Despite the grumpy, rude, bitter protagonist, this is a suspenseful and interesting crime thriller. I plan to read more of this series.

I love the Department Q series from this Danish author. More Scandinavian crime! Each book is always better than the last. Anyway, this first in the series ebook is on sale for $1.99!

This Danish police procedural has a good plot and fun story, but I have a real issue with books that portray women so poorly. The women here are all one-note and portrayed as either crazy, in need of rescue, or sexualized. Plus, there‘s a Muslim character who is portrayed a bit problematically as well, so I just can‘t recommend this one.

Maybe not a 4 star read but a solid 3.5 Nordic noir thriller. It sucked me in. Mixed feelings about the portrayal of the Syrian sidekick, although he turns out to be a badass. Hope his character gets more developed in the next book in the series. Now I will watch the Netflix Dept. Q film!

Took the ‘73 VW Thing to a car show today. While my sweetie peruses vintage cars I plan to sneak away, sit near the lake and read my dark Nordic noir crime novel on the sunny beach!

I‘ve been diving into Nordic Noir and am loving this first book in the Dept. Q series! I‘d already put this author on my list and then my Danish friend and member of my book club recommended it for a group read.

I‘ve been wanting to do the #seriesread2021 this year but I‘ve been struggling with getting back into reading mode much less identifying which series I want to finish. I have so many and the vast majority are unfinished. Today I listed the series from my bookshelf with favorite books. So it‘s missing all my other series on all my other shelves, my ebook series, and my audible series. Hoping listing them will strike a chord to help me pick. ⬇️

I finished this a few days ago. So I guess it's my last book of 2020. I definitely did not need to start another series but I'm totally hooked. This is Nordic Noir set in Denmark. Carl was involved in a police shooting and ends up as head of a new cold case department. The first case is a member of parliament that vanished off a ferry in the Baltic 5 years previously. It is also told from her perspective. It's very good.

Also known as The Keeper of Lost Causes.

First translated book in the series, lots of character introduction. Politician is kidnapped and locked away for years. Great introduction to the series.

A new (to me) Nordic crime series and it did not disappoint. Not as fast-paced as some of the other series (i.e., Lars Kepler) but a great detective story. I really enjoyed the back and forth time lines and Merete's point of view was so well done. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Not sure what to say about this book.Created feelings of gnawing anxiety & dread,yet I read it compulsively.Chilling,full of twists, confrontation of pathological evil- I usually want to escape this reality.But the book‘s eclectic, idiosyncratic,characters,its humorous overtones,its complicated plot,its politics-kept me submerged in its pages.Maybe the contrast of my work(teaching)grounded me?This choice was a stretch for me.I am glad I read it.

Brief respite between work and dinner. Listlessly thinking about reading this book- Sense & Sensibility, other, but still in a slump. I did finish #botmbuddy read, The Sun Down Motel, which is due next Sunday. That was a “creepy, page turner, heart thumping, anxiety producing ride for me.

I am in a book slump. Restless. I have plenty to read but nothing jumps out at me. Starting this but maybe I need something more like an Agatha Christie??? Nothing too creepy, intense, etc. Looking forward to my son‘s reading of Sherlock today. Maybe that‘s enough. Just have not been in this place for ages. 😕

Overall an enjoyable book but not the smoothest translation and therefore not the easiest or quickest read. Enjoyed the interactions between the two lead investigators. Second half better than first half. Hopefully series will improve. Onto book 2 next month.

Copenhagen's PD created a new department called Q in the basement of their building. Carl Morck, a flawed policeman and Assad, immigrant, menial work but intelligence very helpful to Carl. one cold case for Carl. It is a liberal woman politician who has been missing for 5 years. interesting plot but slow moving. very wordy needs better dialogue. Carl and Assad unique. switched to the audio version. I will continue series. recommend 3.5 stars

It may just be me but struggling to get through this book. Currently on 56%. It just feels to be moving quite slowly and not a lot going on. Think the interactions between characters need to be better, a bit more action and some better dialogue sections.

Will get to the questions when I do manage to get through the rest of the book.

The police department in Denmark is forced to establish a new department after a political agreement, Department Q that will handle cold cases of a severe character. To solve internal difficulties within the Copenhagen police department they appoint Carl Mørck as its leader. He in return demands an assistant, and gets Assad. By chance, they start to look into a case where a young female politician disappeared 5yrs ago.

I‘m multitasking with this book as it will also be my second country visited in the #ReadingEurope2020 (#Denmark), The one word book title for January‘s #ReadwithMrBook #OneWordTitle and the first of three books by the same author for the #MMDChallenge.

Book 1 in Dept Q series. Carl Mork is a different type of detective, marches to his own drummer. Assad, his assistant, is a quirky type too, they fit for some reason. Mork is in charge of a 5 year old cold case. Where is the womans body? Lots of twists in the case. 4🌟

I enjoyed the first book in this series. Carl Mørck is some guy. He is now leading the new Department Q, handling cold cases, with one of the most special “Assistants”, Assad. It moves slower than the general detective stories, as it should, due to its nature. MP Merete is believed to have drowned five years back, but is it really the truth? It‘s time to find out! I love the strange characters in the book, and want to get to know them! #nordicnoir

The slow pace of the plot bugged me. A lot. Carl is not a likeable character. Few characters are in this thriller. I kept on reading, a reader I trust wrote a good review, so I persisted. I am glad I did. At around 2/3 the plot picked up, the action got into high gear. The writer does thriller really well, mystery, not so well. #summerreading #readinginFrenchJuly

New summer nails. I just love them. As much As I like the idea of a cold case squad, this cop is an a-hole, sexist and a tad racist. I'm a little pass 50% and I know who did it and why, and I didn't cheat. All that I have left to keep me reading is I want know if she gets out and gets revenge. Still new nails and new books arrived in the mail today. #bookhaul

Finally getting into the last book in this round of our #teaswap I haven‘t read any of the Nordic mysteries that have become so popular, so I‘m interested to give this a go. Also what‘s the Glass Key awarded for?

Okay Littens, a friend of mine, who's bookish but not crazy bookish, keeps raving about the first Jussi Adler-Olsen book. Actually, she keeps saying I absolutely have to read it.

I'm hesitant, as you might have guessed. I am not really into Scandinavian crime/thriller books, and I have tried a few. It's the slow pace that mostly annoys me.

Soooo, the question is, should I or should I not try it?
