The Wild Inside
The Wild Inside: A Novel of Suspense | Christine Carbo
24 posts | 18 read | 25 to read
A haunting crime novel set in Glacier National Park about a man who finds himself at odds with the dark heart of the wildand the even darker heart of human nature. It was a clear night in Glacier National Park. Fourteen-year-old Ted Systead and his father were camping beneath the rugged peaks and starlit skies when something unimaginable happened: a grizzly bear attacked Teds father and dragged him to his death. Now, twenty years later, as Special Agent for the Department of the Interior, Ted gets called back to investigate a crime that mirrors the horror of that night. Except this time, the victim was tied to a tree before the mauling. Ted teams up with one of the park officersa man named Monty, whose pleasant exterior masks an all-too-vivid knowledge of the hazardous terrain surrounding them. Residents of the area turn out to be suspicious of outsiders and less than forthcoming. Their intimate connection to the wild forces them to confront nature, and their fellow man, with equal measures of reverence and ruthlessness. As the case progresses with no clear answers, more than human life is at stakeincluding that of the majestic creature responsible for the attack. Teds search for the truth ends up leading him deeper into the wilderness than he ever imagined, on the trail of a killer, until he reaches a shocking and unexpected personal conclusion. As intriguing and alluring as bestselling crime novels by C.J. Box, Louise Penny, and William Kent Krueger, as atmospheric and evocative as the nature writing of John Krakauer and Cheryl Strayed, The Wild Inside is a gripping debut novel about the perilous, unforgiving intersection between man and nature.

My second book bought in Montana. This one was written by a local author who lives in Whitefish where I was staying. The plot was based around Glacier National Park too, and it was so nice to read about a place I am discovering and being able to understand the references and picture the place perfectly. The story follows Ted, a guy who is basically national park police. (Cont. in comments 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻)

i.z.booknook (1) His father died in a bear attack when he was a kid, and he is now investigating a murder that takes place in the park where a bear ate the victim. Ted is battling his own past demons as well as the complexity of a victim that likely deserved what happened to him. The pacing was a little slow in places, and could get repetitive, such can be the nature of investigations. 2mo
i.z.booknook (2) The ending was also a little predictable. However, it was an interesting story, in a really unique setting. (The picture is taken just outside West Yellowstone) 2mo

This book has a strong sense of place and sometimes insightful writing, but overall it needed more editing. I also didn‘t find the story very satisfying for many reasons. Apparently the following books in the series feature a different main character who‘s more compelling than the guy in this book, but even so I don‘t think I‘ll read any further.

In any case #Montana is done and there are only a few states left! #52mysteries

Although fiction, the tone of this book is more dour than other park ranger/warden books I have read. I'm not sure I would have finished it if I wasn't listening to it on audio. The main character was not compelling and I didn't feel attached to his story. There is also extreme violence against dogs at 3 parts in this book that I did not expect and totally hated. I don't think I will continue with this series.

I enjoyed this novel set in the picturesque setting of Glacier National Park (on my bucket list). All the best detectives have demons, but Systead is uniquely impacted by the central case as his father was killed by a grizzly in the park many years ago. Carbo did a good job writing about trauma, however, I found the resolution of the case tragic rather than triumphant. A little too long and slow at times, but a “just fine” read overall. 3⭐️

These are the 4 I‘m thinking of for this round of suspense/mystery/thriller I haven‘t read any of them, but The Cold Inside sounds the most intriguing to me.

🎧 RC Bray narrates so of course I was going to listen 😁 loved his narration. An FBI agent who‘s dad was killed by a bear when he was 16 on a camping trip with him investigates a murder committed in a national park. A man was tied to a tree & mauled/eaten by a grizzly bear. Death by bear. The mystery slowly unfolds & is actually really pretty good. I believe it‘s book one in a series. I‘ll definitely try #2. Thanks Hoopla! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m starting the year off right. 2019 was full of four star books but not many fives. This is definitely a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️which makes me very happy for my first read of 2020. This was an OLD #LitsyRecommends I believe from @Jules7 that I saw and had to read. Not a lot of reviews on it but I loved it- the kind of slow moving mystery that‘s very atmospheric with clues being eked out a bit at a time. Didn‘t guess the ending, definitely recommend!

Bklover Also thanks to my daughter and son-in-law as this was part of my #ChristmasHaul. ❤️❤️❤️ (edited) 5y

The imagery in this book was so beautiful. It was set in Glacier National Park in Montana (I really want to visit there after reading this!) and I really enjoyed the descriptions of the park, I felt like I could picture everything! The mystery was intriguing and the main character was a very interesting point of view to see the story from. Really recommend this book.

CocoReads @KellyK yes, it was. I read it from the library earlier in the year and can‘t get it out of my head. I‘m thinking of picking it for my IRL bookgroup because I think it‘ll be very discussable 7y

I bailed on two books this week! 😭😭😭 This breaks my heart. I really wanted to love both of them. Wolves and bears and wild things are typically a big win for me. But alas. I guess some things just aren't meant to be. #itsnotyouitsme

Sace Aww. I'm sorry. I hope something catches your interest soon. 😔 8y
Cinfhen The Wild Side sounds so good, sorry it wasn't a win for you. Unfortunately I've seen a few bails for Wolves... 8y
