Savage Appetites
Savage Appetites: Four True Stories of Women, Crime and Obsession | Rachel Monroe
30 posts | 26 read | 59 to read
A provocative and original investigation of our cultural fascination with crime, linking four archetypesDetective, Victim, Attorney, Killerto four true stories about women driven by obsession. In this illuminating exploration of women, violence, and obsession, Rachel Monroe interrogates the appeal of true crime through four narratives of fixation. In the 1940s, a bored heiress began creating dollhouse crime scenes depicting murders, suicides, and accidental deaths. Known as the Mother of Forensic Science, she revolutionized the field of what was then called legal medicine. In the aftermath of the Manson Family murders, a young woman moved into Sharon Tates guesthouse and, over the next two decades, entwined herself with the Tate family. In the mid-nineties, a landscape architect in Brooklyn fell in love with a convicted murderer, the supposed ringleader of the West Memphis Three, through an intense series of letters. After they married, she devoted her life to getting him freed from death row. And in 2015, a teenager deeply involved in the online fandom for the Columbine killers planned a mass shooting of her own. Each woman, Monroe argues, represents and identifies with a particular archetype that provides an entryway into true crime. Through these four cases, she traces the history of American crime through the growth of forensic science, the evolving role of victims, the Satanic Panic, the rise of online detectives, and the long shadow of the Columbine shooting. In a combination of personal narrative, reportage, and a sociological examination of violence and media in the twentieth and twenty-first century, Savage Appetites scrupulously explores empathy, justice, and the persistent appeal of violence.

I found this absolutely fascinating. Monroe examines 4 major archetypes of women obsessed with true crime and presents a compelling narrative of each along with broader observations about WHY women are so drawn to these stories. A nice accompaniment to some of my summer viewing of I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark and The Genetic Detective. 4🌟

“If the dream is to lose yourself in a cause, you might wake up one day and realize that you‘ve succeeded, and that there‘s hardly anything left of you. Women, who are socially conditioned to be selfless, can be particularly susceptible to a version of heroism that sucks them dry.“
Great book for true crime junkies!

I enjoyed the stories about the women in this book but I didn‘t like the way the author weaved in autobiographical information. It felt confusing and unfocused.

#Novemberwrapup - a little late!
A productive month - my Bookclub pick took me to rural Poland where you could practically smell the damp farmland, I took a road trip with the mob, watch tragedy unfold for the women of Brewster Place, didn‘t really enjoy my journey with the PI in LA, loved delving into the question around why women become fascinated with crime and glad Michelle McNamara wrote so much of herself into the draft of her book.

DGRachel Sounds like a great month for reading! 5y

Meticulous research presented as compelling narrative reframes stories behind what has driven 4 women to spend a lifetime absorbed in crime. From one woman's quest to skill the police to detect crime, preserve evidence and read crime scenes effectively, to members of the Tate family - becoming victims of over zealous advocates. From a jail brides journey to exonerate her man to a woman obsessed with the fame associated with murder.

Soubhiville I saw the author at TX Book Fest, and really enjoyed her talk. She spoke about how she became obsessed with learning about and tracking crime events and that lead her to become a writer about true crime. She also spoke about how these violent crimes effect us as a society and compel our imaginations to want more information. 5y
Mitch @Soubhiville Oh wow - you're so lucky! Ive listened to her on a few podcasts and she sounds really smart. I liked the book a lot 👏 👏 5y

Blaire @Mitch yes. It‘s a podcast I really enjoy and I like their willingness to address tough issues. I love law and order/suspense/true crime so it was interesting to hear them delve into the possibly whys. 5y

This a really unique twist on a crime story. A collection of four “essays” titled The Detective, The Victim, The Defender, and The Killer are presented in precise prose that quickly moves to the heart of each character. The women discussed all represent different figures in four separate crimes that span decades. It wasn‘t what I was expecting but I enjoyed it. 👍🏻 #ITL that in 1910 Alice Wells was the 1st female police officer in the USA.

This book was recommended by Loki: Where Mischief Lies author Mackenzi Lee and I‘m so glad she mentioned it. This was a fascinating book that examined four women and the roles they play in true crime, for every crime has its: Detective, Victim, Attorney and Killer. One of the key things I learned from this book is that there are more women in the field of forensics science than men (TIL, Today I Learned) A must for true crime fans. #NFNov

Attended an interesting panel discussing cultural obsession of women and violence. Fascinating and disheartening. I‘ve stacked both books discussed (I‘ll tag other books in comments) and will hopefully be able to read them in the new year. #txbookfest #txbookfestival

I really enjoyed this #truecrime #nonfiction in which the author holds a mirror up to readers who identify as true crime fans. We have four stories of very different women who embody the following "characters" in true crime: the detective, the victim, the defender, and the killer. This book was super relatable but I did not enjoy the first story as much as the following three.

Monroe profiles four types of women who are obsessed with murder and it‘s pretty good stuff...until she tries to shoehorn Ayn Rand into the narrative. It breaks the flow of the “Killer” chapter and makes it hard to follow. Overall, still a pick for those fascinated with all things murdery.

An interesting twist on women in true crime, not as victims but as aficionados of the genre. Monroe discusses 4 specific women, representative archetypes of those attracted to true crime. I love the genre myself, and while I didn‘t see myself in the extremes these women depicted, I found this book fascinating and absorbing.

I had a surprise delivery at work today -- my favorite pastry from my favorite coffee shop from my son and father in law ♥️
I had the digital #arc of this book but couldn't resist the physical copy at the library. I usually am able to read books much quicker in this format! 📖

LauraJ I‘m still waiting on my library copy. If I find powdered sugar in it, I‘ll know where it came from 😈 5y

Chelsea.Poole @Buechersuechtling They are pretty sweet guys! Although they do go to the shop just about every day after my son's preschool and the library where I work is about two blocks down from the shop and on their way home. But this is the first time I've gotten a treat too! In other words, this needs to happen more often 😉 5y

WOW. This book is definitely not what I expected. It is not the usual true crime narration. The author connects 4 archetypes - Detective, Victim, Defender, Killer - & how crime stories affected them in different ways due to their peculiar obsession with them. I almost bailed on this book but ended up enjoying it way much more than I thought I would!

UPDATE!

✅ Something Personal ➡️ Savage Appetites

I picked this book because it's about women's obsession over true crime stories & how they were affected by it. I'm not obsessed with the crime but am more interested in the investigation & forensics side of this genre.

I almost bailed on this book but glad that I finished it. I ended up enjoying it much more than I thought I would!

3.5 stars

A true crime book focusing on women's obsession with the genre. It includes four stories of women influenced in vastly different ways by a crime, along with the author's personal reactions to and participation in the genre.
Interesting for those that enjoy true crime and appreciate the sociology aspect.

While definitely interesting, this wasn‘t what I expected when I went into it. This reads as a part-memoir, part-biography of women who obsessed over crime. This will appeal to the niche of true crime lovers who are fascinated by those who take their devotion a step further.
