Wreck this Journal
Wreck this Journal: To Create is to Destroy | Keri Smith
20 posts | 30 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
A new edition of Keri Smith's bestseller, with updated materialThink of Wreck This Journal as the anarchist's Artist's Way -- the book for those who've always wanted to draw outside the lines but were afraid to do it.For anyone who's ever wished to, but had trouble starting, keeping, or finishing a journal or sketchbook comes Wreck This Journal, an illustrated book featuring a subversive collection of suggestions, asking readers to muster up their best mistake - and mess-making abilities to fill the pages of the book (and destroy them).Through a series of creatively and quirkily illustrated prompts, acclaimed artist Keri Smith encourages journalers to engage in "destructive" acts - poking holes through pages, adding photos and defacing them, painting with coffee, colouring outside the lines, and more - in order to experience the true creative process. With Keri Smith's unique sensibility, readers are introduced to a new way of art and journal making, discovering novel ways to escape the fear of the blank page and fully engage in the creative process.

I‘m usually super anal with my books. This is exactly what I needed.

My answer to the #Browsery question: “I am a beginner poet. What book do I need?”

Trashcanman Can I share this? 6y
Megara @Trashcanman Totally! 6y
Trashcanman @Megara this made my day. As a writer of shitty poetry this made me smile. 6y

Last day: you know I thought about this a lot. Personally I‘ve never wrecked a book (unless you count throwing it from personal torture). I can see and understand why some books would make you want to wreck them (I‘ve read a few stinkers). I would be tempted to wreck a book for art or art projects over wrecking it for bad content. #ATB

This isn‘t what authors usually want done to their books. 😂😱😂

I accidentally went into Savers and accidentally acquired five “new to me” books. 😀 I picked up the journal for my friend‘s daughter who‘s struggling with her parents divorce, changes at school, making friends, and anxiety. I think she already journals but I think this might be a good way for her to express herself more creatively. So it‘s really only four books for me!

Hooked_on_books I accidentally bought books recently, too! 😂 7y
Texreader I need to accidentally visit a bookstore soon. I'm getting withdrawals. 7y

"Float this page" = ARE YOU TRYING TO GIVE ME A PANIC ATTACK?!? This is going to be the hardest book to complete.

beachbookworm7 I had one of these a couple of summers ago. My best friend and I did it together and it was so fun! I remember tying a string to the book at one point and dragging it behind the car. 😂 7y
theshelvedlife Some of the instructions are just insane = a dead bug page?!? 🤢 7y

@Simona Sophie said thank you! She has claimed the pencil case but we're sharing the pens and pencils, the bookmarks are so gorgeous that, although one is hers it's staying in my library ❤️

LeahBergen Oh, @Simona really IS the best isn't she?? I love my bookmarks like this SO MUCH. 😍😍😍 7y
DeborahSmall @LeahBergen there's no way I could use them on the go or for even in my handbag. I'll only use them for when I'm reading in my library. She's so talented. The wrapping was a piece of art. I am going to recycle the beautiful wooden flower thingys that was wrap around the gifts to make something for Sophie ❤️ 7y
DeborahSmall @LeahBergen Sophie has already started writing in her journal. She's writing an alternative to Snow White. She let me read the beginning and it's still the traditional version.... the title of the book from my sweet princess is: 'The Bastard Curse of Snow White' this is why I think my daughter will be a comedian. This was not to be funny. It's totally serious. Like her raps about Donald trump.... 😂 7y

LeahBergen Nooo!!! 😂😂😂 We are going to have to see a page from that story! Love it!! 7y
Simona @DeborahSmall I'm blushing very hard 😊😊😊 and @LeahBergen is responsible for this, that I started to make them 😂 and I want to see also the story from your sweet princess! 7y
DeborahSmall @LeahBergen @Simona I'm looking forward to the rest of the story. She loves music and informed me rather seriously that it was a good journal for writing lyrics 😂 she cracks me up 7y

Super excited to dive into this! Anyone else have this? #journal 🤓

Tanner I do! I keep forgetting about it though. 7y
Texreader Looks like one I need! 7y
JenlovesJT47 @Texreader it's pretty cool! Can't wait to use it. @Tanner awesome, I'm going to try not to let it just sit around like I have a habit of doing with certain books. Here's to better habits! 🍻 7y
OriginalCyn620 I completed mine a while back. Had so much fun! Enjoy! 7y

When your kids have 4 sets of grandparents, you get enough treats and goodies to last 6 months! After a fun day of "Eastering", I am ready for some alone time. Finish reading Three Dark Crowns or research the season premiere of Doctor Who?

