Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me | 
pickThis was hard to get through. The protagonist is dating the horrible Laura Dean, to the detriment of all of her other relationships. By the end, I was so ready for Laura to be gone. But the ending, which dealt with how messy even “good” break ups are, redeemed the rest of the book. The art work was lovely, the color palette well done, the side characters all deserved their own books, but Laura Dean didn‘t seem worth the pining.
pickI just spent the morning with Mariko Tamaki‘s latest book. I have to say, if you‘d like the uncomfortable uncertain feeling of high school love with all it‘s ups and downs and spirals, it‘s right here. This really brought me back to my first really bad relationship, where I felt more serious than she did and spent months feeling broken hearted even though I had hopes it could work... spoiler- it totally didn‘t work for us!

pickI'm not a huge fan of graphic novels, and while this one's artwork didn't quite hit the mark for me, I loved its message to know your own self worth and to surround yourself with people who know it too.

pickThis was darn good but my biggest take-away was that Doodle is great, Doodle is the best, I need an entire novel of Doodle, everything Doodle, from Doodles perspective. Do I have a crush? Heck yes I do. Doodle for president.

pickFreddy can‘t seem to help herself from going back to Laura, the most popular girl in high school, even though Laura keeps breaking her heart. This character-based #graphicnovel explores the nuances of contemporary teen friendships and lesbian romance with so much realism that I sometimes flinched with recognition. Moody, flirty art in grayscale & pink is by Rosemary Valero-O‘Connell (of Lumberjanes fame). #LGBTQ
Despite the teacher chaperone‘s awkward interjection, there is actually a realistic amount of sexual activity in this novel. Also, can someone explain to me what “making love ‘80s style” means? I think the deejay is referring to music, not sex?
Scenes in this graphic novel perfectly capture the inner and outer uncertainties that play out in a toxic relationship.
pickMuch like Mariko Tamaki‘s previous works, this is a snapshot of a specific experience that alters a girl‘s self-perception and opens opportunity for growth. There isn‘t a dramatic crescendo for plot, but rather continuous moments of deep introspection.
It‘s a highly emotional reading experience— I described this book to a friend as sad but nice. And soft, oh so soft 😭

so-soNo one is sadder than me to say that this is my least fav Mariko Tamaki, whose books I usually love. I just didn't care about or empathize with the characters. Neither the relationship between Freddy and her GF nor between her and her BFF were developed enough. I didn't get Freddy, I didn't get Laura Dean's appeal. I missed Tamaki's humour. Drawings are absolutely stunning, with very diverse people, but doesn't make up for the stuff missing.
Has anybody read this? I've been eyeing it ever since it came out, but I haven't gotten around to it. The cover is the first thing that caught my eye when I first saw the book, it's very pretty.

pickThis was a really sweet graphic novel about toxic relationships, love, and what it means to be a good friend. The artwork was absolutely beautiful, the characters were well fleshed out, and the story was heartfelt and inspired. There was also a lot of really good #LGBTQ+ representation. I'd highly recommend it!
pickJumped on the hype train for this one. I've never been one to read graphic novels, but hey, they might actually be my thing?? I READ THIS IN ONE SITTING. It's tender but raw, inclusive, stunning, and just very very real. It's centers on a Toxic Relationship and how that affects the protagonist's other relationships, and, especially, her relationship with herself and her self-respect. TRs are not fun and this YA novel gets everything right 🙌

pickAddresses tough issues with some humor. Toxic relationships are the main theme and they really seemed to cover how it happens that you end up in a toxic relationship and continue in that cycle. How people in those relationships change and hurt other parts of their life while in them.
Looooved. Including the coloring of the art.
pickLove the art and the colors... love that this is a story anyone can relate to: either you or your friend has dated a Laura Dean. But the story doesn‘t always flow, and that was distracting. Still recommend.

pickBook 36: While I‘m not the biggest fan of graphic novels, I‘ll never pass up the opportunity to read a book about Queer girls. This one was pretty delightful and that cover is 😍😍
pickThis was good. Tear inducing and just what I needed. As someone who‘s dated a Laura Dean, this story touched close to home. Art was beautiful and the story is well done. So happy I ordered this one.
