I found this absolutely fascinating. Monroe examines 4 major archetypes of women obsessed with true crime and presents a compelling narrative of each along with broader observations about WHY women are so drawn to these stories. A nice accompaniment to some of my summer viewing of I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark and The Genetic Detective. 4🌟

I enjoyed the stories about the women in this book but I didn‘t like the way the author weaved in autobiographical information. It felt confusing and unfocused.

A productive month - my Bookclub pick took me to rural Poland where you could practically smell the damp farmland, I took a road trip with the mob, watch tragedy unfold for the women of Brewster Place, didn‘t really enjoy my journey with the PI in LA, loved delving into the question around why women become fascinated with crime and glad Michelle McNamara wrote so much of herself into the draft of her book.

Meticulous research presented as compelling narrative reframes stories behind what has driven 4 women to spend a lifetime absorbed in crime. From one woman's quest to skill the police to detect crime, preserve evidence and read crime scenes effectively, to members of the Tate family - becoming victims of over zealous advocates. From a jail brides journey to exonerate her man to a woman obsessed with the fame associated with murder.

Seems an appropriate book to begin whilst in the library cafe!

This a really unique twist on a crime story. A collection of four “essays” titled The Detective, The Victim, The Defender, and The Killer are presented in precise prose that quickly moves to the heart of each character. The women discussed all represent different figures in four separate crimes that span decades. It wasn‘t what I was expecting but I enjoyed it. 👍🏻 #ITL that in 1910 Alice Wells was the 1st female police officer in the USA.

This book was recommended by Loki: Where Mischief Lies author Mackenzi Lee and I‘m so glad she mentioned it. This was a fascinating book that examined four women and the roles they play in true crime, for every crime has its: Detective, Victim, Attorney and Killer. One of the key things I learned from this book is that there are more women in the field of forensics science than men (TIL, Today I Learned) A must for true crime fans. #NFNov

I really enjoyed this #truecrime #nonfiction in which the author holds a mirror up to readers who identify as true crime fans. We have four stories of very different women who embody the following "characters" in true crime: the detective, the victim, the defender, and the killer. This book was super relatable but I did not enjoy the first story as much as the following three.

Monroe profiles four types of women who are obsessed with murder and it‘s pretty good stuff...until she tries to shoehorn Ayn Rand into the narrative. It breaks the flow of the “Killer” chapter and makes it hard to follow. Overall, still a pick for those fascinated with all things murdery.

An interesting twist on women in true crime, not as victims but as aficionados of the genre. Monroe discusses 4 specific women, representative archetypes of those attracted to true crime. I love the genre myself, and while I didn‘t see myself in the extremes these women depicted, I found this book fascinating and absorbing.

WOW. This book is definitely not what I expected. It is not the usual true crime narration. The author connects 4 archetypes - Detective, Victim, Defender, Killer - & how crime stories affected them in different ways due to their peculiar obsession with them. I almost bailed on this book but ended up enjoying it way much more than I thought I would!

I picked this book because it's about women's obsession over true crime stories & how they were affected by it. I'm not obsessed with the crime but am more interested in the investigation & forensics side of this genre.

I almost bailed on this book but glad that I finished it. I ended up enjoying it much more than I thought I would!

A true crime book focusing on women's obsession with the genre. It includes four stories of women influenced in vastly different ways by a crime, along with the author's personal reactions to and participation in the genre.
Interesting for those that enjoy true crime and appreciate the sociology aspect.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it so far!

While definitely interesting, this wasn‘t what I expected when I went into it. This reads as a part-memoir, part-biography of women who obsessed over crime. This will appeal to the niche of true crime lovers who are fascinated by those who take their devotion a step further.
