A Week in Winter
A Week in Winter | Maeve Binchy
Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone Houses big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms. John, the American movie star, thinks he has arrived incognito; Winnie and Lillian are forced into taking a holiday together; Nicola and Henry, husband and wife, have been shaken by seeing too much death practicing medicine; Anders hates his fathers business, but has a real talent for music; Miss Nell Howe, a retired schoolteacher, criticizes everything and leaves a day early, much to everyones relief; the Walls are disappointed to have won this second-prize holiday in a contest where first prize was Paris; and Freda, the librarian, is afraid of her own psychic visions. Sharing a week with this unlikely cast of characters is pure joy, full of Maeves trademark warmth and humor. Once again, she embraces us with her grand storytelling. This ebook edition includes photos from the landscape of A WEEK IN WINTER and a Reading Group Guide.

The moral of this story could be: “you suffer, occasionally meet interesting people, and then you die” set against the backdrop of lovely Ireland.

A Week in Winter seemed a bit different than the other Maeve Binchy books I've read, but not in a bad way at all. I love how she wove so many different characters' lives together, and I love how we got to know each character's back story as well as how they changed because of their week at Stone House.

Thank you @Andrew65 for introducing me to Maeve Binchy through your buddy reads a few years ago!

Andrew65 I loved those Buddy Reads as I do her boos. Just a shame I have read them all and there will be no more 😔

Pleased to hear I helped to introduce her to you.

This was a reread, Binchy‘s novels are always comfort reads for me. Slowly we are introduced to new characters who are staying at an inn on the West Coast of Ireland. The chapters read like standalone shortstories, but they layer together to create a sweet picture of complicated people who cross paths during their week-long vacations. I love that there are not simple resolutions with every story. Some people don‘t change, others do, that‘s life.

Just finished my #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks !

Some of the chapters dragged on but it was a nice slice of life-esque novel with an interesting cast of characters. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it but it wasn't terrible. 😅🤷🏽‍♀️

Sadly the first Maeve Binchy book I pick up to read was her last written. It felt more like a collection of short stories and I think perhaps thats why I didn‘t love it. For years I have heard rave reviews about Maeve Binchy and I was somewhat expecting more of a Patrick Taylor type read where I could devour the beauty of Ireland and fall in love with the quaint and quirky characters. I didn‘t feel either with this read, but that won‘t deter me.

marleed I had the same experience with the same book last year. But I‘m going to give her another go this year. 5y
TheBookHippie I didn‘t like this one either. I‘ve now read all her books and this tagged book was not her at all. 5y

My first Maeve Binchy!! I enjoyed this cozy read about Stone House and its first set of guests!! So much fun meeting each character with their own vignettes...and who can resist a little black and white cat named Gloria? And talk about puffins, and a librarian with “second sight”. 3.5⭐️

A collection of vignettes each dedicated to one of the novel‘s characters, with some background story of the decisions and life events that lead them to book a ‘week in winter‘ at the newly opened Stone House hotel. A light, cozy read with wonderfully descriptive passages of the Irish countryside and its inhabitants. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #booked2019 #booked2019winter #irishauthor #setinIreland

Question 4 of 4

CarolynM I really don't know if I would tell. I don't think I would have run away from the restaurant. I'd like to think I'd have given him a cheery greeting. But then, knowing how bad I am at reading situations I would probably put my foot in it with both of them without realising I was doing it😁 6y
Andrew65 @CarolynM This is a really difficult one. Tell or not tell? Whatever you do you end up hurting that person. Possibly feel I‘d have to say something otherwise like lying to your friends! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @CarolynM I think it‘s best to tell because nothing worse than feeling like everyone knew except you. 6y

Miss Nell Howe and Freda Chapters

Question 3 of 4

CarolynM Pretty much the same way most friends are treated when someone falls in love. If the relationship had been a good, lasting one she would have moved into a more balanced way of dividing her time the way most of us do. But she never got a chance to get past that first infatuation and unfortunately he wasn't worth it. 6y
Andrew65 She fell big and hard, and forgot her friends and then used them! Not good! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @CarolynM So many do forget their friends in a time like that and you never know when the relationship will go sour and you‘ll need your friends to help you through it. Need to balance your time like Carolyn said. 6y

Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Yes, I was in great need of this recharge too. Group reads keep me going and help ensure I find time for reading which destresses me! TheBookHippie @CarolynM Right??? This surprised me too. Odd. 6y
Andrew65 How bizarre was this. She gets a present from her and it turns out to be a gift from a parent she hadn‘t opened. How mean spirited! And as @TheBookHippie said odd. She may have not had the best upbringing but not allowing herself to live. @CarolynM 6y

I always enjoy Maeve Binchy books, but this wouldn‘t be my favourite because in the main it was a collection of stories about the different people staying for a week‘s holiday in Western Ireland. I prefer stories to have more depth & prefer her bigger story books she writes as a result. If you like short stories I definitely recommend this as it was very well written & it had a good group of characters, as well as a good backdrop and context.

Andrew65 Thanks to all that took part in the Buddy Read. The #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead in January will be Echoes, which is by the look of it a much bigger story. This will start on January 19th, hope to see you all there. (edited) 6y
EadieB @andrew65 I wouldn‘t consider it a favorite either. I felt pretty much the same as you. 6y
Kaye I agree about the Binchy books. I‘ve liked all that I‘ve read but not quite as enthused with this short story/ character type. Like Evening Class, Lilac Bus. I liked her longer ones much better. 6y

Between a pick and so-so for me. I felt like we were tripping along the surface of the story and the characters, never getting a chance to be truly invested. Still, there was enough happening to make it an entertaining read. Thanks for the buddy read @Andrew65
#MaeveBinchyBuddyRead #AWeekInWinter

Kaye Binchy books are all good, but different levels of good. I usually really like the biggest ones the most. I haven‘t read this one yet. Most of the skinniest ones are good enough to keep reading, but too much like short stories to me. Either too many characters or they‘re not developed enough (edited) 6y
CarolynM @kaye I read the early ones many years ago and my memory is that they were much more detailed than this one. I particularly liked 6y
Kaye Yes, Echoes was one of my favorites. I also liked The Glass Lake. 6y

Anders and The Walls Chapters

Question 4 of 4

EadieB The Walls just seemed like complainers to me. Then when they found out the first prize was a rip-off then they calmed down. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Didn‘t like them and the way they moaned about only getting the second prize. How awful that they settl d down once they knew the winner wasn‘t enjoying it. My least favourite chapter. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree they were not very nice. How about the way she called them up like she was from the company who posted the competition? Not right at all to do that! 6y
See All 6 Comments
CarolynM I didn't like them much, either. They were very self absorbed. I thought it was a bit unbelievable that they were so convinced they were going to win first prize. Even if they won a lot of competitions there must have been plenty they didn't win too. 6y
TheBookHippie @CarolynM self absorbed is it!!!! Yuk. 6y

Question 3 of 4

EadieB I think he finally figured out how he can do both inherit the business and keep Erika too. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB This seems a strange choice to me, surely he should have moved to Gothenburg and Erica. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 At the end I think he said he was going to call Erika. 6y
See All 12 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB He did, would have loved to hear that phone call. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Anders did not strike me as being too bright. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 😂😂😂 Most probably his family limited his development and maturity. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 No wonder why Erika left him. He didn‘t have the capacity to figure things out. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I would imagine he frustrated her! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 For sure! 6y
CarolynM He clearly had some business skills, so running a business in a field that he is passionate about seems like a good plan to me. I think the Erika ship has sailed. (edited) 6y
TheBookHippie @EadieB I don't think ignorance is bliss applies to him . Oye. He seems vapid. 6y
Tove_Reads He can handle disciplined business life, so I think it‘s a good idea. At the same time he can jam as much as he wants to. 6y

