Skinwalker: A Jane Yellowrock Novel | Faith Hunter
First in a brand new series from the author of the rogue mage novels Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind-a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. But now she's been hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katie's Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who's killing other vamps...

I chose the side book for #ParanormalLoveCrew this month as it was already on my list of books I should pick up.

It took me a little while to get into the 2 narrative styles, of Jane and Beast, but once I did I got totally sucked in.
I do love urban fantasy though!

Jane is a vampire killer, but is hired by vampires to take out a rogue. But during this mission she will also begin to discover more about her own nature and how she came to be.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 311.

A fun, thrilling and well written urban fantasy.

Jane Yellowrock was a fun and feisty heroine; beautifully flawed, exceedingly powerful and stubbornly independent. The introduction to the world of witches, vamps and other supernaturals was simple but worked perfectly. I really enjoyed this story, and I'm going to be moving into book 2 as soon as I can.

Gissy Sounds good!🤗 4y

Read this because so many people rave about this series in a UF Facebook group I‘m in. First in Jane Yellowrock series. I was very excited as I started reading it because I was thoroughly enjoying it and getting excited about the prospect of a new series. She shares her body with “Beast”, a large puma, and can shapeshift to Beast at will. She hunts vampires. In the end it was ok. Probably last book for a while as uni semester starts this week.

I love these #Audible book sales. It‘s a good excuse for a #bookhaul I‘m intrigued most by Skinwalker, it‘s written by Faith Hunter. Has anyone read it?

Literary_Siren I haven‘t but I‘m definitely intrigued! It sounds interesting. 5y
Derf @Literary_Siren I‘m starting it this weekend I think. Let‘s hope it goes well! 5y

After reading the Soulwood series I wanted more from the main story, so I downloaded this book. I can compare this book to the early Anita Blake books, which I absolutely loved and some of the best books I have read. This book gave me what I have been searching for in a book: the mystery, the twisted plots, strong main characters and an unpredictable ending! I love the details in this book and in the scene depiction! I highly recommend this book!!

I really liked parts of this book but I had trouble getting used to the choppy writing style of the "Beast" voice.

You know when a #series gets so long that you despair and turn your back? That was me with Faith Hunter's vampire-fighting series (plus, I'm sick of fangs). But I really want more urban fantasy. I just plowed through Skinwalkers. Jane is OK but no romance...do you love it? Should I keep going? #romantsy #urbanfantasy #vampires

Elisa I liked the Witching Savannah series by J.D. Horn — not a lot of fighting but lots of mystery and some family feuds and stuff — I found it interesting and unexpected, which is more than I can say for a lot of books where I see the "twist" coming a mile away! 7y
Elisa And then there is the Mortal Instruments series, which is YA but I really enjoyed. 7y
Elisa And if you don't mind a bit of smut and haven't yet read them, there's the Merry Gentry series. There is more sex as the story progresses, but there is also a good plot underneath IMO. (edited) 7y

