Displacement
Displacement: A Travelogue | Lucy Knisley
35 posts | 57 read | 25 to read
In her graphic memoirs, New York Times-best selling cartoonist Lucy Knisley paints a warts-and-all portrait of contemporary, twentysomething womanhood, like writer Lena Dunham (Girls). In the next installment of her graphic travelogue series, Displacement, Knisley volunteers to watch over her ailing grandparents on a cruise. (The books watercolors evoke the ocean that surrounds them.) In a book that is part graphic memoir, part travelogue, and part family history, Knisley not only tries to connect with her grandparents, but to reconcile their younger and older selves. She is aided in her quest by her grandfathers WWII memoir, which is excerpted. Readers will identify with Knisleys frustration, her fears, her compassion, and her attempts to come to terms with mortality, as she copes with the stress of travel complicated by her grandparents frailty.

In this travelogue, Lucy shares the tough experience she had helping her grandparents on a cruise. I thought the book was well done. I love Lucy's comic journaling style. It provides interesting snapshots and insights into her experiences. This book was a tough read because I'm close in age to when she took this trip and it was stressful to imagine how well I'd be able to keep grandparents (one with Alzheimer's) comfortable in this situation!

The second one of hers I have read. I love the drawings, the text and the sentiments expressed. Her 90 + plus grandparents decide to go on a cruise , relatives worried as one has dementia and other is not too good on his feet. Lucy offers to go along and this is her account.

Suet624 This one sounds intriguing! What must it be like to have dementia on a cruise ship?? 4y

I have rapidly become a big Lucy Knisley fan. This book would be relatable to anyone who has interacted with aging relatives. Lucy is in her 20s and accompanies her elderly grandparents, whose health is in decline, on a major trip. Lucy tells her story with love and humor mixed with the fear of mortality. It‘s a complex and beautifully illustrated story that I recommend.

charl08 I like all her books that I've read, but this one really moved me. 5y

My Goodreads goal for the year is 95 books, but once I finish all the books on my December TBR, I would be at 98 for the year. So I decided to try to read 2 extra books to reach 100. Of course, I‘m making it easy on myself & choosing small books. The 1st one I picked as my extra book was Displacement, which I read tonight. It put me at 95 books for the year! Woot! Now let‘s see if I can finish 5 more books with all the holiday stuff going on!

Te Araroa kilometers tramped: 603.3 of 3005.3

Books completed on trail: 12

This is my third book from this author. She‘s an excellent storyteller and artist. Although the subject matter is quite depressing, it‘s a worthwhile read. #hoopla

Can anyone recommend similar graphic novels?

megnews I really like her. Hard to find something comparable. Maybe Roz Chast or Jennifer Hayden. 5y
hike.read.repeat @megnews cool thanks. I favorited a Roz Chast book on Hoopla for later. 🙂 5y

As usual, another hit. This time Lucy's story is about going with her grandparents on a cruise. She takes care of them all the way through and learns a lot about patience, etc. This book is really perfect for anyone who wants to know what it is like to take care of elderly family, not to mention with onset dementia/Alzheimer's.

My second #graphic travel memoir by Lucy Knisley. In this, she accompanies her grandparents, 91 & 93, on a Caribbean cruise. Battling the difficulties of traveling with the elderly and her grandma‘s worsening forgetfulness, she makes the best of the situation and tries to understand them and her family better. I would recommend.

Not sure how I feel about this book... The content is interesting: the writer witnessing the decline of her grandparents. I also liked the parts in which she included the memoirs of her grandfather. However, I'm not a fan of the illustrations... On the same subject, I would rather recommend Can't we talk about something more pleasant?

“Whenever I travel through crowded places, I‘m struck by how human beings en masse are so incredibly hideous, while individual humans can be so heartbreakingly beautiful. Congregated: ugly, ubiquitous, and repellent. Individually:
nuanced, intricate, beautiful, and unknowable. Fragile, separate, singular… Fascinating. This just kills me.”

nomadreader I loved that book. 7y

So this was my 4th Knisley, loved it of course. Both the narrative & the drawing style were more tightly controlled, it seemed, than usual, & I actually felt something was lost in that control. I'm getting really nitpicky only bc I love her work-and I had thought in the past that perhaps her work was a little too loosy-goosy, but this one helped show me what that freedom really gives you. I love looking at the small differences between her books.

I don't know where I'll begin though!

Graphic travelogues are a particular joy of mine, and @lucyknisley is especially skilled at finding the beauty, the joy, and the humour in the smallest of moments. This travelogue does all that her previous work accomplishes, but also adds in the heartbreaking layers of family and aging.

How I feel lately.

This is Knisley's story of her Caribbean cruise with her elderly, declining grandparents. Having just visited my own grandma, it was a gut punch. She handles their mortality with love and kindness. I just hope I can be as brave as she is. #readharder2017 #travelmemoir

I appreciated this book even more today, reading it in one sitting after spending a day with my family. We live two hours apart now, and it's really hard for me to not see my grandparents every day like I used to. I cherish the time we spend together even more now. ❤

AileenRR @jessica I didn't read them in order, but chronologically they go: French Milk (which I haven't read yet), Relish, An Age of License, Displacement, and Something new. I think I did 2, 3, 5, 4. 7y

I had a full day of hygge yesterday. The candle is apple-scented. There was wine and not seen are the comfy pajamas, fuzzy slippers, and bowl of peanut m&ms. This book was so what I needed. Knisley is someone I really enjoy - some books I like, some I love. This is a love. Her story about her aging grandparents, frustrations of taking them on a trip, and reflection of mortality were so timely for me. Excellent.

DebinHawaii Now that I've finally read Relish I want to read more from her. 📚👍 8y
Zelma @DebinHawaii I absolutely loved Relish. Age of License was good but not my favorite. I am eager to read the rest of her books as well. 8y

Two days of moving my elderly blind mother-in-law in with us, getting settled, washing, cleaning, organizing, adjusting, people in and out, clutter, chaos, and cleaning as much cigarette smoke smell out of her stuff.... I am done. Need a break. Sitting in my happy place with coffee and a timely book choice. Ahhhhh. ☕️😌

A quick, lovely read. Lucy Knisley is a wonderful storyteller. This travelogue, which is peppered with excerpts from her grandfather's WWII memoir, is a graceful portrait of Knisley's relationship with her elderly grandparents. A trio out of place on a Caribbean cruise. 5/5⭐️