EmilyChristine I'd say Doctor Who. I haven't had a chance to watch yet. 8y
sammisho @EmilyChristine It was good! I think Bill is going to be a good companion! 8y

I wish I had more time to do some of the fun things with these books. I've always thought these books were neat.

Chrissyreadit Have you used them in general? I have looked at them at different times for my teenage children. We have Wreck This Journal- I'm very curious about the Explorer book. 8y
Brenley The only one I haven't really done anything with is Mess. The Explorer book is fun. It has fun outdoor activities and art projects. I could definitely see it as a neat workbook for kids. 8y

This sketchbook is so beautiful! I couldn't pass it up. 💸 There's nothing better than the feeling of potential in a blank journal. 😍It reminds me of Tolkien's artwork. Now to figure out what to put in it...

RealLifeReading Gorgeous! 8y
rustoryhuf I have so many sketchbooks and journals ready to be filled. I love the idea of a blank page waiting... 8y

Rooting for the Lit guy in today's SCIENCE SLAM, who introduced his thesis called "Honey, I'll walk the novel - on the intimate relationship between a reader an his book", documenting his (ab)use of Keri Smith's adult activity book. Sender, message and receiver, who influences whom?

Somehow we ended up with a box of Bookmarker Pens. My 10-year-old asked what they were for, so I told him that some people like to underline and write in their books. The look of HORROR on his face was *priceless*! So, Litsy, do you guys write in your books?

Chessa I was a huge highlighter in college and grad school. But for fiction, I really don't tend to write or highlight in books. I would say this is mostly due to the fact that I use the library for 95% of my reading, but really, even the stuff we own is writing-free. Just never got in the habit. 8y
Bibliogeekery I put light pencil marks in the margins and then often erase them later once I've made note of the info or quote elsewhere. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi I'm kinda with your son on this one. Although, I have been known to use post-it arrows in lieu of underlining. 8y

Chelsey I don't but I want to because the best part of buying old books is reading along with previous readers 8y
abbiereadsbooks Never ever ever ever. Just the thought makes me cringe. In high school, a teacher expected us to make notes in our margins, and I insisted on using a notebook instead. To each their own, though! 8y
DreesReads Only cookbooks and craft books! That belong to me, of course. My favorite cookbooks are full of notes. 8y
Soubhiville Nope. 8y
brendanmleonard Yes. Not 1st editions or autographed copies, but - yeah. 8y
Chessa @AudreyMorris Ah, I totally spaced cookbooks, but I do make notes in those (that I own, natch). 8y
LauraBrook Pretty much never - but I bought myself this to try and force myself not to glorify books too much. It's still sitting, pristine, on a shelf. 8y
MaryAnn1 😂Raising a child to respect the book. I love it! Parenting done right!😊 8y
Stephanie-Anne Is there any other way to read a book? 😸 Underline! Highlight! Marginalia! It feels like something might get away if I don't read with some writing instrument in hand... 8y
SusanInTiburon Yes, very often. 8y
AmandaL Never! 8y
TheWellReadOwl Yes! Underline, highlight, bookmark with stickies. 🤓 8y
TheWellReadOwl But I won't ever bend the corners. Too barbaric! 😂😂 Go figure. 8y
Megabooks Noooo!!! 8y
Carol Never!😱 8y
SaraFair In my Bible and cookbooks. Sometimes I REALLY need to know not to make something again. 8y
Gezemice Not in normal books, but when I was in college, I had to underline in my text books in order to be able to follow. 8y
