Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk: A Novel | Ben Fountain
A finalist for the National Book Award!A ferocious firefight with Iraqi insurgents at "the battle of Al-Ansakar Canal"three minutes and forty-three seconds of intense warfare caught on tape by an embedded Fox News crewhas transformed the eight surviving men of Bravo Squad into America's most sought-after heroes. For the past two weeks, the Bush administration has sent them on a media-intensive nationwide Victory Tour to reinvigorate public support for the war. Now, on this chilly and rainy Thanksgiving, the Bravos are guests of America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys, slated to be part of the halftime show alongside the superstar pop group Destiny's Child.Among the Bravos is the Silver Starwinning hero of Al-Ansakar Canal, Specialist William Lynn, a nineteen-year-old Texas native. Amid clamoring patriots sporting flag pins on their lapels and Support Our Troops bumper stickers on their cars, the Bravos are thrust into the company of the Cowboys' hard-nosed businessman/owner and his coterie of wealthy colleagues; a luscious born-again Cowboys cheerleader; a veteran Hollywood producer; and supersized pro players eager for a vicarious taste of war. Among these faces Billy sees those of his familyhis worried sisters and broken fatherand Shroom, the philosophical sergeant who opened Billy's mind and died in his arms at Al-Ansakar.Over the course of this day, Billy will begin to understand difficult truths about himself, his country, his struggling family, and his brothers-in-armssoldiers both dead and alive. In the final few hours before returning to Iraq, Billy will drink and brawl, yearn for home and mourn those missing, face a heart-wrenching decision, and discover pure love and a bitter wisdom far beyond his years.Poignant, riotously funny, and exquisitely heartbreaking, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk is a devastating portrait of our time, a searing and powerful novel that cements Ben Fountain's reputation as one of the finest writers of his generation.

#SummerEndReadathon These are my goals for the month on top of finishing my current reads and my stack of audio books in Libby. I know September is technically still summer but to me it is the kick off of autumn.Autumn reading to me has me immersed in stories of school, fairy tales and food. So a few of those had made the list.

For a book where nothing really HAPPENS, this was decent. Lots of long, run-on sentences, but an interesting portrayal of soldiers and the America they leave behind when they go to war.

It was ok.
I read this because so many reviewers I trust said this book is amazing.
It‘s a commentary on the war and disillusionment, class discrimination, and misplaced priorities. I just expected something to happen, something surprising or shocking, but nothing did. I guess that makes it more realistic but not necessarily engrossing reading.

#Booked2019 #Autumn #SoldiersStory

*This book is one I was absolutely not looking forward to reading. On the recommendation of a great friend, I decided to give it a go. This book is utterly fantastic. It is an older book (2012), so I‘m sure loads of Littens have already read it, so I‘ll make it brief. Three points: a) Fountain has his thumb firmly on the pulse of American culture; b) he is a wordsmith of the highest caliber—I learned ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont.) several new ones; c) he is writing about a particular American city (Dallas) where I lived for about a decade, and he was so spot-on that I cringed internally at certain scenes—they were too (unfortunately) familiar. All the action takes place in a day (although some of Billy‘s thoughts are of past events) and this just heightens the “you are here” ambience of the book. I loved it. ♥️ (edited) 5y
Theaelizabet I loved this book for all the reasons you give and certainly meant to read more by him, which I didn‘t. I need to cycle back around to him. 5y
CarolynM I'm sold. Stacked🙂 5y

gradcat @Theaelizabet You know, I checked into his other books, precisely because I found him so good. He seems to publish a book every six years. The first, “Brief Encounters with Che Guevara” (2006), is short stories, albeit loosely connected ones, and the one he published last year (tagged) is nonfiction. Since I fell in love with his long-form fiction, I haven‘t raced out to buy these, but you know, they‘re probably good. I should try them. ♥️ 5y
gradcat @CarolynM I think you‘ll be surprised at how fast you get through it—it absolutely flows! ♥️ 5y
Cinfhen I tried this book when it was first released and I couldn‘t get into it. I had bailed early on but your review makes me want to try again 😊 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen At the risk of repeating myself, I was REALLY not looking forward to it. And that‘s what I like about #Booked2019 ... I loved this book, and would never have read it if it wasn‘t for Litsy. I think I read this book in about two days, and I don‘t read very fast anymore. It just held my attention so well—almost accidentally, I think—strictly owing to those three reasons I wrote about in my review. If you do try it again, I hope you like it. 5y

Back on Litsy after a long hiatus not because I‘ve forgotten about it, but simply because I haven‘t finished a book in a while (I redirected most of my free time to Scrabble stuff for the last few months). Ready to get back on my reading grind. I really enjoyed this book, which manages to be about war despite almost no scenes of combat - it‘s more about perception vs. reality with respect to the lives of modern soldiers.