Question 2 of 4

EadieB His mother told him that he will inherit his father‘s business and he needs to stay in contact with his father but I think he needs to figure out a way to spend more time with Erika too. I think he has a choice and can inherit the business and keep Erika too! (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB She was right to some extent he did choose to go back and go into the company but he had been brainwashed in this over a number of years. That wasn‘t the right place for him. Whether he is making the right choice or not following his time in Ireland only time will tell. Strange he didn‘t end up going to Gothenburg 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I feel like he will inherit the business no matter what if there aren‘t any other heirs and I don‘t feel like he has to spend his whole like with his father. 6y
See All 8 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB Agreed, not have to sacrifice his life to the company. 6y
CarolynM Within the limits of what is available to us, we all have choice about the life we live. I understand that there were strong parental expectations, but I completely agree with Erika that it was Anders's choice to go along with those expectations or to make his own way in the world. 6y
CarolynM I liked that John Paul and his father simply misunderstood each others' desires. I think that happens quite often between parents and children, but I don't think that was Anders's situation. I think his father was going to be very unhappy with him. But Klara was much better suited to be running the business. 6y
TheBookHippie There's always a choice . As long as you have courage. It's hard for kids and parents when the relationship is strained and full of expectations. 6y
Tove_Reads Well, his mother choice another life, and seemed happy. His father didn‘t seem to find it too weird. Expectations are always there, but in this case Zander‘s would never be happy. An irish bar sounds more like him! 6y

Anders and The Walls Chapters

Question 1 of 4

EadieB To me Anders father seemed very negative to Anders and he seemed a bit old fashioned too! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Far too formal and old fashioned for both Anders and his mother. I wonder if he ever let himself go. He just seems a blank canvas to Anders unless talking about the business. Anders definitely had to break out, I wonder what will happen between him and Erica. 6y
CarolynM He wasn't someone I would want to know, but I think he was pretty satisfied with his life being dominated by his work. The only thing he seemed unhappy about was Anders not being there every evening to tell him what had happened at the firm every day. 6y

Question 4 of 4

Tove_Reads I think they found the answer they were looking for here. They kept on thinking about how unhappy they were. First world problems. But, helping him out made all the difference. 6y
JacqMac I think it‘s the perfect move for them. And by helping Shay the little town already loved and trusts them. That‘s hard to earn in a small town. 6y
EadieB Yes I think they were seriously thinking about the move but the Shay incident sealed it. 6y
See All 8 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB I agree, I felt they were going to do it anyway, this just cemented it. A book about them taking up that role would have been good. 6y

Andrew65 @TheBookHippie These authors just leave us hanging! 🤣 6y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 seriously !!!!! Just rude. 6y
CarolynM I suspect that they are going to feel inadequate wherever they are. It is important to care about the people around us, but we also have to be conscious that we don't always get things right and we can't always prevent bad things from happening. I think that's what they struggle with. 6y

Tove_Reads I understand why they did what they did. She probably would have ended up doing the murder suicide anyway. She just couldn‘t cope with it alone. Good thing nothing happen on board, because that would have been a tragedy for all. 6y
JacqMac I think they did the right thing. And they shouldn‘t feel bad about it. They gave them a lovely vacation. And cared for them as best they could. 6y
EadieB I think they did the right thing by allowing them to finish their vacation aboard the ship because I think Helen had the accident planned. 6y
See All 6 Comments
Andrew65 Now that was a shock! 😢 I feel they did the human thing and they shouldn‘t blame themselves. Not sure anything they did could have prevented this. 6y
TheBookHippie They did the humane thing. Sometimes although that's difficult it's the only thing to do. I think it was right. 6y
CarolynM I understood their feelings of responsibility in relation to the deaths at the hospital, but not so much in relation to this incident. Reporting the situation would not have prevented what happened. If they felt they should have recognised the signs that the daughter was planning to do it, that wasn't made clear at all. 6y

Tove_Reads They all seem to be stuck. Unhappy, even though everyone else think they have such fabulous lives. He‘s made many selfish mistakes, but at least he‘s thinking about it now. 6y
JacqMac It doesn‘t seem like it was a happy life. He made some bad decisions. But he might fix that now. 6y

