Pickpick

We binge watched Derry Girls last week, so I was looking for books set during The Troubles. This one is the first of The Troubles Trilogy and follows Sean Duffy, the only Catholic police officer in a Protestant neighbor, as well as on the force. I really enjoyed it. There was a good amount of dark humor as well as history that was weaved through the story, and I have already downloaded book 2.

gradcat Hiya @EadieB ... I‘m trying very hard to get back into the swing of things...first I was ill, then this hurricane wiped out the internet. This was a good introduction to the series. I loved the first half of the book and enjoyed getting to know this new character, Sean Duffy is certainly an interesting and brave, if foolhardy at times, character. I do however feel the second half didn‘t maintain this standard at times and felt it was treading water at times. That said there was a different ending to the book and I enjoyed the book overall. I look forward to continuing this series.

RealBooks4ever My favorite Irish series!! 💜 6y
Andrew65 @RealBooks4ever I can see why. Think set the scene well in book 1 for the rest of the series. Will be reading book 2 in February. 6y

What did you think? @EadieB @Andrew65

Tove_Reads I enjoyed the book and the setting. I always love to read about the troubles, or similar major cultural/religious problems around the globe. I did not really like Duffy that much, at least I haven‘t warmed up to him yet. There were a few inconsistencies in the book, and for a long time nothing happened. They got nowhere on the case and it just kept on going. Otherwise I really liked it. I‘m sure I‘ll grow into Duffy‘s character (or not 🤣). 6y
Tove_Reads Is it just me, or does it happen quite often in the first book of these mystery series that the main character is quite distance? We know they drink/smoke/do drugs/see a shrink etc., but not much is revealed. I wonder if it‘s because they have planned the series further and want to expand the character or if it‘s because they don‘t know if the series will take off to begin with. @EadieB @Andrew65 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I like Sean. I like that he is the only Catholic cop. That gives interest to his job and I‘m sure he has other secrets to be revealed but the author is saving it for other books. I think she will soften him up as we get to know him better. Basically 1st books are not the best books. They are just for introduction to characters, the history of the area etc. so can tend to be boring in places. In future books, more dialogue.@Andrew65 6y
See All 9 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB I agree with you Eadie, I would have liked more dialogue. I liked the book for the first half (a lot) but it sort of lost the plot in the second half because as @Tove_Reads said it seemed to be treading water and going no where. A bit too much guns, shootings, violence for me but it was clear this was intentional. In the main I liked Sean but zone of his actions I didn‘t like and at the end of the day he murdered someone 👇 6y
Andrew65 Does this make him any better. Will be interested to see how the series goes goes, often the first books aren‘t the best ones. Hopefully book 2 will be more consistent and we‘ll get to know some people better. Jury very much still out. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads I‘m a firm believer the series gets better! What do you think about his relationship with Laura? I think that is going to be a long on and off thing. @EadieB @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads That‘s a strange relationship. A lot of mixed messages going on there, and Laura is in danger by being with him. And that‘s without taking into account the episode in the toilet. @EadieB (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads Yet there‘s something I really loved about it all. So many dark political things and historical figures I recognize. How things were different in the 80s... Politics, the world, no social media. I did react to the statement that 🇬🇧 can‘t leave the EU. @Andrew65 @EadieB 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Democracy in the U.K. seems at risk over Brexit. Talk about a political crisis. 6y

