May We Be Forgiven
May We Be Forgiven: A Novel | A. M. Homes
Winner of the 2013 Women's Prize for FictionA darkly comic novel of twenty-first-century domestic life and the possibility of personal transformation Harold Silver has spent a lifetime watching his younger brother, George, a taller, smarter, and more successful high-flying TV executive, acquire a covetable wife, two kids, and a beautiful home in the suburbs of New York City. But Harry, a historian and Nixon scholar, also knows George has a murderous temper, and when George loses control the result is an act of violence so shocking that both brothers are hurled into entirely new lives in which they both must seek absolution. Harry finds himself suddenly playing parent to his brothers two adolescent children, tumbling down the rabbit hole of Internet sex, dealing with aging parents who move through time like travelers on a fantastic voyage. As Harry builds a twenty-first-century family created by choice rather than biology, we become all the more aware of the ways in which our history, both personal and political, can become our destiny and either compel us to repeat our errors or be the catalyst for change. May We Be Forgiven is an unnerving, funny tale of unexpected intimacies and of how one deeply fractured family might begin to put itself back together.

I loved it in spite of its flaws. Yes, the pacing was all over the place, some pieces sorely underdeveloped or glossed over while others overly detailed but I laughed, reflected, smiled and overalls really enjoyed it. It‘s a dark comedy that reflects on modern families, society, and culture.

JenP @BarbaraBB unfortunately. I‘ve been so busy and every month I say “this will be the month I start back up again” I miss having the time to read the way I used to. I‘m so tired at the end of the day that I fall asleep reading and usually right after I start reading. 2y
BarbaraBB That sounds tough. I hope for some quieter times soon for you! 2y
JenP @BarbaraBB thanks! I‘m going to the Hay festival next week 🥳 2y

10-23-21: My 104th finished book of 2021! What an engaging story. Harold is attending his brother‘s thanksgiving dinner, when his sister in law kisses him. This starts a year long trajectory of many amazingly sad and eventually uplifting events. Harold‘s life changes in innumerable ways. Most importantly, he finds an inner peace he never knew he needed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣0️⃣4️⃣

This starts of as very dark humor, some of the darkest, but then moves into a very sweet commentary on family and unconditional love. While I kept getting distracted about the amount of money the protagonist seemed to always have at his disposal (with no job) I was able to overlook this and a few other unbelievable components (Alzheimers patient's being left alone with only the pet sitter????) and enjoy this book immensely. 4 ⭐ s

It's been so much fun trading music and book connections these past few years. Thanks for organizing such an amazing challenge, Cindy! It was a great way to meet so many people and see everyone's creativity. Not to mention the songs themselves - I had the daily song stuck in my head many times. I'll miss it, but looking forward to sharing in future Litsy events with everyone! 😃🎵🎸🎹🥁🎶👏👏👏

This book is pretty bizarre and a lot of the interactions are far fetched, but I really enjoyed it. I got sucked in from the moment I started it. 1st book finished of the #24in48. I slept in and took breaks for food so I'm not too far in to my readathon

Cinfhen Wow!! I don‘t think I could have picked just 5 🙌🏻 Here‘s to many more good reads in the year ahead 6y
Billypar @Aimeesue I was so thrilled to see a post the other day about Tea Obreht's forthcoming novel in 2019- very exciting! 6y
Billypar @erzascarletbookgasm I can't wait to read more Hustvedt! 6y
Billypar @Nute Of the 5, I read that one first, around February I think. Really stuck with me all year: a perfect memoir. 6y
Billypar @Ddzmini Hope you enjoy as much as I did! 6y
Billypar @BeachesnBooks Yes, and so different too. I never read anything like Link before, but I always like discovering something I haven't seen before. 6y
Billypar @Cinfhen I was going to choose 10 and was having a hard time limiting it, so I decided to go the opposite way, and for some reason that was easier 🤷 6y

Looking for a good black comedy? Start here- not sure I've read a better one than this wonderfully bizarre update of the classic dysfunctional American family drama. No offense to the New Yorker prototypes, but what I love about Homes' version is she can switch gears from twisted cruelty or dry suburban satire and turn on a dime to tender moments with characters who try earnestly to do some good. I fell in love with this book- just sad it's over!