Andrew65 Definitely made many bad decisions and now left alone. Hard to feel too sorry for him as been quite selfish and treated his first wife very badly. 6y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 I'm with you. I can't muster up any sympathy !! 6y

Winnie Chapter

Question 4 of 4

EadieB @Andrew65 The fact that Winnie and Lillian were trapped and spent the time singing songs brought them closer together and I think they will get along in the future too. 6y
CarolynM They let go of their public facades and became more honest with each other. Also, they were forced to think about what was really important. I think they've got more chance of getting along in future, but there will probably always be some level of competition between them. (edited) 6y
JacqMac Their true selves came out a bit. I think it allowed Lillian to see how strong Winnie can be. That she might not be a bad choice for a wife. 6y
Tove_Reads Lilian sort of lost her face, became soft for a second and admitted she is too afraid to lose her son. Definitely better between them now, but L is and will be an overprotective mother. 6y
Andrew65 The danger did lead to honest talk, but I still feel she will be a nightmare in the future! Wouldn‘t want to be in Lillian‘s shoes. @EadieB @CarolynM @JacqMac @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y

CarolynM He doesn't realise his mother is threatened by his lady friends so he's taking it all at face value. I think Winnie may have been slower to pick up the vibe if Lillian hadn't appeared so differently from her expectations. 6y
JacqMac Teddy is a little bit of a moron. 6y
Tove_Reads Guys like him are totally blind when it comes to their mothers. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac 😂😂😂🤣😂 Oh yes! How stupid was he. 6y

Winnie Chapter

Question 2 of 4

EadieB @Andrew65 Run away! Run away as quick as she can! 6y
CarolynM I'm a great believer in honest communication in relationships. I think she should have told a Teddy exactly how she perceived the meeting. 6y
JacqMac Yes, @EadieB 😂 This relationship is off to a very bad start. 6y
Andrew65 She had two choices either run as far and as fast as you can, or speak to Teddy about her. She didn‘t do either of these and look what happened as a result. A holiday with the horrid woman for a week. She came across as quite weak in this. @EadieB @CarolynM @JacqMac 6y

Winnie Chapter

Question 1 of 4

EadieB @andrew65 Looks like Winnie will have her hands full with Teddy‘s mother and Teddy is such a mama‘s boy! 6y
CarolynM Ugh! 6y
JacqMac Clingy moms are the worst. 6y
Tove_Reads She needs a new man so she can let her son run free. 6y
Andrew65 Totally possessive of her son! A horrid woman, avoid at all costs! @EadieB @CarolynM @JacqMac @Tove_Reads 6y

Pickpick

I‘m so glad for the opportunity to finally pick this up off my shelf for the #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead with @Andrew65 and @EadieB ! Binchy was one of the first adult authors that I read, and I hadn‘t read her in years. This took me back to everything I loved about her books: the place, the characters, and her ability to draw you in to a story. A definite pick from me! #AWeekInWinter

EadieB Glad you liked it! 6y
Andrew65 She does write such great stories with interesting characters. 6y

Question 4 of 4

Bklover Oh hell, I bought this book for the buddy read and then forgot all about the buddy read!! 😲😧😳 6y
Andrew65 @Bklover We‘re not that far in, hopefully you‘ll be able to catch up. 6y
EadieB I would like to see her stay in Stoneybridge and help Chickie with the hotel and restaurant. 6y
See All 9 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m sure this is what she will do, and it feels this is the right thing to do. Will she meet and fall in love with a hotel guest? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 That is a good possibility! 6y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 @EadieB I hope she stays and helps!! 6y
JacqMac I want her to stay, too. 6y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie @JacqMac I think she will stay. 6y
CarolynM It was good to see the way Orla dealt so confidently with sexual harassment. I also liked that she insisted on Chicky learning from her as she learnt from Chicky. 6y

Rigger and Orla Chapters

Question 3 of 4

EadieB I think Carmel is helping Nuella with this problem and hopefully Nuella will respond in a positive way soon. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I get the impression Carmel‘s discussion with her is a breakthrough moment. Hopefully this has helped her out of the hole she has been in. Hopeful things will be better in the future. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree Carmel did an excellent job in telling Nuella that Rigger needs her in his life. 6y

