City of Dragons
City of Dragons: Volume Three of the Rain Wilds Chronicles | Robin Hobb
29 posts | 46 read | 17 to read
New York Times bestselling author Robin Hobbone of the most important writers in 21st-century fantasy (Contra Costa Times)continues her enthralling fantasy saga of dragons and their keepersCity of DragonsVolume Three of the Rain Wilds ChroniclesOnce, dragons ruled the Rain Wilds, tended by privileged human servants known as Elderlings. But a series of cataclysmic eruptions nearly drove these magnificent creatures to extinction. Born weak and deformed, the last of their kind had one hope for survival: to return to their ancient city of Kelsingra. Accompanied by a disparate crew of untested young keepers, the dragons embarked on a harsh journey into the unknown along the toxic Rain Wild River. Battling starvation, a hostile climate, and treacherous enemies, dragons and humans began to forge magical connections, bonds that have wrought astonishing transformations for them all. And though Kelsingra is finally near, their odyssey has only begun.Because of the swollen waters of the Rain Wild River, the lost city can be reached only by flighta test of endurance and skill beyond the stunted dragons strength. Venturing across the swift-running river in tiny boats, the dragon scholar Alise and a handful of keepers discover a world far different from anything they have ever known or imagined. Immense, ornate structures of black stone veined with silver and lifelike stone statues line the silent, eerily empty streets. Yet what are the whispers they hear, the shadows of voices and bursts of light that flutter and are gone? And why do they feel as if eyes are watching them? The dragons must plumb the depths of their ancestral memories to help them take flight and unlock the secrets buried in Kelsingra. But enemies driven by greed and dark desires are approaching. Time is running out, not only for the dragons but for their human keepers as well.

Igor wasn‘t quite ready to pose this morning. 🥱

I loved some parts of this third in the series, but it felt more scattered than the previous books as it bounced between characters. I‘m enjoying both the dragons and the handlers maturing, and the bits of the past they glimpse.

Book 4, the final in this series, is in my near future.

#doublespin #serieslove2023

coffeenebula I‘m on book 3 as well! It‘s a lot more meandering than her other series, but I‘m enjoying it a lot. 14mo

Rainier cherries are not only the sweetest and juiciest cherries - they're the prettiest too! 😍🍒💛 I almost burst into tears when I saw them at the grocery store yesterday, I was so happy! Cherries are my favorite fruit! Having a bowl of them while reading about dragons before heading in to work today! Happy Sunday, littens! 💕📚

Chelsea.Poole I love cherries too! These look so pretty 🍒 2y

Excellent as usual. The City of Dragons is found in ruins. But, will it awake for the dragons? Meanwhile, once they learn of it, the traders will hurry to pull it to pieces to sell off everything. How to stop them...

Hobb is so very good at mixing plot lines and creating such complex characters.

Robin Hobb writes characters so well that I can sincerely say that I hope Hest gets eaten by a dragon in the next book. Preferably by Relpda, Sedric‘s dragon. That would do nicely, thanks 😆

I‘m flying through the Hobb books at the moment, and I‘m really enjoying myself. Even though this third book in the series wasn‘t as strong as the first two (a bit repetitive and superficial, and it felt like a filler), I really like how Hobb adds layers and layers to her stories even if they “only” are fantasy novels.

BarbaraBB You‘re on a roll! I hope the fourth part will live up to your expectations again😘 6y

I struggled with the end of this book, the 3rd in the 4 books that make up Hobb's Rain Wild Chronicles. Part of that struggle is a result of the complexity of the series. There are so many characters at this point, but to switch POV every 5 or so paragraphs felt too hectic. I also was too busy (Thanksgiving) to give it any amount of time, and I am always happier when I can spend significant time with my characters. Still I enjoyed the beginning.👍

Our Thanksgiving Feast (all vegan). Dinner eaten, food put away, dishes done, seconds consumed. Hubby's watching football, and I'm about to settle in with my book. We are grateful for everything.
I hope all the Littens have had a wonderful day too, no matter what you all were doing.

