I have mixed feelings about the main character but love her love interest and her friends. Most of the book was a 3 star, but the ending boosted it up. The repetition throughout was annoying. I find that to be a popular literary device in fantasy/witchy stories, and it isn't my favorite. I feel like the author doesn't trust the reader to understand without repetition. I will read the next book.

I wasn‘t sure I was planning to read our #skeletoncrew #buddyread this #scarathlon, but then I saw it on hoopla and decided to give it a try. I definitely feel conflicted about this one. I ended up liking the plot line enough that I started book 2 right away cause it ended on a major cliffhanger and I‘m dying to find out what happens, but I disliked basically all of the characters and found myself getting annoyed by the author pretty frequently.

Prairiegirl_reading Shoot, I didn‘t know this was a series. 😕 12mo

This book ended in a way where I now need to pick up the 2nd book and I didn‘t even really like this book! The MC drove me absolutely nuts, but the 2nd doesn‘t seem to be from her point of view and I‘m super intrigued by this world!

I finished our #skeletoncrew #buddyread early this morning before work, to start the #Fridaythe13th readathon. This book was a lot of fun, with great characters and lots of humour. Definitely a nice cozy read for the #pumpkinspicereadathon!

I tried to write something coherent but I just ended up babbling, which is a good thing. Bottom line is I liked it so we‘ll just go with that.

Think a small town like Stars Hallow set in the Midwest where the Missouri and Mississippi meet, a type-A main character like Leslie Knope, a grumpy farmer love interest, witches, and the end of the world as we know it.

3⭐️ This started off really fun and interesting, but became repetitive and dragged. Definitely like the set up for the next in the series so I'll be checking that out, but I had higher hopes for this one.

The 2nd witchy romance I‘ve read this month. Though both have grumpy love interests & MC‘s with abandonment issues, they‘re totally different. STBM is Fantasy proper (with creatures, etc) — not just “magical.” Emerson, who owns a bookstore, admits to a “not-so-private YA paranormal addiction,” & that feels right. I enjoyed this, including Em‘s feminist rants & high opinion of herself (which annoyed some). I liked the town & her friend group. 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: I had some issues with the writing. The first sex scene was especially awkward (with a random POV switch, in which the reader is suddenly addressed?), & I hate it when an author includes trendy vocab (e.g. “AF”). I‘m not sure I fully understand what happened with Skip? And the end was too riddled with cliff-hangers for the story to feel fully complete (even for a series installment). Still, the world was fun & I‘ll happily return to it. (edited) 2y

Witchy romcom alert! Emerson is surprised to discover that magic is real and her whole town is full of witches - including herself. She lost her memories with her power a decade ago but now it is coming back, at the same time dark magic is overtaking her town. I really loved the story but I hated Emerson. She was so annoying! But the supporting cast of friends made up for it & I'll read the sequel since it will be from someone else's POV thank god

4.5/5 stars 🌟 rom-com meets all the witchiness. 🧙‍♀️ This one had some plot twist I definitely didn‘t see coming. It‘s also set up perfectly for a sequel - which I‘d be first in line for. #witchesoflitsy 💚

Hmmmm what can I say about this book... I enjoyed the storyline, which the authors perfectly set up for a sequel. I enjoyed the characters and felt like some of them needed larger roles. However, the main character was not likable at all, I actually found her personality to be overbearing, and arrogant. And if I read the word patriarch one more time, ugh, it was just a bit much.

Sadly, I can't say I would recommend this book...

I‘m a mood reader, so I‘ve compiled WAY more options for my #Scarathlon2022 TBR than I‘ll ever need…but here‘s my ~official~ list!

The first two are titles I‘ll definitely get to. One is a book club choice for my short stories book club with friends I‘ve had since high school. The second is the book club selection for my online book club with friends from college. We took a few years off after graduation but have been reading together since 2012!

monalyisha I have to remember to count *each* short story towards my points (is that right, @StayCurious? And do I also count points for the book as a whole?). And there will be *plenty* of picture books in there as I gear up for an entire month of spooky Storytimes at the Library. 👻 2y
StayCurious Each short story counts as a full book but you wouldn‘t count the book as a whole on top of that. Still, shorts are a great way to gain points! And picture books counts as full books too 2y
monalyisha @StayCurious Got it. Thank you! 2y

So this was a fun read! One of the authors is a “local” writer and I totally got the St Charles vibe when reading about St Cyprian! This is the first in a series and I can‘t wait to get the next book. Which is gonna be a wait since this one just came out 🤣. If you‘re looking for a strong female drive witchy themed read here ya go!

I don't usually read books to match the season, but a witchy book by a local author seemed like a good idea ?

Emerson Wilde, a small town book store owner, one day discovers that she is a witch. And so are many of her friends and townspeople.

The "I am woman, hear me roar" element got a bit heavy-handed and repetitive for my taste.

This is the first in a planned series of three.