TheBookHippie Sometimes looking at it differently or taking yourself out of a situation and looking outside in helps. Hearing from someone you're willing to listen to is important I think she'll look at it better now. I hope! 6y
JacqMac Hopefully. I think she will feel wanted now. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac Was it she wasn‘t feeling wanted or feeling a failure as a parent and therefore better without her in his life? @TheBookHippie 6y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 exactly you never know -this is a very real possibility !!! 6y
CarolynM Hopefully she will get treatment for her condition and be ready to resume the relationship 6y

Rigger and Orla Chapters

Question 2 of 4

EadieB She seems to be very depressed over her son‘s past behavior but he‘s in a better position now so I think she needs to try to put the past behind. 6y
TheBookHippie It's hard to say for another person. I think you can step back yourself-self preservation or deal with your disappointed self- but to your child you need to appear always available and they always need to feel your unconditional love. I'd write . No matter what. 6y
JacqMac I think she feels very guilty. But I wish she could see she‘s hurting him more by staying away. The past is the past. 6y
Andrew65 This is very difficult. She feels she has failed as a parent and is better off without her, but as a parent still needs to be there for her child. @EadieB @JacqMac @TheBookHippie 6y
CarolynM I think the implication is that she is suffering from depression so I don't think it's fair to be judgemental about her actions. I was glad that she seemed to have been convinced to get help at the end of the chapter. 6y

Rigger and Orla Chapters

Question 1 of 4

EadieB It seems always to be a good idea for a family to know about that. 6y
Andrew65 Always so sad when they can‘t tell their family. They need family around them at a time like that, for a support network if not anything else. 6y
TheBookHippie Not sure -this is difficult for me to say--my experiences: I mentored young moms as a doula 28 years ages 12-24 --now I just go to the center once a month . The parents and families on the whole are awful and quite often a stumbling block. It's usually easier to get a plan and be certain and then inform family and be strong enough to take the results. 6y
See All 11 Comments
JacqMac I‘m with @TheBookHippie on this one. Sometimes families aren‘t very supportive. We had to cut my in-laws out of our family. Their Christian selves don‘t like that we have a gay kid. And I refuse to let them be part of our lives, if they won‘t support him. 6y
TheBookHippie @JacqMac my in-laws too ugh 6y
Andrew65 I agree there are times (far to many) where this is just not possible and are part of the problem (or the problem) and not part of the solution! @EadieB @TheBookHippie @JacqMac 6y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 AND ILL NEVER GET IT!!!! Ugh. 6y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Neither do I. 6y
TheBookHippie Okay @Andrew65 I'm off to cook!!! I'll check in Sunday night!!! 6y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Have fun 😳 👨‍🍳 See you Sunday. 🎄 6y
CarolynM Again, agreeing with @TheBookHippie If your family is unsupportive you are better off without them 6y

EadieB I like the book but then I haven‘t read a bad Binchy book. Her characters are always very interesting! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I think her characters, her settings (those small towns) and the contexts she sets up are always wonderful. Love this from the first page and can‘t wait to read on. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I always want to read on with her books! 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB I‘ve made these sections a bit smaller for those that don‘t read as fast. @kspenmoll 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 that‘s fine! A got other books going too! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I know, it‘s busy busy busy for both of us. Thankfully last day of school term tomorrow. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yeah! Time off to read! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 😊😊😊😍😍😍 6y
JamieArc Binchy was one of the first adult authors I started reading when I was young and loved them. This was my first Binchy book in years and it takes me back. I love it as much as I did her other books when I was young. Loving the setting and the characters and am flying through it! 6y
amiekreger I am absolutely hooked! I have to admit that this is my first Binchy. I have wanted to read something by her and I‘m so glad I finally did. 6y
TheBookHippie I'm hooooooked!!! I like it. People fighting for a life other than expected of them. 6y
JacqMac I love it. I love anything Binchy though. She makes it so easy to leave reality and get sucked into the story. 6y
Andrew65 @amiekreger I love her books and happy to read many of them again. We are working through her books reading one each month starting on 19th of each month. Great to have you with us and hear you are enjoying them. She is such a great storyteller. 6y
Andrew65 @JamieArc they certainly don‘t seem to date. I read this some years ago but cannot remember much! Just love her books. 6y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie she is so good at hooking her readers from the very first page. @JacqMac (edited) 6y
CarolynM Interesting style. I almost feel like she is summarising the story more than telling it. She gets away with it, though, by packing in lots of incident. 6y
Tove_Reads I‘m afraid it will be another “bus story”. People know each other, but there is no real plot, and the individual stories don‘t connect. 6y

