The Forager's Calendar
The Forager's Calendar: A Seasonal Guide to Natures Wild Harvests | John Wright
13 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
'He writes so engagingly that it's hard to imagine that actual foraging can be more attractive than reading his accounts of it. ...[This book] is a treasure. It is beautifully produced, designed and illustrated.' - John Carey, The Sunday Times Look out of your window, walk down a country path or go to the beach in Great Britain, and you are sure to see many wild species that you can take home and eat. From dandelions in spring to sloe berries in autumn, via wild garlic, samphire, chanterelles and even grasshoppers, our countryside is full of edible delights in any season. John Wright is the country's foremost expert in foraging and brings decades of experience, including as forager at the River Cottage, to this seasonal guide. Month by month, he shows us what species can be found and where, how to identify them, and how to store, use and cook them. You'll learn the stories behind the Latin names, the best way to tap a Birch tree, and how to fry an ant, make rosehip syrup and cook a hop omelette. Fully illustrated throughout, with tips on kit, conservation advice and what to avoid, this is an indispensable guide for everyone interested in wild food, whether you want to explore the great outdoors, or are happiest foraging from your armchair.

It‘s wild garlic season - and the woods behind our house are brimming with the stuff! Had a go at making wild garlic salt - just waiting for it to cool down, then jar it and have it on hand to season scrambled eggs, pasta, steak… anything you want a strong garlic shot of!

dabbe Too cool for words. ❣️ 2y

I didn‘t strike lucky last month finding elf cups and winter laver - but already hit jackpot for March - we have plenty of dandelions in amongst the hedges! But I‘m going to be on the lookout for some common sorrel and some young cow parsley stems for an early spring salad.

Soubhiville I love sorrel! I tried growing some last year but it didn‘t take. I used to have some wild in Tennessee. Good luck! (edited) 3y
Mitch @Soubhiville were growing some red sorrel in the veg plot - I wonder how different wild sorrel will taste 🤨🤞🏼 3y
StaceGhost That‘s so cool! My partner doesn‘t trust my mushroom foraging but he eats my dandelion flower shortbread! 3y

John Wright doesn‘t seem a fan of February 🤣And it doesn‘t look like a particularly bountiful month for foraging - but I might try to find some Scarlet Elf cups - because who wouldn‘t want those for dinner! 👍🏼

Chrissyreadit Ohh! What is a scarlet elf cup? 3y
Mitch @Chrissyreadit it‘s a little red fungus that looks like a pale pink teacup! Evidently they‘re delicious lightly plant fried with a spoon of pesto inside! Yum! 3y
Chrissyreadit That does sound delicious 😋 3y

I think I‘m going to enjoy the year with John Wright guiding my foraging through the hedgerows. This months his advice is sound - how to get the slimy off Velvet Shank wild mushrooms …. Fry them or simply embrace the slime as a thickening agent! 🤣

Chrissyreadit Have you ever foraged for mushrooms? It‘s common here but I‘m so scared to! 3y
Mitch @Chrissyreadit never! We‘ve walked past amazing ones - convinced they will all kill us! 3y
Chrissyreadit That‘s me too! I‘m going to be really interested as you learn this. 3y

One of my new rituals for 2022 will be to spend the first weekend of every month reading from almanacs and my foraging calendar book - in the hope to be more observant and regain the vocabulary of the rural. Thanks @Chrissyreadit for inspiring me ♥️

I love this book it is a month by month guide (with photos for the newbies like me!) of what to find in the hedgerows and fields to forage - what tastes good and what‘s not worth the hike! Love it.
