Wouk does a great job of capturing overall American experience with the war. Characters were believable, as well.

#two4tuesday Thanks @MoonWitch94 for the tag!

1. Yes before Audible but rarely. I didn‘t want abridged & unabridged books were crazy expensive

2. All the time as a teen. I loved how when I‘d hear the songs, I‘d remember the book. For example I listened to Der Kommisar (80s kid) a lot while reading the tagged book & its sequel. Even now when I hear it I think of the books. I stopped listening to music while reading when I got married. Go figure.

TheSpineView 80s a good decade! Thanks for playing! 💜🎧 3y
MoonWitch94 You‘re welcome & thanks for playing ☺️🎉 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve NEVER listened to a book!! It just sounds so foreign!! I‘m old school though!! 🤣🤣 3y
mavey I used to do it too! But only with new songs though as I'd stop reading and start singing if it's a well-acquainted one😅. I love the warm and cozy feeling I get whenever a song reminds me of the story!!😍🥰 3y

Earlier this year I scratched this classic off of my TBR. Great historical WWII era fiction. I also just now realized the covers line up as I was taking this pic lol

Maryjoe236 I loved these books. They are very long but so interesting to me as they covered actual events of WW2 3y

Gliding across an imaginary line that splits the Pacific Ocean from the north to the south polar caps, the sunrise acquired a new label, June 23. Behind that line, June 22 had just dawned. This murky international convention, amid world chaos, still stood. For the globe still turned ninety million miles away in black space, and the tiny dwellers on the globe still had to agree, as they went about their mutual butcheries, on a way to tell the time.

Jaimelire This was a really great book. 5y
BooksbyBJThompson It truly was. Did you ever read the sequel, War and Remembrance? Also extremely good. 5y

I put a hold on this book at the library without knowing a ton about it other then it was about an American family in ww2. It turned out to be super long and super detailed. The characters were interesting and scattered into a huge variety of stories. This book finished not long after Pearl Harbor and I am amazed at how much detail there was and the War was not even over yet.

Enjoyed this one, although it took a while. I definitely have a much better understanding of World war II and everything that led up to it. I'd recommend it although it kept me going rather than sucking me in which is why it took a while.

At 45 Rhoda Henry remained a singularly attractive woman but she was rather, a crab. This colored her judgement and it was a fault he found hard to forgive her.

Why have I never read this? I vaguely remember the mini series in the 80's, although I didn't watch that either. There was just an interview with him on CBS Sunday Morning, and now I want to read the two books. (2000 pages!). Has anyone read it?

Kris10 I just watched that segment too! 7y
LauraAndTaraAndBooks My grandad bullied me into reading The Caine Mutiny a few years ago and I was very resistant cuz it didn't feel like my "thing" but I absolutely adored it. Must get round to reading this some day! 7y
Reecaspieces I actually read this and the sequel years ago and LOVED IT! I have since listened to it on audible a few times. And I very very seldom reread. But this is very much worth it. 7y

Bklover I read it years ago and loved it! There is also a sequel, The Winds of War. It was also made into a tv miniseries eons ago. 7y

#publishedinthe1970s. Just to be different I am going with the 1970's. This book was the the best seller for most of 1972. The year I came kicking and s reaming into this world.

#couldntputitdown #somethingforsept More from my high school days and these two were amazing. I do need to reread again someday when I have endless time. I listened to the top 40 at the time and one of those was Der Kommissar that I listened to while reading these books. Still love the song but even now when I hear it I think of the Nazis. Appropriate, right?

BarbaraTheBibliophage Oh I loved these! Decades ago ... 😂 8y
ApoptyGina69 We must be of a similar age because I watched the mini-series on PBS in 1983 (?) and that song & video were a steady soundtrack. 8y
Texreader @BarbaraTheBibliophage I know, right? But they were so good. Glad I kept them all these years. How do you give away such good friends? 8y

Texreader @ApoptyGina69 Well to age me my 30th class reunion is this year and to be honest I'd rather reread these old friends from the 80s than go to the reunion. 🕶 I'll bet you are singing Der Kommissar in your head. How about Sunglasses at Night? 😎 8y
Texreader @ApoptyGina69 I keep thinking those were the days of the Berlin Wall and how we celebrated when it came down and the students who stood up to the tanks at Tiananmen Square. I love our decade. 8y

I almost forgot it's #recommendsday! My pick this week is The Winds of War one of THE best WWII books EVER. (It's a two part series - the second is War and Remembrance). It was a series that I finished and my breath had been taken away. I can't wait to re-read it. Also, bonus bc Hitler, Stalin, Roosevelt and other historical figures are characters!! But seriously, such a moving series.

Twocougs Good book. Read that many years ago😉 8y

Fantastic story of an American family during WW2. Very well written the characters are very believable. You will love it.

Texreader I read these books as a teenager and listening to my 80s music. I can still "feel" these books when I hear some songs like Der Kommissar. Time for a Reread. 8y
