The House of Gucci
The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed | Sara G. Forden
Did Patrizia Reggiani murder her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci, in 1995 because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because her glamorous ex was preparing to marry his mistress, Paola Franchi? Or is there a possibility she didn't do it at all? In this gripping account of the ascent, eventual collapse, and resurrection of the Gucci dynasty, Sara Gay Forden takes us behind the scenes of the trial and exposes the passions, the power, and the vulnerabilities of the greatest fashion family of our times.

Ugh! I finally finished this audiobook. This is NOT a True Crime Book!! It's a history of Gucci. The murder is probably about 1 1/2 hours. I would definitely skip it, wish I would have bailed on it.

I'm listened to this as I did some chores around the house and baked some peanut butter cookies 🍪 So far, it's more of a history of the Gucci family than a True Crime Book. I will listen to more tomorrow.

Last book of the #NovelNovember #Readathon
I have finally finished The house of Gucci and let me tell you it was boring as Hell!
Bogged down by way too much family drama and politics I had to go back and find when the death happened which was over in one sentence.

4-13-22: My 34th finished book of 2022! I feel like I read two books rolled into one. While I wanted to read about the murder of Maurizio Gucci ordered by his wife Patrizia, I got more of a story about the family business of Gucci with some murder sprinkled in. The business side of Gucci is extensive and while interesting it wasn‘t what I was looking for. I do look forward to finally seeing the movie. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣3️⃣4️⃣

I want to see this movie so I figured I would reach the book first. The book heavily focused on the growth of the Gucci business and the family history. It‘s well written, researched, and detailed. I was only interested in the family dynamics, marriage between Maurizio and Patrizia, their children, and relationships after their separation. I like learning about people; not so much about the business. I‘m pretty sure I will like the movie better.

Megabooks This was a bail for me, but I hope to watch the movie. 2y
NatalieR @Megabooks I almost bailed a couple of times. 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I just left the movie and wanted to bail 30 minutes in 😩@megabooks (edited) 2y
NatalieR @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Megabooks Oh no! That‘s such a bummer! 😣 I was hoping the movie was better. Thanks for the info. 2y

Fast paced and entertaining read about the Gucci family and brand. Who were so incredibly messy. I mean Patrizia is the notorious one, but your half way through the book before her crazy starts to eclipse the generations of crazy preceding her.

Forden does a really good job of explaining the family dynamics as well as making the business side of things understandable for finance morons like me.

Better than the movie by all accounts.

My main takeaway from all the Gucci drama (AND THERE IS DRAMA) is that Patrizia Reggiani is simultaneously a badass and absolutely terrifying. I cannot believe the things she did and got away with. How was this real life?!

I enjoyed the history on generations of Gucci, even with their wild soap opera dramatics. It was a long story though to get through the whole brand and not just the family.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

nikirtehsuxlol I‘m going to the theater to watch this tonight! I hesitated bc I heard the movie was three hours, butttt why not?! 2y
nichollinlove @nikirtehsuxlol This is one that I think would actually be really great as a movie. I'm excited see Driver and Gaga as Maurizio and Patrizia. I think they'll be excellent. 2y
nikirtehsuxlol The movie was pretty good and worth a watch imho! Patrizia seems like a piece of worrrrrk 2y
nichollinlove @nikirtehsuxlol An understatement ? I could not believe that she chose to stay in jail because she "had never worked a day" and "wasn't going to start now" ? 2y

Yeah no. Not in the mood for another 6.5 hours of this. I‘m not sure I ever will be. This is a bit of a disappointment.

@TheAromaofBooks this is my #doublespin. I tried.

