, it also kind of left me waiting for a bit more substance. It was like having a marathon phone call with a friend, but if anyone asked what you actually talked about, you couldn‘t tell them. The book is the same. Enjoyed it, but can‘t tell you a thing about it.

I've never gotten hooked on Kaling's series (The Office and The Mindy Project). I still enjoyed this book. She's funny! This was a fun, quick read.

I may be in the minority here, but I actually liked this one better than Kaling's first book. It's basically a lesson on how one successful woman does it - the sacrifices and tradeoffs, and the rewards and satisfaction of doing what you love as your job. This was the perfect book to relax with over a glass of your favorite beverage!