EadieB I like the hotel venture. I think it‘s a great idea for that location that doesn‘t have anything like that. I think it will be a success. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I agree and I too think it will be a success. I assume this provides a context for the rest of the book, with chapters about visitors that stay at the hotel. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 visitors will be interesting characters too! 6y

amiekreger I feel it will be a success. I‘m really looking forward to the visitors. I wonder who will show up? 6y
TheBookHippie I think so!!! Plus wait for the visitors !!!!! Stories, I assume ! 6y
JacqMac I think it will be a success, too. She‘s become so much stronger and more independent. 6y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie I would agree. 6y
Tove_Reads She works hard, she knows it‘s not easy, and her heart is in the right place. So, yes! 6y

EadieB I don‘t think he was very nice. He totally took advantage of her by taking her to US and they lived in a commune. Then he left and didn‘t help her to get home. Not nice at all. 6y
amiekreger I am not really a fan of his. He was just living the moment and for himself. 6y
TheBookHippie He was just a selfish ship passing in the night buh bye rebelling against what was expected of him as was chicky 6y

JacqMac Walter was very self centered. He was flighty and I don‘t think he cared about her at all. 6y
Andrew65 Very self centred and anti commitment by the look of it. Not really find out enough about him as he was such a small part of the book! @JacqMac @TheBookHippie @amiekreger @EadieB 6y

EadieB She was stupid to go to the US with someone she just met. She should have went right back home when he left her and just said she made a mistake. Then to lie and say he was killed just makes things even worse. Bad no matter how you look at this. 6y
JamieArc I think it was pretty clear that Walter wasn‘t in it for the long haul. Her decisions really annoyed me and made me think I wasn‘t going to like this book, so it was nice to see the person she comes to be back in Ireland. I‘m curious if/when/who will finally find out the truth. 6y
amiekreger I don‘t think it was very smart of her to leave Ireland with someone she just met. She was caught up with the idea of a fairytale though. I did not have a good feeling about Walter. I thought no way is this going to last. You just know that her lying about his death is not going to end well. As with all lies. 6y
See All 8 Comments
TheBookHippie Whelp I'm glad she left she learned a ton and found self reliance and self worth she's owned by no man and lives her own life. I think the Walter thing will haunt her eventually however it got her freedom from a life of doom. 6y
JacqMac Hmmm, well, Walter was obviously a loser. But I don‘t think leaving Ireland was a mistake. She ended up doing quite well for herself. I do think lying to her family about him being dead, isn‘t the best decision though. That‘s eventually going to come out. 6y
Andrew65 I felt it was more stupid to lie to her family about being married and her husband having been killed. I had no problem with her going to the US with him but clear in the end he didn‘t do commitments. She certainly came out of this a stronger person. @JacqMac @EadieB @TheBookHippie @amiekreger @jamiearc (edited) 6y
CarolynM Playing catch up now I've had a chance to read the first few chapters. I was happy with Chicky's decisions. It's not as though she was giving up great opportunities at home and she obviously had the personality to make the most of whatever situation she found herself in. I'm a firm believer in people making their own life choices and have no time for parents trying to direct their adult children's lives. 6y
Tove_Reads I think she got to be herself by leaving. The old Irish family expectations would not have given her much room. It was probably an easier way to just tell them that about Walter. 6y