TaylorMay I've only read the first book. And it's another with a lot of books in the series but Storm Front starts The Dresden Files books. I know a good amount of people that have loved his 2 main series 7y
Leniverse You've read the Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs, right? Because if you haven't, that's your next series. (Although it is another never ending one, but it's one I haven't gotten tired of.) Has werewolves and scary fae, only the occasional vampire. 7y
CoffeeK8 Seconding the Mercy Thompson. Also Ilona Andrews, she has a bunch of series options, her The Edge series is great and a little older. (edited) 7y
EloisaJames @Leniverse I have and I love it but I skipped the last one--in hardcover and I'd love to see something new. Did you read that one? 7y
EloisaJames @CoffeeK8 I've read all of Ilona's books multiple times!! 7y
EloisaJames @TaylorMay I tried the Dresden Files years ago but will again, thanks! 7y
EloisaJames @Elisa I downloaded The Line--thank you!! 7y
CoffeeK8 Me too! They're amazing! What about Devon Monk? 7y
Moonpa Kelley Armstrong- Otherworld series with traditional werewolves, witches etc OR her Cainsville series with superstitions. And I'm starting the steampunk-ish series by Kristen Callihan - sub-genre adjacent but will still scratch the urban fantasy itch. 7y
Leniverse I'm waiting for the paperback of the latest Mercy Thompson. I second @Moonpa in recommending Kelley Armstrong, especially the Cainsville series. I've read most of the Otherworld series too, but I tired of it and haven't read the last couple. 7y
melissanorr If you haven't read the Cal Leandros series by Thurman, I highly recommend it. No real romance but it does explore the nature of family and those types of relationships. 7y
Dogearedcopy I like Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson/Grave series (just don't binge on them back-to-back or the cut & pasted sections will be too obvious.) Paranormal Romance Thriller with a very hot male lead! 😉 7y
Dogearedcopy I love the Dresden Files in audio (narrated by James Marsters.) This is one of those series in which the audiobook narrator takes less than stellar writing and turns into a great performance. James Marsters *is* Harry Dresden! ❤️ 7y
MrsMetcalfeReads I love the Mercy Thompson series and the spin off Alpha and Omega series. There a newish author Meg Collett that has a series called Fear University that's really good. I've read the first three books and loved them so far. 7y
Elisa @EloisaJames cool, I hope you like it! Looks like you got lots of recommendations! 7y
EloisaJames @MrsMetcalfeReads thank you!! I just downloaded Fear University. It looks really interesting. 7y
EloisaJames @melissanorr thanks! I just got a sample--never heard of it. 7y
Christy2318 My favorite urban fantasy after Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson is The Sentinels of New Orleans series by Suzanne Johnson. The first book is a little too much like Sookie Stackhouse but it takes off creatively in book two. There are some really fun characters in the books including the historically undead Jean Lafitte and a Cajun shapeshifting merman. 7y
Jaya Second the Darynda Jones rec. Also Seanan McGuire's October Daye; the romance is slow burn 7y
KarmonR I do love the Skinwalker series. I like the integration of Native American myth, Jane's evolution, the relationship with the Younger brothers, and eventually there is some romance. 7y
NMaret Darinda's Charlie Davidson series is really good I just began reading it late last year 7y

I wouldn't have picked this up if it weren't for a readalong bc it's about Cherokee lore & written by a white woman. But egads, this book is racist & likes to think it isn't. Aside from the protagonist *thinking* she is Cherokee, it uses magical Indian & black magic tropes that aren't handled well. She transforms into a cat literally named Beast *that can smell melanin.* NOPE. Also not written well. This is the least of its problems. Stay away. 😬

Holy moly this book is problematic AF. 😱 I've been reading it for an urban fantasy book club and our discussions so far have centered around the laughably bad writing and its racism. Only 5 more chapters to go and then I'll report back in detail. At least Noodle's cute. #thebookishferrets

CherylDeFranceschi Noodle is, indeed, cute. 8y
Megabooks Noodle ❤️❤️ 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Read the first bunch of these with a book club and then bailed on the series too. Maybe try Mercy Thompson, or Kate Daniels instead. 8y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Or The a Fever series. 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks for the recs. I'm a hard pass on the Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews because they're similarly problematic. White women need to stop using Native lore and still falling back on stereotypes. I've been meaning to give Karen Marie Moning a try though, but I've been putting it off bc while I love urban fantasy, I'm not a fan of romance heavy plots. She's more paranormal romance, no? How steamy are they? (edited) 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist Well, there's a love triangle that doesn't go anywhere for a few books as the heroine can't really trust either of them, no one is a 'white knight' in that serious. Eventually she does pick one, but I'd probably consider it more Urban than PR, Although oddly I would have labeled Skinwalker as a PR so maybe my dividing line isn't the best to go by. Although I should warn you there are some definite trigger warnings areas that... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...arise as the series progresses. She did have an earlier series that was PR called the Highlander series, the kind with a HEA in each book, but they still had an overarching storyline going through. Some of the lore she started there continues into the Fever series, but it essentially starts out as a whodunnit with paranormal players, and the heroine can't trust anybody, for many many books. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist The Native areas in a Mercy is what popped it into my head, I much preferred it to Skinwalker. Plus I thought a Mercy was a much more independent women in many ways. I didn't realize Ilona Andrews had any native elements in Kate Daniels, guess I need to go back and reread with fresh eyes. I liked her ability to spin stories out of multiple myth pantheons, and how they might play out in a future world. I've always appreciated 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...and author who knows their myths and legends and can spin them in new ways. 8y

To be honest, #autobuyauthors isn't something I do. I will check out new stuff by authors I love, but I find I can be fussy when it comes to my reading mood. However, I do have a few auto-buy series: Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin, Anne Bishop's Others, Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock, and Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson. #marchintoreading @RealLifeReading

I loved this book! So much was going on all the time, there was never any lull in the excitement. Jane is strong and independent and Beast is the same way. All the characters were very distinct and well written. I will definitely be reading more of this series!