This book takes place in Belfast Northern Ireland in Spring 1981. It‘s a brilliant depiction of Belfast at the height of the Troubles. A serial killer is targeting gay men and Sean McDuffy is the cop caught in the crossfire. It‘s fast-paced, evocative and brutal with quality prose. I learned a lot about the IRA and the hunger strikes. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb For the last few weeks I‘ve pretty much been just sleeping. Turns out I have a severe vitamin d deficiency. Last night I dreamed we had set up a time to discuss Heartstone, but I fell asleep. You were really angry with me because I didn‘t take part in it (because I fell asleep). 😃 I then took part in the heated discussion the following morning, but you wouldn‘t forgive me. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I would forgive you no matter what. I had 1 parathyroid removed because of that same problem - low vitamin d and high calcium levels. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads One of our members of staff has had the same problem over the past few weeks, amazing what that vitamin deficiency causes, at one point we thought she was having a heart attack! I‘m a very forgiving person, and never hold grudges, but why didn‘t you read that book! 😂😂😂 Hopefully now it‘s known about you will start to feel better and more alive. (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Need to figure out all these things for 2019. So, we start with The Cold cold ground. Lamentation 14.1. Echoes 19.1. Whiteout when? Then there‘s subject of the month, century, author of the month. Have I forgotten something? @EadieB 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 Thanks! I would forgive you too! Just got liquid oily D, so hopefully it‘ll get better soon! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Hopefully not, as already a lot there! 😳 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Was you calcium level ok? 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Wasn‘t part of this blood test. I had iron storage deficiency earlier, so iron, d and thyroid were checked. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @EadieB Do we have a plan how to proceed with the crime readings? 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Well if you don‘t feel better soon have the dr check calcium level and pth levels. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Possibly two books a month. Jan from Eadie‘s and your list February from Mine and Eadie‘s, March from Yours and mine and so on. @EadieB (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Just post what to read and then we will be ready! 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb All three series sound so good! Can‘t believe I‘ve never heard of them before. One reason to love Litsy! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Even more amazing is that we found good series none of us have read! @EadieB 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Also interesting is that the series have 7 (Andrew), 6 (Eadie) and 7, 8 in April 2019 (Tove) books. I mean, there were series with over 20 books on the lists. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 We did some good research! 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Woohoo! The first Mo Hayder had gotten lost, but the library got it as an ebook! They have ordered the first Maeve Kerrigan book already in September, but I guess they haven‘t gotten it yet. There‘s something with the first book gone missing in all these mystery series I‘m about to read... 🤔😱😂 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads That‘s interesting! At least they are trying to get your books for you! @Andrew65 (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads To be on the safe side... Because the first Maeve book got lost, and the library had ordered two new ones, and I don‘t know when they‘ll get here, so could we start (as planned) with McKinty and then move on to read the grim book by Mo? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes that‘s no problem. @eadieb (edited) 6y

Doing some audio-puzzling tonight. Listening to Bk1 in Adrian McKintys series about a Catholic policeman in Ulster during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It's hard to do your job when no one trusts you, including your colleagues. I love doing jigsaw puzzles on my iPad, less chance of losing a piece and I don't need a table to spread out on. What's everyone else up to tonight//today? #itsapuzzler

It comes with a basic pack of puzzles but they also have free puzzles in their store regularly, every puzzle you finish earns you coins, the smaller the pieces the more coins, you can use them to buy more puzzles plus you can turn your own photos or even images off the Internet into a puzzle as well. Well worth it in my book. 7y

Mehso-so

Wonderful sense of place - life in early 1980s northern Ireland during the Troubles - & dry sense of humour. It's a hard-boiled crime novel, but the style is too abrupt for me & occasionally clunky. I found Sean Duffy hard to relate to (sexist, or no-nonsense & of his time?) - a so-so read for me. Adrian mckinty is a very funny raconteur though so I wanted to like it more!

Thoroughly enjoying this thriller set in Northern Ireland (even on a 38 degree day)! ☀️

This is the only book list that really counts - well, it's the one with all the books on that I've read this year. Not all of them made it into Litsy (I only joined a while ago) and I forgot to put all of them into Goodreads.
So it's 56 books finished, so far. I haven't counted the abandoned books.

Pickpick

Great detective work in Belfast, 1981. The plot is a bit all over the place but the setting feels authentic and the sectarian tension feels real. I guess McKinty would love to be the Northern Irish Ellroy and that's a perfectly fine ambition. I might pick up the next in the series to see if Duffy's the real deal or derivative bunkum.

Audrey I really enjoy this series. Each book gets better, which is saying a lot since I thought this first one was very good. Plus, they are fairly short so it's not a huge time investment if you don't like it. 8y
