Roseanna
Roseanna: A Martin Beck Police Mystery (1) | Maj Sjwall, Per Wahl
The masterful first novel in the Martin Beck series of mysteries by the internationally renowned crime writing duo Maj Sjwall and Per Wahl, finds Beck hunting for the murderer of a lonely traveler. On a July afternoon, a young woman's body is dredged from Sweden's beautiful Lake Vattern. With no clues Beck begins an investigation not only to uncover a murderer but also to discover who the victim was. Three months later, all Beck knows is that her name was Roseanna and that she could have been strangled by any one of eighty-five people on a cruise. As the melancholic Beck narrows the list of suspects, he is drawn increasingly to the enigma of the victim, a free-spirited traveler with a penchant for casual sex, and to the psychopathology of a murderer with a distinctive--indeed, terrifying--sense of propriety.. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This story was of its time. There was casual sexism, misogyny, and racism. The mystery was slow and had a noir feel to it. The characters were not complex and were somewhat unlikable. I won‘t read anymore but the mystery and whodunnit kept me reading when I was contemplating a dnf.

Great start to a series. I can‘t wait to read the rest. Captures the tedium, frustration, and excitement of a criminal investigation. Liked how it also went into Beck‘s relationship with his wife and kids and the toll the job took. Good introduction to Beck and his colleagues.

I have wanted to read this Martín Beck series for ages. One of the first, if not the first, #Nordicnoir series. Was afraid it would be dated. It was written in 1965. It is indeed dated. But, it‘s also those good old days without computers, internet, globalization etc. At one point a detective says that they need to use the jungle drums to get hold of two people on the ship, because they come from South Africa. Lots of old timey things like this.

I don‘t often hunker down in the middle of the day to finish a book but I had to with this one. Pegged as Sweden‘s first police procedural, it was the first in a 10 book series by a husband and wife duo. The writing is very spare and to the point and the ending had my heart pounding. I immediately, upon finishing, ordered the second book in the series.

#pop18 #nordicnoir

TheWordJar I looooved this book! And how exciting is it to have nine more to look forward to?? 6y
Reviewsbylola Have you read any of the others? I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it! @TheWordJar my last attempt at Nordic noir was a huge failure. 6y
LeahBergen This sounds good and the cover‘s great, too. Why is the Litsy rating so low? 🤔 6y

emilyhaldi Well!! Maybe I need to borrow it?? Doesn't sound like my usual cup of tea but if you liked it THAT much... And you know I like the "sparse" writing! 6y
Reviewsbylola I was curious about that too. @LeahBergen 6y
Reviewsbylola Yeah you should borrow. @emilyhaldi 6y
Cathythoughts I loved this series ♥️♥️♥️... 6y
TheWordJar I haven‘t read the others yet. I recommended the second one to my library, so I hope they pick it up. I‘ve tried and failed with several of the Nordic authors too. I do enjoy some of Jussi Adler-Olsen‘s Department Q series. I‘ve tagged my favorite. But I felt the main detective could get a little one-dimensional and quite misogynistic in some of the later ones. However, Assad, the MC‘s “sidekick,” is one of my favorite secondary characters ever. 6y
batsy I loved this! I really should get cracking on the rest of the series. @LeahBergen I don't get it, either... It's a good book... (she said, sadly). 6y

There‘s a lot of #sympathy and a pursuit of justice in this #nordicnoir about a woman found dead in a lake in Sweden. She had been raped and strangled, and her identity is unknown.

This one sounds like a wild ride and I need to read it this month for #pop18

#nofemmeber

Cinfhen Hope it‘s good 6y
Reviewsbylola It‘s doesn‘t have a good Litsy rating and my track record with Nordic noir is 0/1 so far so I have low expectations. This is my last attempt tho. 😂 @Cinfhen 6y
Billypar I haven't read Nordic noir (unless Girl with the Dragon Tattoo counts). I have one on the shelf though- might pick it up this winter on a snowy day for the full effect ☃️ 🕵️⛷️ 6y

Got some #bookmail today!

Roseanna is for the #nordicnoir prompt in #pop18. I‘m hoping it goes better than my original choice, Smilla‘s Sense of Snow. I can‘t remember being so bored by a book in my life.

My second book was sent by @Kappadeemom for #lmpc #groupS. I‘m so excited to read this! And thanks so much for adding the pens Melanie!!

Kappadeemom @Reviewsbylola Lol - the pens were in my package..I wasn‘t sure if they were for me or if they traveled with the book 😂😂 6y

Waiting on my son as he takes his college entrance exam. It's a good time to finish up this #whodunitbymail selection. Enjoying it so far! Love how the authors wrote alternate chapters.
Only little annoyance is you can tell this book was translated, some of the sentences feel fragmented.

I absolutely loved this book! What a great predecessor to the Scandinavian thrillers of today. It might seem a bit slow in places, but I felt that was more a reflection of the time. Life (and crime solving) wasn‘t as fast-paced, lacking today‘s instant communications and advanced forensic techniques. Martin Beck grew on me, and I‘m so excited that I have the rest of the series to look forward to! #whodunitbymail

LoveToReadLiveToRead I love the foxes! Is that a notebook? 🦊 7y
TheWordJar @LoveToReadLiveToRead It is! It‘s not mine, but isn‘t it adorable? It travels with the book, collecting the thoughts of the other #whodunitbymail readers! 7y

#BackToReading ? #BooksAndBooze ?#TheBreakdown & #Roseanna | a young woman is found dead in the Göta Canal, molested and murdered. The case is almost instantly cold: nobody can identify her and where and by whom she was killed. Then a stroke of luck: through Interpol her identity is ascertained; she is Roseanna McGraw, an American tourist who was taking a boat trip in southern Sweden. A meticulous investigation ensues to find out #whodunit ?

I received my first #WhoDunItByMail package today from @EllieDottie and I absolutely love everything about it! I'm very new to sending/receiving #bookmail and this package was so sweet! Not only did she send her WhoDunIt pick #Roseanna and the cute fox journal to pass along, she included thoughtful goodies for me to keep (a cute button and #MagpieMurders from my #TBR list). Thanks so much @EllieDottie 🤗 I'll be starting #Roseanna this week! 😁

britt_brooke Nice! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 @EllieDottie 7y

Jess7 @AmyG I'm excited to read it, but seeing the thickness of it in person and knowing I need to finish my WhoDunItByMail book #Roseanna to pass it on (not to mention library books I need to finish 😳) I doubt I'll start it this month - but I'm very happy to know it's a good read! (edited) 7y

janeycanuck Beautiful cover on Magpie Murders! 7y
EllieDottie I'm so glad you got it and liked everything!! I'm excited to see what you think about Roseanna!! 7y
Jess7 @EllieDottie I started it yesterday at the pool. I made it through the first few chapters. It was written in 1965 and set in Sweden so there are a few hurdles for me to jump through at first just to understand how the police force is set up in terms of who is doing what in the investigation and trying to remember all the Swedish names. I'm going to try to pick up again later this week after work when I can google things to follow along 😜 7y

Even though I was 99.9% sure from the description that my date would be Roseanna, a book I've read before, I selected this one anyway as it was the most interesting pick on the shelf #blinddatewithabook