Two positive reviews coming soon!

britt_brooke Bummer! 2y
Megabooks @britt_brooke yeah, I just found it boring AF. 2y
Cinfhen I liked all the corporate/ financial backstabbing - family fights but it does get VERY technical. You might not enjoy those aspects either @Cathythoughts I‘m still VERY MUCH looking forward to the movie 🍿 2y
Cathythoughts Oh dear 😬.. I‘ll give it a go anyway. My son saw the movie & found it very good. I‘ll try the book first , I‘m ready to bail if necessary… you win a few you lose a few 🤷🏼‍♀️🤞🏻 I definitely foresee skimming @Cinfhen (edited) 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @Cathythoughts the movie is probably better. I was not down for the 16 hour audiobook!! 😬😬 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Cinfhen did you get to see the movie? We just got home and I wanted to bail 30 minutes into it 😩 2y
Cinfhen I did see the movie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I was disappointed but my hubby liked it. Even though the book was a little winded I thought it explained everything so much better than the movie. I thought the soundtrack was fun. And GaGa was good. But I agree, it wasn‘t nearly as good as I was expecting. 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @Cinfhen kinda glad I skipped the movie now! 2y

Bailedbailed

I am a third of the way through the audiobook and twenty minutes has been dedicated to what I would consider true crime. I just can‘t bring myself to care about a rich family that makes bags that are half of my annual income. I gave it a try, but I shall walk away from this before I get frustrated with listening about the family fighting over whether Gucci should make perfume or not.

Finished listening to this on the car yesterday; I really enjoyed it. It‘s not as compelling as other recent non-fiction books I‘ve read recently but still a good read.

It skews a lot more towards the financial side of the Gucci business, rather than the more salacious murder (the subject of the recent Gaga film) but I don‘t mind that side of things so didn‘t find it boring.

Cinfhen Exactly how I felt!! Still can‘t wait to see the film 2y

Bought this at the airport and started it while waiting for my first flight. I was absorbed by this true story. The author goes into such detailed history of the family going all the way back to the very first Gucci business. I had no idea it was made into a movie. This literally has it all love, hate, family scandal. In many ways this is a sad, sad all too real story.

This became VERY convoluted!!! I admire the author‘s attention to detail and thorough research but sheesh…the inner financial workings of the fashion industry was TEDIOUS!! Aside from that, The House of Gucci was phenomenal. I really enjoyed learning about the humble beginnings of this luxury brand & then all the scandalous family power plays that led to the murder of Maurizio Gucci. Eager to watch the film, but still a light pick.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I want to watch the movie!! 2y

squirrelbrain Ooh I saw this in the paper last weekend, I think - is this the one they‘ve made into a film with Lady Gaga? 2y
Cinfhen Yesssss @squirrelbrain I‘m 💯 going to see the film after the book!!! My hubby worked in mergers & acquisitions for a number of years, so I‘m enjoying all the financial maneuvering too. It‘s SO JUICY @Centique SO MUCH FAMILY DRAMA!!!! 2y

Megabooks I have this in my audible queue. 2y
Cinfhen I‘m 8 hours in and dying to know who killed Maurizio @Megabooks even though I can Google it. It‘s a little bit long in terms of all the family bickering over ownership of the company and stock shares but I don‘t mind as M used to work in mergers & acquisitions so I get it. 2y
marleed Oh I experienced this an audio this summer. I really enjoyed it. I‘m fascinated by those old families and big companies. 2y

While reading a NF of the Hilton‘s I also read the upcoming film of the Gucci‘s is based on this 2001 NF book. I requested the audio purchase from my library and they obliged. Even though it took me 2 weeks to work through it, I found the story intriguing. I understand how this would be reference for a fascinating rich people problems movie.

Megabooks I picked up this audiobook as a daily deal. I should move it up the TBR. 3y
marleed I was glad I experienced it on audio. I treated it like a couple documentary hours while walking and chores. I‘m not sure I would have finished the physical book, but I really was glad to have a NF take on this family. I didn‘t know anything about them and found myself surprised this famous family was never on my radar. 3y

I was excited to read this one before they release the movie, but I‘m finding myself fighting the urge to skim chapters (gasp)...perhaps this time the movie will be better than the book.
