Winter Ghosts
Winter Ghosts | Kate Mosse
From the New York Times bestselling author of Sepulchre and Labyrinth-a compelling story of love, ghosts and remembrance. World War I robbed England and France of an entire generation of friends, lovers and futures. In Freddie Watson's case, the battlefields took his beloved brother and, at times, his peace of mind. In the winter of 1928, still seeking some kind of resolution, Freddie is travelling through the beautiful but forbidding French Pyrenees. During a snowstorm, his car spins off the mountain road. Freezing and dazed, he stumbles through the woods, emerging in a tiny village, where he finds an inn to wait out the blizzard. There he meets Fabrissa, a lovely young woman also mourning a lost generation. Over the course of one night, Fabrissa and Freddie share their stories. By the time dawn breaks, Freddie will have unearthed a tragic mystery that goes back through the centuries, and discovered his own role in the life of this old remote town.By turns thrilling, poignant, and haunting, this is a story of two lives touched by war and transformed by courage.

Ghosts, grief, madness, tragedy, and history made for a very entertaining story. The narrator for the audio format is wonderful; I didn‘t want to stop listening.

Though not festive in spirit, it‘s a perfect winter season read.❄️

#BookReport. The tagged book for #LMPBC was a surprise. It was a quick and enjoyable read and is my #DoubleSpin. And I really liked all my others except the Erdrich which was a low pick. I‘ve just started Love Hypothesis so no opinion yet and the other two are ok.

@julieclair Winter Ghosts will be on its way to you this week. @Jerdencon @BookBosomed1

julieclair Looking forward to reading it! 2y

HF with paranormal elements. Past and present will be connected to find a closure: to Freddy‘s sadness and to Fabrissa‘s story. I can understand why many people don‘t like this novel, it is slow, very sad with many details. But that is author‘s style. I read it in physical book. Some criticism to the novel is the date of some of the events but I think it could be symbolic to emphasized the end of that period of time. I want to avoid spoilers👇

Gissy I really liked it but it was so sad. If I like the story, those details just transport me to the story voyage. Unpopular opinion here 4⭐️Rating in GR is less.

Discounting that this was an odd read as the weather turned warmer I enjoyed. It was not as ri h or full of depth as her previous books (which may be why it sat on shelf for forever!) but I enjoyed the themes and her exceptional sense of time and place. Possible one for a reread come Halloween season . Interested was this positioned as YA ?

1st September read! Freddie Watson, grieving the loss of his brother in the war is caught in a snowstorm and takes refuge in an isolated village and there meets a beautiful, captivating woman. They spend a night talking of love and loss and war. But by daybreak, Fabrissa has vanished and Freddie realised he holds the key to an ancient mystery that leads him deep into the mountains, to a cave that has concealed an appalling secret for 700 years.

Quick, enjoyable read. After finishing, I read the author‘s note about the inspiration behind the story. I would like to learn more about Catharism, a medieval Christian heresy prevalent during the fourteenth century. If you‘re a fan of history, unrequited love, and ghost stories this will be a delicious read. Also, a perfect winter themed book, with the atmosphere and setting.

Hauntingly atmospheric with a really great cast of central characters. The timeslip between the 1920s and medieval France is so beautifully created with such descriptive elements you really do slip into the pages and become one with the book. Once you start the first page it's pointless trying to put it down, the story stays with you till you finish. Magical!

I don't know where or when I bought this book. But every time I look at it, I know why: this glossy cover, these lovely endpapers, the #deckleedge, & these evocative illustrations scattered throughout. This book is a work of art.
And lucky for me, it turned out to be a great read, too🙂📚❤️

This one came in the mail today too. I got it off #BookMooch Have I told y'all about bookmooch.com? It's a book swapping site, it's in different countries so anyone can use it. You list books you want to give and when someone mooches one you get points to Mooch a book when you find one that you want. The selection isn't always great, but if you are patient you never know what you'll find! More people = more books and a greater variety.

BethM I'm totally looking this up right now. I have a bunch at home that I wanted to get rid of or donate! 8y
Foragingfantasy When you mail out, make sure to ask for media mail rate. Usually it costs about $2.70 to send a book. 8y
See All 6 Comments
BethM @Foragingfantasy do you do international? 8y
Foragingfantasy @BethM I haven't because of shipping costs. If you Mooch from someone outside of your country I think it costs 3 points. That kind of balances out their shipping cost. 8y
