Vermilion | Molly Tanzer
Gunslinging, chain smoking, Stetson-wearing Taoist psychopomp, Elouise "Lou" Merriwether might not be a normal 19-year-old, but she's too busy keeping San Francisco safe from ghosts, shades, and geung si to care much about that. It's an important job, though most folks consider it downright spooky. Some have even accused Lou of being more comfortable with the dead than the living, and, well... they're not wrong. When Lou hears that a bunch of Chinatown boys have gone missing somewhere deep in the Colorado Rockies she decides to saddle up and head into the wilderness to investigate. Lou fears her particular talents make her better suited to help placate their spirits than ensure they get home alive, but it's the right thing to do, and she's the only one willing to do it. On the road to a mysterious sanatorium known as Fountain of Youth, Lou will encounter bears, desperate men, a very undead villain, and even stranger challenges. Lou will need every one of her talents and a whole lot of luck to make it home alive... From British Fantasy Award nominee Molly Tanzer comes debut novel Vermilion, a spirited weird Western adventure that puts the punk back into steampunk.

#OminousOctober #Day2 #Campfire This is another supernatural book in the strange end of the spectrum. Which I love. It‘s a western about a half Chinese psychopomp who works out of San Fran, laying ghosts to rest and dealing with all sorts of creatures including zombies. She takes a trip out to the Rockies looking for missing young Chinese men & there‘s a scene where she‘s attacked while sitting around a campfire🏕 #TeamSlaughter #Scarathlon 6pts

#AlphabetGame #letterV

Finally, tonight‘s letter was another tough one. I read this book my first year on Litsy after it was posted by a friend, and I loved it! 19yr old Lou Merriweather is a Taoist psychopomp, keeping San Francisco safe from ghosts & geung shi. When boys go missing from Chinatown, she saddles up & heads into the Colorado Rockies to investigate, either to bring them back or lay their ghosts to rest. Lots of fun.

#LittensDressedInBlood #Day8 #Ghostbusters This is a blast from my Litsy past. One of the first recs on this platform, it definitely lived up to expectations. A brilliant supernatural western, Lou Merriwether is a gunslinging, chain smoking, Stetson wearing 19yr old Taoist pyschopomp keeping 1800s San Francisco safe from ghosts & geung si. When a bunch of young Chinese boys go missing, she saddles up & heads into the Rockies to investigate.

Okay, @Wife @StephanieGeiser and @emilyjwhit9
Here‘s my stack of paperback choices that are under 400 pages and not too weird for most readers.

Have you already read any of these? #lmpbc Anything set your heart aflame?

LauraJ @Sweettartlaura Crap! I was about to go to 🛏. Somehow sleep doesn‘t seem so important now. 6y
Sweettartlaura 🤣. It‘s so good 😊 and if you like it, you‘ll love it, & then chase down all the rest of Maggie O‘Farrell‘s books 📚❤️ 6y
Wife I‘ve read The Good Nurse. But of the other choices, I‘m most interested in: The Last Ballad and The Annie Year. 6y
StephanieGeiser Good news! I haven‘t read any of these! This one has been on my list for a while so just for that reason I‘ll say I‘m most interested in it - 6y
StephanieGeiser I am also happy to put in votes for other books if that makes your life easier. Just let me know! 6y
Billypar I've only read The God of Small Things but really liked it. The Eisenberg title is great ☺️ 6y
emilyjwhit9 Sorry so late in my response. But I have not read any of those and am fine with whatever. 6y
LauraJ Well, okay. The Annie Year and All The Ugly... both are tales with meth labs! So, I‘m going with one of those. 6y
LauraJ @Billypar @Eggs I found a note reminding me to read it in Sept. for a #buddyread, but I can‘t remember who‘s hosting. 6y

Pickpick

Rating this a pick for the totally unique premise and diverse cast of characters but in all reality this was probably a 3.5 star read for me. The pacing was a bit off at times and the ending definitely didn't do it for me but I loved Lou Merriwether and would be on board to check out a sequel if one comes out.

#90sInJuly #day30 #CowboyDan This is, I believe, the only western book involving cowboys I own. I'm not a big fan of westerns as a whole, it's just not my genre, but this is not just a western, it's a paranormal romp through the deserts of California & Colorado. Lou Merriwether is a gun slinging, chain smoking, Stetson wearing Taoist psychopomp who's investigating the disappearance of young Chinese males from San Francisco. It's a wild ride!🐲

DivineDiana It sounds like it! 7y

#RockInMay #day12 #DustInTheWind This is a brilliant steampunk paranormal ride into the Wild West. Full of dust, ghosts, cowboys, missing Chinese immigrants & a gunslinging, chainsmoking, stepson wearing Taoist psychopomp, Lou Merriweather, it's a journey from San Francisco to the depths of the Colorado Rockies.

AudreyGreathouse Isn't this book awesome? I'm loving hour down to earth it is. The funny thing is, despite how candid it is about womanhood, it still reads like a book I think guys would enjoy... Which can be a rear thing in YA... 8y

Lizpixie This is an awesome book! Enjoy🙂 8y
Carol So this is nerdy and worky but when I'm reading a book on my kindle and want to show off the cover in color I'll download the jacket image from google onto my tablet or phone and use that for the photograph. It's rare that I do that but some covers are meant to be presented in full color! 8y

It's #FunFridayPhoto time! Today's photo: Show off your favorite bookmarks! I have had this zipper bookmark for several years. My cats love to chew it, so I have to hide it when it's not in a book. (My last favorite bookmark was a wooden one from WORD Bookstore, but my old cat bit it in half. She was fierce.) How about you? Be sure to tag me in the photo so I can see it!

megoc Oh, my bookmarks are all scraps of paper and receipts. I always lose the fancy ones. 8y
LiteraryinPA The zipper is awesome! 8y
DreesReads I have a bookmark-chewing cat too. She also loves to just pull them out of the book--and then she leaves it there. What is up with these cats? 8y

Mayread I place smaller books inside larger books. Or. I. Uh. Put them face down. 8y
Laura317 I collect them whenever I go on a trip. My favorite purchased one is from the Tower of London, but my all time favorite is one my daughter made. ❤️❤️❤️ 8y
BekahB I've lost some beautiful bookmarks with tassels to my cats...and also the places I've left off at in my books. They like to pull them out of my books and run off with them when I'm not looking. 8y
IndyHannaJones This book sounds amazing!!! I have give up buying fancy book marks as I always lose them...and find them months later in weird places like the pantry 8y
Susanita My cat chews on the books themselves! To save my place I have several bookmarks in different formats but as often as not use a random slip of paper. 8y
ImAnAdult That bookmark is ah-may-zing! 8y
balletbookworm My cats have eaten many a tassel off of a bookmark. 8y
Mimi28 I had bought a $15 one from Barnes and Noble that had a light and a timer on it. It got tossed around in my bed and covers sooo much. I really neglected it. Both the timer and the light stopped working I threw it away 🙄 8y
Zelma That zipper tab would last about a week with my three cats! @Susanita mine do too. I have to put library books in hard-to-reach spots or in closets to preserve them. 8y
BookMusings I bet you rarely ever need bookmarks right?? :) 8y
thebookmagpie That's brilliant! 8y
LivinginaLibrary What do cats have against bookmarks? I'm always having to protect mine. 8y
Sue @LivinginaLibrary I think cats are against books in general, making any reading accoutrements fair game as well :) 8y
