Tsukiko is in her late thirties and living alone when one night she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, Sensei, in a bar. A slightly bittersweet story of companionship and love. Written in the quirky, quiet style that I love about Japanese fiction. Great descriptions of food and lots of great non sequiturs and frank dialogue. And a lovely story as well. I really enjoyed it. Book 2 for #10BeforeTheEnd.

Got to 70%. I guess, with such a short book, I could have carried on but, you know what, I just didn‘t care. Across 3 pages in this dull romance, a scene was, I think, set on a beach, then suddenly they were in a room. I either missed the transition because I was bored or it went surreal. That made me think it was going to be “all a dream” or the narrator is in a coma or some such rubbish. If it‘s neither, I predict the novel fizzles out.

suvata I‘m sorry it wasn‘t a good book for you, because I absolutely adored it. To each his own. 7mo
The_Book_Ninja @suvata I think I‘m in the minority. It started intriguingly but It didn‘t hold. I‘m happy you enjoyed it though. I‘m not immune to romance, I just didn‘t think it was that special. 7mo

This was my pick for author from Japan for my IRL book club for November. I loved it. A former student, 37 years old now, runs into her teacher and companionship and love blossoms between them. This was just such a quiet and lovely read.

That‘s a wrap for November reviews. 🙂

Megabooks Agree! This was lovely. 11mo
Reggie One of my top ten book since I started reading again back in 2016. Such a gentle rainstorm of a book. It had its funny moments too. I love it. Great review. 11mo
batsy This is one of my favourites! I agree with @Reggie it ranks as one of my top reads. I picked it up a long time ago (in the UK version published as The Briefcase) and didn't know what I was in for and found it totally moving and different from my usual type of books 💜 11mo

At times, I thought the relationship between Tsukiko and Sensei was one sided (Tsukiko putting in most of the effort). I very much enjoyed this placid novel, and enjoyed the quirky relationship between the unlikely couple. I really loved the vivid imagery the chapters set (reading about foraging mushrooms in the mountains was such a delight). Would recommend 👍🏼

So there's an exception: I don't like Japanese contemporary romance. (But I do like romance in my manga.)
Maybe it's the translation but I also didn't like the writing style. It's a short book but I had a hard time getting into it. The long chapters didn't help.
This was a little funny, though—that, I liked.

IuliaC Funny and a bit unusual, maybe it's because of the translation as you said 2y

I, on the other hand, still might not be considered a proper grown-up. I had been very much the adult when I was in elementary school. But as I continued on through junior high and high school, on the contrary, I became less grown-up. And then as the years passed, I turned into quite a childlike person. I suppose I just wasn‘t able to ally myself with time.

A will they or won't they tale of an ex student and her teacher (sensei).

I found myself not really caring whether they got together or not.

I also found myself picturing Martin Kove from Karate Kid as the teacher (the only sensei I know) 😄

In the end, a forgettable book.

It was an interesting quick read, a little quirky love story between Tsukiko and her former Sensei. I read it in a day and I enjoyed the writing style. I'm sometimes can't quite 'get in' to some Japanese authors English works, even though it's fine in the original. I would like to read more by Kawakami-san.

I‘ve been in reading slump for quite a while, so I picked up this short novel in hopes that I‘d actually finish it. It was a great choice. Not a typical love story but I enjoyed how their relationship developed. Now, I want to try to make the yudofu that was mentioned so many times.

This one was a short, strange and quirky read.

Took me three days to read it though because my last read made me slumpy!!

I liked it though, there isn't much of a plot going on though but the characterization is very good and they were likeable characters at that!

“Would you consider a relationship with me, based on a premise of love?” May/December romance between two awkward people. This is my third translated Japanese novel, to date, and I find them so calming and unassuming.
I kept craving Japanese food bc they talk about food a lot, so yesterday I got Tofu teriyaki and lemon avocado rolls. I needed the total experience. #Japan

JanuarieTimewalker13 2020 Book 30 4y
Reggie This was one of my favorite books from last year. I say it‘s the most gentle rainstorm of a book you‘ll ever read. It was also funnier than I thought it was gonna be. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Reggie “gentle rainstorm” is a perfect description!! I think I missed the humor, somehow. Was it supposed to be satirical? I thought they drank A LOT. Like to an extreme, but I‘m pretty much a teetotaler except for my annual whiskey sour. Lol 4y
See All 8 Comments
Reggie @JanuarieTimewalker13 Not satirical, but when they‘re on the island and she‘s shouting at him but he can‘t hear her because there is a flock of seagulls so loud. Or when she‘s talking to the bartender after he‘s asked her about knowing if the sensei is sick. But there is a cricket chirping the whole time throughout their conversation. Or the end when he asks the question you quoted above but there is a kid in the square being attacked by birds 4y
Reggie Because he won‘t stop throwing popcorn at them. I thought it was all amusing. 4y
Reggie very cute book. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Reggie Wow!! Am I daft!!! That went completely over my head. Now I wish I still had the book to review that area but I returned it to library!! (edited) 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Reggie They just kept missing each other. I‘ve seen couples in action like that. The guy will go to put an arm around the girl and at that time she moves away, oblivious to the loving gesture. They just miss the tender interactions by a second. Not with noise, however. Other distractions. Or one is looking at the other and just as the other moves toward them, they look away. 4y