My month in books --
As for being the "Catch 22 of the Iraq War" - I wouldn't go that far, but it was a blistering commentary on the war, politics, corporate money, pro-sports, and much more. Worth the read.

Trying to listen to this one while I work today, but I'm struggling. I feel like I'm overhearing high school boy conversations. Is the whole book like this? I may actually have to bail on this one. Anyone have some praise to share that may make me stick with it?

ReadingEnvy I think it really gets into the mind of people coming home from war. And I think the author is proving a point - soldiers are KIDS. 7y
Bookzombie I agree with @ReadingEnvy 'a comment. I read this in book form and was rather surprised I liked it so much. I can see that listening to it might make it less appealing though. 7y
goodbyefrancie @ReadingEnvy @Bookzombie I'm sticking with it for now. If nothing else, I'll try reading it instead of listening. The story interests me enough to give it a good shot. Thanks! 7y

I recently finished Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. The writer does a superb job of honoring the sacrifice of soldiers while criticizing the vulgar, ignorant, shallow, war-mongering American public that sends kids to die in meaningless wars. It's funny, creative, and insightful.

Engaging: 4/5 stars

Blegh. Wanted to like it, but after so many pages of being in an aimless macho teenager's head, I couldn't take it anymore. I appreciate what the author was going for, and bravo for taking risks, but it wasn't for me. I'd like to see the movie though.

Zelma @Smrloomis @vivastory the book is fantastic but I heard the movie is a mess. 8y
vivastory @zelma @Smrloomis that's usually how it goes. 95% of the time.. really 98% the book is better 8y
Smrloomis @vivastory @Zelma that's true but I thought this book & movie pair looked especially terrible. I loved the main character in the book; I'm not sure I could bear to see him ruined in a movie that didn't address his disappointment and ridicule of American culture. At least that's the way I read it. 8y
LornaDH I love this book. Still trying to get my husband to read it. 8y
Smrloomis @LornaDH ditto! For some reason, mine hasn't finished it. Not sure why. 8y
Zelma @Smrloomis @vivastory the book was my absolutely favorite read last year so I was wary of the movie already. Then one of my podcasts mentioned how terrible it was, complete with shaky cam to get the chaotic feeling across, so I knew I had to skip it. Plus movies don't always get satire just right and that is key for this one. 8y
Smrloomis @Zelma when I put "ridicule" above that's not quite right I think. But I did love the main character and think the movie would probably not work for me either. 8y

Superb, and heartbreaking. The terrible contrast between the hyped up life in America and what the troops abroad, and their families, are actually going through is portrayed in a way that really hits you in the gut.

#photoadaynov16 Day 23 I didn't really expect to like this book as much as I did. It's set almost entirely at a Dallas Cowboys football game and I'm not much of a sports person. Billy Lynn sticks with you. His visit home is only a very small portion of this book, but it's enough to know his family is dysfunctional. #dysfunctionalfamily

I read this book as part of the book club at my local indie. As one of my fellow readers noted, this book did not "have" to be written. A great satire of American culture and the Iraq war, but not anything ground-breaking. I did appreciate the accurate depiction of these war heroes, who are really just young guys who were thrown into a war and are now just trying to get by.

So...1/4 in and I'm paying bills instead. What does that tell u?

I tried hard to like it. I really did. But there seems to be a windowless iron door between myself and the characters. Narration is pretty much "Detached Observer" and its painful people!!

Pain. Dead. GAH!

So the glorious full review I'd planned is dead. Beaten with the same heavy cudgel Ben Fountain is using to drive his social commentary home in this book. ?

For today's #AugustPhotoChallenge , I present a riff on the impulse buy! I impulsively bought each one of these at one time or another, but I have yet to read them. I was planning on working in the Wonderbook today, but while going through my shelves, I impulsively pulled down the other two to add to my TBR. (For September, probably.)

GinaAnderson I bought The Once and Future King on impulse too! Still on the TBR shelf. One day, though. One day... 8y

Fantastic satire of the war on terror, American patriotism and culture, the super wealthy, football, the military... A bit more introspective than I expected for a satire but it really worked overall. Billy Lynn was a great character that will stay with me for awhile. Not a quick read even though it isn't very long; the writing is excellent and slowed down my reading to appreciate it more.

Fountain creates that narrative that feels like you're hearing a story from a batto, but doesn't fall into jargon-world, which is a great balance to achieve for a military writer. It shows he did his army-isms research, oftentimes that crucial niche lacking for writers without an OD background.
