That Summer
That Summer: A Novel | Jennifer Weiner
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Summer comes another timely and deliciously twisty novel of intrigue, secrets, and the transformative power of female friendship. Daisy Shoemaker cant sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful, her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows shes got it good. So why is she up all night? While Daisy tries to identify the root of her dissatisfaction, shes also receiving misdirected emails meant for a woman named Diana Starling, whose email address is just one punctuation mark away from her own. While Daisys driving carpools, Diana is chairing meetings. While Daisys making dinner, Dianas making plans to reorganize corporations. Dianas glamorous, sophisticated, single-lady life is miles away from Daisys simpler existence. When an apology leads to an invitation, the two women meet and become friends. But, as they get closer, we learn that their connection was not completely accidental. Who IS this other woman, and what does she want with Daisy? From the manicured Main Line of Philadelphia to the wild landscape of the Outer Cape, written with Jennifer Weiners signature wit and sharp observations, That Summer is a story about surviving our pasts, confronting our futures, and the sustaining bonds of friendship.

This book didn‘t pull me in the way I found myself unable to put down other books by Weinberg. It covered important actual history & the importance of holding rapists accountable, but I guess ut ultimately felt unrealistic for her trying to nestle a novel into reality. Still, I admire her for attempting this difficult endeavor.

Great hook, great concept. Fell a little flat at the end with the resolution, but overall a good read. Easy to pass the time with. Trigger warning: contains assault

This is how everyone else packs, right? What to choose....

Linsy Most definitely! I had to take 9 lbs of books out of my checked bag so I didn't have to pay $100 for overloading it on my recent trip. Luckily, they all fit in my carry on. 3y

This one took me a long time to finish. I‘ve read all of the author‘s books. For some reason, this was my least favorite. Normally, I can read her books in one day, this took a couple of months. A decent chick lit read, just not my fave.

So this was my first book read of 2022, and boy, was it a rush. Two women with the same name, living very different lives, but attached in a very sad way. There's lots of social commentary on how women and girls are treated, that hit me hard in the gut. But, that just made me *need* to continue on, to know justice was served in some way. Absolutely recommend it to anyone who has ever made to feel less than, and wasn't believed. 💜

I really enjoyed this book! I had no clue it was a follow up to Big Summer until I was about 25% of the way in and saw a character‘s name in it. It‘s not a sequel in the sense of having the same characters and continuing their story line, but more of a different branch of the timeline with new characters. I can‘t wait for the 3rd one to come out - The Last Summer.

9-1-21: My 89th finished book of 2021! Daisy Shoemaker and Diana Starling meet due to an email mixup and become friends. Daisy is married, dealing with a teenage daughter and a small business while Diana is a consultant who jet sets around. But who is Diana really? Told from both women‘s perspective this story was not what I expected and I‘m so glad it wasn‘t! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣8️⃣9️⃣

Sometimes a book just exceeds you expectations, and this is one of those books!

Daisy is a homemaker with a successful husband and teenage daughter, Beatrice, in the Philadelphia suburbs.

One day, due to an incidental email mix-up, her life crosses paths with a woman named Diana, who lives anything but a simple life.

It is hard to explain this book without giving a lot away, but I can promise it is one worth reading.

Hm. This book was not as great of a read as Big Summer, and it did get more interesting towards the end. But all in all, I would say that this book was just ok. Not her best, but not her worst.

The tale of two Diana's, or maybe I Know What You Did ...That Summer. It looks like a beach read but is not light in content. Content warning for rape and long-term effects of said trauma. It is in the context of hashtag-metoo and grown men being followed by bad behavior from their earlier years, the conflict between the "boys will be boys" narrative and those who feel women should have bodily autonomy. ↘️

ReadingEnvy There is a more subtle (subversive?) story at play about how marriage can also be used to control a woman, and that entangles nicely with the more prominent storyline.↘️ 3y
ReadingEnvy I had a review copy but I encountered multiple timeline errors and food errors that I have verified lingered to the final version. Sloppy editing in that sense and also overall pacing and length made what could have been a thumbs up book less of a refommend 3y

When I pick up a Jennifer Weiner book, I know I‘m going to read about complex characters that even when I wouldn‘t choose their life, I want to understand their story. …It‘s interesting to me that I often consider perspective about #MeToo better in a fictional story.

Loops I‘ve been curious about this book - in your opinion, what are the pros and cons? It would help me to finally make a decision! 4y
marleed @Loops Let‘s see the cons would be trigger warnings for narcissism and sexual assault left unspoken. The pros would be this author‘s ability to create complex characters that you are interested in regardless of whether you would want them as a friend. Also, fictional #metoo scenarios provide me a perspective I don‘t have IRL where I may be biased based on my opinions of the event in question. Oh setting is great too. (edited) 4y
Loops @marleed thank you! I will give it a try! 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ The first Jennifer Weiner book I‘ve read in ages; the premise caught my eye. This story illustrates the varying degrees of bullshit sexual assault women/girls often endure while simultaneously addressing how toxic masculinity is bred and cultivated. These are excellent and powerful points. However, I didn‘t like how the new female friendship unfolded at all. So melodramatic and unrealistic in an otherwise believable story. ⬇️

Trying to get into this book, and the timeline on the very first page has me confused. She is asked in May to be a mother's helper for the summer...but one of her methods she uses to coerce her father for his permission is a Christmas present? So she's being asked to do this an entire year in advance?? 🤔

britt_brooke I‘m reading this now, too, and early on found some of the timelines confusing, but this looks like poor editing to me. The whole Christmas present thing doesn‘t fit at all. (edited) 4y

JW didn't disappoint-Two women with nearly the same email addresses connect. Their budding friendship isn't what it seems. Diana's journey of past betrayl, innocence, and shame has crippled her in many ways. And vengence now could destroy her new sweet friend Diana"Daisy's" life. Diana's decisions could free her from the dark pain she harbors, but at what cost? Cape Cod was a hot bed of turmoil "That Summer", maybe this summer the tide will turn.

I keep thinking I‘m going to stop reading Weiner, but I‘m glad I‘ve continued. This is a novel about #MeToo but also about the choices women make, how we are judged for those choices, how we judge ourselves, and the societal pressures that lead to many of those choices. It‘s really good.

britt_brooke I haven‘t read her in years, but I think I‘ll give this one a go. #stacked 4y

I love this author. Her books just keep getting better. I like that she's body positive. And she throws in style elements that give her characters extra depth. Like clothes and interior design.

Diana gets a job on the Cape one summer. And something awful happens. And you're just going to have to read this to find out how she deals with it.

THIS is my favorite Jennifer Weiner book. There are important topics tackled in this story about two Dianas - rape, family dynamics, homosexuality, teenage angst & more. There is Diana A, or "Daisy" as her husband has renamed her; & Diana B, whose identity has also been taken away but in a very different way. Both Daisys' inner voices becomes louder & by the end they are able to speak up for themselves, for teenaged daughters & for friends.

vlwelser I'm even more excited to dive into this one now. Great review! 4y
