Such a Fun Age | KILEY. REID
'Kiley Reid is the writer we need now' CHLOE BENJAMIN, AUTHOR OF THE IMMORTALISTSWhat happens when you do the right thing for the wrong reason? Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living showing other women how to do the same. A mother to two small girls, she started out as a blogger and has quickly built herself into a confidence-driven brand. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains' toddler one night. Seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, a security guard at their local high-end supermarket accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make it right. But Emira herself is aimless, broke and wary of Alix's desire to help. At twenty-five, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix's past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other. With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the awkwardness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone 'family', the complicated reality of being a grown-up and the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

Perfectly fitting for this moment in time when race, class, expectations, location, attire, position, and technology can mix to create a perfect storm. The audio version of this title is superb, the inflection is spot on and helped me navigate some dialog that I may have read to myself as serious but was rather sarcastic was easily discernable thanks to the narrator.

Great audio for this one as the narrator really made the characters come alive. I was surprised that the book didn't predominantly center around the video, but it provided a lot of interesting social commentary on white savior complexes. I was a bit disappointed by the ending as it felt rushed and there were some jarring character changes. Overall an entertaining read.

We currently have a paralyzed puppy. She‘s being treated at The University of Missouri because Iowa State doesn‘t have a neurology department. It‘s a 5 hour drive from our house - so yesterday we spent 10 hours in the car to snuggle her for 45 minutes. 😩 Thankfully, I had Kiley Reid to keep me company. This fantastic novel sucks you in halfway and you must finish it immediately. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Let‘s just pretend that I got my ARC of this book read before it came out, and not nearly 2 months after, ok?

I‘m impressed by how light and funny this book is, considering it deals with heavy topics (race, privilege, class, relationships). The writing is solid and the story is engaging. I struggled to figure out my thoughts about some characters, but loved Emira and her relationship with Briar. 💕

Also, the ending is perfection.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished this one in the silence of a household still fast asleep with a cuppa at my side - love an early weekend morning! Also love this book!! What a great read - the characters were so well written and there was so much love in the story but played out so differently between each of the characters. I would definitely read whatever Reid writes next.

This is a very intelligent first novel. Kiley Reid wrote this in a café in Arkansas and at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. It is about Emira, a 25 yo Afro-American woman who works part-time as a babysitter for the rich white Chamberlain family in Philadelphia. Emira will soon drop out of her parents' health insurance

This is not as groundbreaking as I thought it would be. As soon as Alex's past catchest up with her in the form of her ex high school boyfriend, the story gets weird real quickly. Whatever message the author is trying to convey did not reach me at all. Since I didn't bail on the book, I will just give it 3/5 stars.

Cathythoughts I thought it was really good ... but I had no expectations.. 👍🏻 6d

3.5 ⭐️- Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid is Reese Witherspoon‘s book picks for her popular book club. It addresses several timely and important issues such as class, race and privilege making it a great pick for a buddy or book club read.

I liked but didn‘t quite love the book. I loved the issues raised and the POVS but felt the characters needed a bit of work.

I went in skeptical because of the hype but it definitely makes you think, and I agree with the reviews that mention it making a thought provoking book club selection. A little cringey in very intentional ways, it gives a bit of a contemporary "The Help" vibe while exploring the added complexities of woke "white saviours", well intentioned or not. I didn't love the turn one character took at the end, but overall a solid Reese pick in my book!

Such a Fun Age is:

•A warning against self-righteousness
•A warning against talking rather than listening
•A warning against co-opting another person‘s story
•A biting commentary upon the importance of consent

— with fully-developed characters (including one of the most convincingly-rendered child characters I‘ve ever encountered), & a dose of raw, hard humor. Prepare to feel needfully discomfited.

This was a much lighter read than what I was anticipating but I finished it a week ago and I can‘t stop thinking about it. I do think it was somewhat mis-marketed because the video is sort of a “looming in the background” plot point rather than the central driver of the story. But I think Kiley has a very fresh, incisive voice and I look forward to reading her again. 4⭐️

Me: I‘m going to curb my book buying habit in 2020.

Also me: Let me show you the 20+ books I‘ve accumulated since 2020 began.

https://youtu.be/NMG-PcVTOb4

#bookhaul #bookstacks #somanybooks #bookhoarder #bookaddiction #bookshopping #booklove #booktube

EadieB @Butterflyamore My book haul since January has been mostly audios which I am listening to while I decide what books in my library to get rid of. I use my credits from paperbackswap and have ordered The Couple Next Door, Racing In The Rain and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and have enjoyed them all. I have now sent out over 150 books to people on paperbackswap so I will continue to get rid of them until my books are more manageable. (edited) 2w
EadieB @Butterflyamore From your list, I have read all of Tana French's books and have enjoyed them very much. One thing about her writing is that she is very talented but very wordy. I just wanted to warn you about that because her books are not easy reads but the murders are interesting so you get good with the bad. I have also read a few books by Simone St. James and have enjoyed them all. I own about 8 books by Alice Hoffman and need to read them. 2w
EadieB @Butterflyamore I've read The Hiding Place and The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor and do want to read more of her books. I own some books by Joe Hill and need to read those too. I think I need to put Riley Sager on my list to read soon too as I have heard a lot about his books. All in all, I would say that your book haul was very successful and they all look pretty good! Hope you enjoy them! (edited) 2w

I enjoyed this - yes it was light, soap opera like, at times, fluffy & young - but also nuanced, clever, menacing & awkward. As a white woman it made me squirm & reflect on language & preconceptions. A few convenient coincidences - but the pace is relentless & Briar is possibly the most engaging, wonderful toddler I've ever met! It's book about race - but equally it's a book about motherhood, materialism, friendship, money & class.

Linsy Agreed! I think that's a perfect way to describe it. I felt for Briar at the end thought! 2w

This book clearly wants readers to confront stereotypes about race & class, to examine themselves & attitudes about others. In fact, that‘s the best thing about it—that it asks big questions. Unfortunately, the story itself is rife with stereotypes, populated by cliched characters, and, ultimately, unbelievable. It doesn‘t help that the book can‘t decide if it wants to be a thriller or social commentary. #unpopularopinion but I didn‘t like it

Panic70 I bailed too. The storyline changes fairly early and if I mention what I didn‘t like, it‘s a spoiler. I feel like it makes it harder to give it a negative review. 😂 That‘s one way to keep getting only good reviews. 3w
