The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror
The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror | Joyce Oates
From one of our most important contemporary writers, The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror is a bold, haunting collection of six stories. In the title story, a young boy becomes obsessed with his cousins doll after she tragically passes away from leukemia. As he grows older, he begins to collect found dolls from the surrounding neighborhoods and stores his treasures in the abandoned carriage house on his family's estate. But just what kind of dolls are they? In Gun Accident, a teenage girl is thrilled when her favorite teacher asks her to house-sit, even on short notice. But when an intruder forces his way into the house while the girl is there, the fate of more than one life is changed forever. In Equatorial, set in the exotic Galapagos, an affluent American wife experiences disorienting assaults upon her sense of who her charismatic husband really is, and what his plans may be for her. In The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror, Joyce Carol Oates evokes the fascination of the abomination that is at the core of the most profound, the most unsettling, and the most memorable of dark mystery fiction.

In the title story, “Soldier” (white guy murders a black teen in “self-defense” & becomes a villain/hero to a divided America), & “Big Momma” (young girl is groomed by an unusual, cultish family), JCO‘s gift for unnerving readers shines. Unfortunately, they are nearly lost in the voluminous page count taken up by the other 3 stories that are too long & vague. Was she paid by the word? If they didn‘t have her name, would they be published?

Cathythoughts Great picture 👍🏻😬 what is it about dolls ?!!! 4y
Michael_Gee @Cathythoughts It‘s gotta be the eyes! 👀 Haha! 4y
Reggie I always hear her name in lists but when I get to the actual reviews they‘re always pans and sosos. Sigh. 4y

Centique @Reggie I‘ve only read one but it was both a( beautifully written and b) made me so hugely mad at most of the characters that I‘ll remember it forever. I get why a lot of people panned it but man you could talk about it in a book group for hours 4y
Centique Awesome photo Michael! Do you have to live in the same house as those scary creatures?!!! 😳😳😳 4y
Reggie @Centique you have piqued my curiosity. There‘s someone in the earlier reviews saying she wants to punch some of the characters and Cathythoughts ❤️ saying she is in such a fury reading it she might not sleep that night. Lolol stacked for sure. 4y
Centique @Reggie 😂😂😂 4y
Michael_Gee @Centique I GET to! Lol! These are few of the whole dolls we have. More are in parts in plant pots or made into wind chimes or centerpieces of our bird bath....They started off as Halloween decorations and then stayed. 4y
Michael_Gee @Centique Someone at our bookclub recommended the Mulvaneys! @Reggie I found Zombie really disturbing and that has stuck with me (inspired by Jeffrey Dahmer). I would recommend that one, though it is truly horrifying, not a “fun” horror story. 4y
Centique @GhostStories that is very cool! I would definitely be keen to have a few porcelain heads around. Somehow I feel safe if they don‘t have legs 😂😂 I had my grandma‘s handmade fabric doll given to me as a child when she died and I was sure that thing walked the house when we were asleep 😂😂 4y
Nute That a really awesome photo. I wonder why dolls only look cool and friendly when they‘re your dolls? When they belong to someone else...ooh, scary!😬 4y
Michael_Gee @Nute Haha! Yes, I agree. It‘s the familiarity. We trust the glassy eyes we‘re used to seeing (but should we?). 4y

Yeah this was a big waste of time for me. It‘s almost kind of offensive it‘s in the horror genre and that the title implies terror. I scare easy and most of this was boring as hell. And not horror or creepy. Except the first story.

Decided to do a kindle book next instead of one of the many library books I need to attend to 😬🤷🏻‍♀️ first story was already a wild ride.

Starting this month of with this one. Hope it lives up to its hype. Picked it up one day for a good price. I hate reading on this thing but too many books come up for a better price. Sometimes I cave and pick them up.

I really enjoyed this book. Admittedly, the stories are more eerie and creepy tales of psychological horror rather than full on tales of terror, but there is only one boring short story of the bunch (Solider). The rest were very enjoyable. Notable standouts include: The Doll-Master, Equatorial and Mystery, Inc. If you were a fan of The Grip Of It by Jac Jemc, this collection is for you!

Michael_Gee I love the Grip of It!! 4y

The Christmas decorations may be up, but I am still in a horror frame of mind with my current read, The Doll-Master by Joyce Carol Oates. This is my first Oates read and despite what many of the reviews say, at least the first story in this collection was creepy and unsettling! #NeverendingOctober #HorrorIsMyNewFavouriteGenre

Ok these are more scary stories that showcase the depravity of the human heart. People trying to kill their wives. A bookstore killer who goes after his competitors. But they aren't so full of mystery and twists that you can't see them coming. No Shirley Jackson or Ray Bradbury, but not terrible.

Though I agree with other reviewers that the promise "tales of terror" seems a stretch (a better description: deeply, deeply troubling), these open-ended stories left me with the angst that these psychologically messed-up characters (or others like them) are still in the world at large. And THAT is terrifying! Meanwhile, Hazel Kitty enjoyed this book for its firm comfort. ??

The irony of reading horror at a playground is not lost on me but we couldn't resist taking advantage of the last few sunny days of October.

Can anyone recommend a November daily Litsy challenge? My early New Years resolution is to post here more often and I'm looking for an excuse!

Happy weekend reading!

Arcana @TizJ3ss and @RealLifeReading both have November daily challenges you might want to look at. I believe @LibrarianRyan has one as well. Enjoy! 8y
MrsReads1 @Arcana Thank you! :-) 8y
Arcana You're welcome! 8y
LibrarianRyan @Arcana thanks. But my next challenge will be in December for 12 Days of Christmas. The others are a blast though. Plus it might take me that long to get my prizes out. 8y

Joyce Carol Oates's writing is great but this one stretched the definition of terror. That's not a bad thing, but I will hoping for spooky whereas most of these were more subtle.

I'm halfway through these "bedtime stories." They are not traditionally creepy...and she likes to throw in some political twists. All of the ones I read could have really happened. So not mind melting...I hope it gets scarier soon...I want to be frightened out of my wits.

Texreader Not so much on the terror eh? That's interesting since the cover suggests a very dark set of stories. The title "Tales of Terror" also would lead you to believe you'll be terrified. I hope it improves for you. 8y
CJEskriett Yes I am halfway through this too, borrowed it from library thinking it would spook me out for Halloween but no such luck so far. I like her writing a lot but "terror" is not used in the obvious sense here, it turns out. 8y

These stories are pissing me off. I dont want to "guess" the ending because i literally cant. By the second "what the hell just happened" i gave up. Nothing about these stories are scary. This book just isnt what i thought it would be.

Nebklvr I like real endings...if i have to make up an ending, i'll just make up my own story.... 8y

A great collection of weird and twisty tales. I loved the ambiguity that Oates weaves into each one, leaving certain details open to a reader's interpretation. There's more than one great story here, but my absolute favorite was "Mystery, Inc." I took the long route to work this morning just so I could keep reading and turn those last few pages!

Great collection of spooky short stories. Each ending is non-conclusive, but the reader can assume what happens to the characters, which I enjoyed. I was left with more questions than answers, but I'm okay with this! Love having the option to interpret and speculate my own way.