CarolynM Great review. I've always meant to read this but haven't got there yet. 6y

BarbaraBB I‘ve got this on my shelves but haven‘t read it yet because of a negative review so I am happy with yours! 6y
Billypar @BarbaraBB It's definitely an odd enough book that I could see people not liking just for personal taste reasons (true of just about any dark comedy), but for me, the quality of the writing is undeniable. 6y
KateFulfordAuthor If you like good character development, a smart plot and a sassy narrative, may I recommend my debut to you? See the link for reviews and more. 6y

Well, I guess I‘m doing the thing now. 😂 A snow day is the perfect excuse to catalog all your books, right? If you‘re on Library Thing, I‘m now on there as erinhasbooks because apparently there‘s another Erin in this world who reads? HOW RUDE. 😜 So basically find me and friend me and teach me your ways over there! #LibraryThing

britt_brooke 😆 7y
GondorGirl I've been PirateColey on LT for 10+ years. It's my favorite cataloging program. ❤ 7y

LitLogophile BOTM books always look so pretty lined up on a shelf! 💞 7y
readherwriteher I‘m over there @readherwriteher I‘m a little lost 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂 I cant figure out how to friend request you guys, so if you want to be friends, I have exactly one book added and I‘m having a bit of a panic attack. I think I need to sit at a computer to use the site properly because trying to use it on my phone is like trying to read a book but only seeing part of the page. 🤦🏻‍♀️ (edited) 7y
erinreads @readherwriteher I just added you! I just figured out how to myself, so we‘re learning here! 🤗 I‘ve been using the computer to set up and maintain but now I‘m using my phone to scan books. 7y
RaimeyGallant Haha. :) 7y
erinreads @LitLogophile They do! It helps that they‘re all the same height, too... except for a few rogue ones not in this lineup clearly. 😂 7y
readherwriteher @erinreads thanks! I am not usually tech challenged, so I‘m having a moment right now. 😂 (edited) 7y
kgriffith @readherwriteher Social features aren‘t available in the app, so you‘re not missing anything! It‘s really focused on cataloging, so I typically use the app for adding books and checking to see if I have something/if it‘s on my wishlist before purchasing. I also use it for adding high res covers if one doesn‘t already exist. 7y
AceOnRoam Haha, I just joined but I'm not sure where to start. I'll have a look tomorrow after a good night's sleep! 7y
AceOnRoam @readherwriteher it's not very intuitive is it. I started by installing the app, but it's extremely basic, so I moved over to the website. Took me ages to add my pic and one book lol. 7y
readherwriteher @AceOnRoam no, it‘s not. I‘ve been trying to figure out how to add a profile photo for over half an hour. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
readherwriteher @kgriffith Thanks for the info. 🙏🏻😊 I don‘t have my books catalogued anywhere so I‘m looking to having that. (edited) 7y
AceOnRoam @readherwriteher go to the Home page which is the button under the big L. In the section where it says spruce up your profile it's the second hyperlink "Add a member photo" 7y
Bostonmomx2 I have a LT account but haven‘t done really anything with it. I‘ll give it some time and see if Litsy really does give us free accounts for 200+ books and then I MIGHT consider moving my Goodreads stuff over but the thought of entering over 2,000 books makes my brain explode. 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks I hope you love it as much as me! 📚(Tanglewood) One tip, I add in the comments the sender for Litsy exchanges because I have such a TBR stack it is insane. 7y
readherwriteher @AceOnRoam YAY! I‘m on it. Thank you 🙏🏻😊 7y
Rachellynnwright I‘m with you, @Bostonmomx2 The only way i would be willing to move my huge book catalog from GR to LT is if it‘s free! 7y
batsy I was so offended to learn that my username was taken on LT! Until I remembered it was me... 😂 7y
Jinjer They won‘t let me use Jinjer so I had to do Jinjer.Hundley😡 7y
leahbird New here and enjoying it. Super happy to help people navigate LT if you want! I'm leahbird over there as well. 7y

“as much as one might desire change, one has to be willing to take a risk, to free-fall, to fail, and that you‘ve got to let go of the past”

Finished this book last night. I enjoyed reading Harold‘s ups and downs journey, although I found some part is unnecessary.

#bookhaul Don't tell The Strand, but this weekend I found a new fav bookstore contender in Saratoga Springs NY - Northshire Bookstore - anyone ever been? Great layout, staff recommendations everywhere, perfect blend of new books & deals, great selection, and a music section too. I was in town for a wedding and had to make these selections #underpressure with the wedding hours away but I think I did pretty well. #septembowie @Marchpane @Cinfhen

A hilarious dark (dark, DARK!) comedy/satire that breaks down all the cultural norms associated with nuclear family life and in doing so, offers hope in place of cynicism and reassures us that we are never beyond repair.
