Stargirl. From the day she arrives at quiet Mica High in a burst of color and sound, the hallways hum with the murmur of Stargirl, Stargirl. She captures Leo Borlocks heart with just one smile. She sparks a school-spirit revolution with just one cheer. The students of Mica High are enchanted. At first. Then they turn on her. Stargirl is suddenly shunned for everything that makes her different, and Leo, panicked and desperate with love, urges her to become the very thing that can destroy her: normal. In this celebration of nonconformity, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli weaves a tense, emotional tale about the perils of popularity and the thrill and inspiration of first love. From the Hardcover edition.

Glad I finally got around to this book! It‘s delightful, slightly heartbreaking, but ultimately hopeful. A fantastic story of non-conformity. And bonus, the audiobook is read by the late, great (but never forgotten) John Ritter! I so want to see the Disney+ adaptation now too.

5/5
I love this so much! I don't know how I've managed to make it to this ripe age without ever hearing of this book, but reading it was like uncovering a bit of magic and innocence. Bonus nostalgia points: the audiobook is read by John Ritter.

I‘m so late to this party, but wow. I 💜 it! I was the target audience for it when it came out in print in 2000. I was a sophomore in high school. I wish I‘d had access to it.

1: People might think I‘m too old to dress up? Which is stupid, teens deserve candy too! Idk. Coronavirus is a thing now. Still hoping for candy.
2: I‘m grateful that there are still ways to see friends, even with all the craziness of 2020.

Cosmos_Moon_River Never too old! I‘m 37 and dress up 🤗 I will be setting up a table at the end of my driveway with wrapped packs for kids to pick up... teens welcome! Have fun and hope you get some goodies! 4y

I love Jerry Spinelli‘s ability to put extraordinary characters in an ordinary world and show the reader what will happen. Stargirl is such a unique and fun character, and she gave me courage to be truly myself. I loved the philosophical chats with Archie and how well they described Stargirl. It was a fun fast read that will stick with me for a while.

This was a really cute read, I definitely think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it when I was younger. I found the beginning to be really, really slow, but it picked up about half way through. The last 50 or so pages I really enjoyed. I think that this is perfect for younger readers and has a really great message for young people especially girls. I love that even though she changed Stargirl reverted to her normal self.

"She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a cork board like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew."

This was probably my first ever YA book so many years ago and I'll always have a shift spot for it.

Stargirl is a book about a girl who changed herself to be accepted by others and didn't end up getting the attention she wanted. She entered a new school and ended up finding a boy of her interest. The boy, and other students, were interested in her but her weird actions made things difficult for them to be comfortable with her. She changed herself but nothing else changed. I enjoyed this book because I can relate being a 14yo in middle school.

This book was wonderful. Reading it I felt so nostalgic because it had a message almost all of us could relate to. The struggle of fitting in and being included in the “popular” group is a very real one and I think it was portrayed beautifully in this book. #stargirl #realisticfiction

I really, really wanted to like this book more.

Five stars for the message = it is okay to be different!! Stargirl is unlike any other teenager this school has encountered - singing happy birthday to strangers, playing the ukulele, and not caring what anyone thinks.

However, the writing seemed very immature even for Young Adult, and I simply wish some parts had more details and a chance to develop further.

But overall, not a bad book.

TheBogwitch I loved Stargirl when I read it. I had a teen daughter at the time. I think that made a huge difference, because I read the sequel, Love, Stargirl and couldn‘t get through it. Just not my vag anymore. 6y
TheBogwitch Recently. Read Love, Stargirl RECENTLY. D‘oh. 6y
KristenDuck @TheBogwitch I‘m sure this story would definitely make an impression on a teenager. Just not my favorite. 6y
TheBogwitch Hahaha! Bag! Not my BAG anymore! Why doesn‘t autocorrect work when you need it to? 6y
readinginthedark I know what you mean--I think her books are really meant more for pre-teens. I remember enjoying this in middle school but probably wouldn't read it again now. 6y

Basically a take on the whole "manic pixie dream girl" trope, but it is done well. It is a trope that I struggle with in theory, and thoroughly enjoy in reality. It feels reductionist to say Stargirl is only that, the quirky, eccentric romantic interest. Continued in comments.

Krisjericho But when you see the stock character defined, via the ever-useful, if fallible Wikipedia, as a girl who "exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures", you have to admit that it's a little on the nose. 6y

Stargirl was one of my faves growing up, and in Episode 26 of my podcast, journalist Britta Lokting joins me to help me figure out if I can still love it and also find it problematic at the same time. We also discuss high school stereotypes, conformity, popularity, Taylor Swift, Hillary Clinton, the MeToo movement, and my hilarious history as part of my high school‘s morning news show. click the link in my bio to listen! 🎧