A perfect evening. I'm mindlessly knitting stockinette while hanging with the girly and reading about dragons. 🐲
Now if only someone would start the Thanksgiving prep!

booklover76 You can knit and read?? I haven't mastered that trick yet!!! 😮 7y
SandyW @booklover76 I am a multi-talented woman! 😝 Seriously, it took lots of practice, and if the story gets too involved, I usually wind up having to frog a bit! 7y
julesG That's so me. I can knit stocking/stockinette or garter while reading but prefer #audioknitting. 😉 7y

Tagged by @BarbaraTheBibliophage to do a grey book stack! Found this quite hard, thought I would have more than this. Only one book on this pile I haven't read and that's the Terry Brooks. Love his stuff, just never got round to reading this mammoth as it's 3 books in one volume!

I'm a bit over this series, but I'll still read the final book. The writing is just so repetitive and people are just too black or white evil/good that it isn't very interesting to read about them...

AlaMich I'm disappointed to hear that. I've been looking forward to these, having read so many of her other trilogies. 7y
tricours @AlaMich you'll like this one too, I'm just being critical 7y

When I do my nails I can only read on my Kindle, or else I'm sure to mess up the nail polish. Fortunately, this book FINALLY got interesting. It sure took a while. I'm a bit fed up with all the relationship tenderness in these books. Just skip that and get back to the story.

WordWaller Haha this is why I don't do my nails. It takes way too long and I can't read for an hour or so afterward!! 8y

I really liked this one. The story expands beyond just the dragons and their keepers, but still remains focused on the relationships between these characters. I'm looking forward to reading the last book in this series soon.

I loved this third book of the Rainwild Chronicles. Book two had a bit of a slow patch but this one really made up for that! I finished it in about three hours and I now can't wait to get home and read the last book of the series. Hobb always amazes me with her wide variety of characters and it seems like we have another strong female character to look forward to in book four! 🌟🌟🌟 🌟

tricours I haven't read Hobb since I was 15, but back then I loved her books. I'm a bit afraid to try them again now though... have you read all her books? I've only read the Assassin and Farseer (if that's correct) trilogies. 8y
Moray_Reads I have those exact tea light holders! 8y
I-read-and-eat @tricours I have read most of her books by now. I was a little late to the party, started reading then at 21 and was sceptical at first but I love them all! So if I were you I'd pick then up again. Although I would skip the Soldier's Son trilogy, I bailed on that one. But they don't tie in with the rest of the stories anyway. 8y
I-read-and-eat @Moray_Reads You've got great taste 😉 Got them at Sostrene Grene a few days ago, I love that store 😊 8y

Just finished setting up the christmas tree. Which is quite a trial ever year as we have no car and transport it by bike, we get a lot of funny looks when we do that 😂 And I am slightly allergic to christmas trees and after decorating my hands are all itchy and red. But I love christmas so much that I look forward to this whole ordeal every year 😊 Time to curl up on the couch with a fresh Robin Hobb book 🎄

Suzze I am sure I've never seen a Christmas tree on a bicycle. Sounds difficult. It looks beautiful. 8y
Iamlisa22 It was worth the effort ! Beautiful 8y
Kalalalatja I can only imagine how difficult it most be to drive a bile with a Christmas tree 😄 but it looks lovely! 8y

Hooked_on_books I'm imaging the transport by bike. 🚲🌲😂 You could always wear gloves when you decorate to minimize direct skin contact. 8y
Tsubame Ahahahaha!! That reminds me of the times when I was doing the same kind of stuff and actually still do, because I have no car! But no Christmas trees in Japan, so can't pull that one off 😁🎄❤️ Your tree looks lovely! 8y
DebinHawaii Gorgeous!!! 🎄❤️ 8y
I-read-and-eat @Suzze @Iamlisa22 @Kalalalatja @LeahBergen @DebinHawaii @Tsubame Thanks guys 😊 ❤ Being Dutch probably gives me the advantage of cycling ever since I was little. We transport everything and anything by bike 😂 @Hooked_on_books That's a great idea! I always think of that when my hands are already itchy ... Might put a pair of gloves in the decoration box to remind me to use them next year 😊 8y
juliannebenford My sister saw someone with a Christmas tree on the London Underground, it's got to be easier to transport it by bike 😅 8y

The dragons have settled but now must be true dragons and learn to fly. This book made me really want to keep reading the series. The social pecking order of the dragons, the fate and foibles of Hest Finbok, the goings-on of Selden, and the politics of the Duke of Chalced are new additions.

Nearly done with this one. Loving the series with its social commentary under the guise of dragons, Elderlings, and those touched by the Rain Wilds. Rich v poor, marked v "normal," and the morality of wizardwood.
