Geneva | Richard Armitage

A bold and unpredictable debut thriller set in the biotech world (and deceptive beauty) of Switzerland, by acclaimed actor Richard Armitage. Nobel Prize-winning scientist Sarah Collier has taken a step back from work to spend more time with her family. Movie nights with her husband Daniel and their daughter Maddie are a welcome respite from the scrutiny of the world's press. As much as it hurts, it's good to be able to see her father more too. He's suffering from Alzheimer's and needs special care. Sarah has started to show tell-tale signs of the disease too. She's been experiencing blackouts and memory loss. It's early days but she must face the possibility that she won't be there to see her daughter grow up. Daniel, a neuroscientist himself, is doing his best to be supportive but she already knows that she will have to be the strong one. For all of them. So when Sarah is invited to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference in Geneva she declines, wanting to stay out of the public eye--that is until Daniel shows her the kind of work that the enigmatic Mauritz Schiller has been developing. Flown first class to the spectacular alpine city and housed in a luxury hotel, Sarah and Daniel are thrust back into the spotlight. As they try to shut out the noise of the public media storm, in private Sarah is struggling with her escalating symptoms. And the true extent of what Schiller has achieved is a revelation. This is technology that could change medicine forever. More than that, it could save Sarah's life. But technology so valuable attracts all kinds of interest. Wealthy investors are circling, controversial blogger Terri Landau is all over the story, and someone close to Schiller seems bent on taking advantage of the situation for themselves. Sarah feels threatened and does not know who to trust--including herself. Far from being her lifeline Schiller's technology may be her undoing. As events spiral out of control, Sarah and Daniel are faced with the ultimate question: how far would you go for someone you love?

Chilling. The thought of someone you trust being in control of your life when you have issues with memory and not being sure what is real is terrifying.

The Litsy reviews for this book have been brutal but I really enjoyed it. I was entertained! Considering he‘s been working with Harlan Coben so much in the last several years, it felt as I expected it to: fast paced page turner requiring some suspension of disbelief, but hey, it‘s brain candy! I‘d certainly give another if his books a go.

I absolutely adore Richard Armitage, and I respect his refusal to use a ghost writer, so it is with a heavy heart that I say that maybe he should have taken on a writing partner. This was... not great. I would have bailed but I needed a book set in a landlocked country. Plus RA's voice. Even when he's talking rubbish 😆 It could make an ok-ish mindless entertainment B-movie, I guess, so maybe he should have tried script writing instead.

julesG Just what I thought. 😁 9mo

Predictable and not very plausible. I think this would have made a good film though.

Librarybelle I was wondering about this…admittedly, every time I see this I think Mr Thornton from North and South wrote a book??? 😂 10mo

Caroline2 Oh no!! I love Richard so I was hoping this would be good. But I must admit the blurb sounded cliched. 😬 (I still bought it for 99p on my kindle tho obvs 😂) 10mo
Andrew65 Oh. No 😫 10mo
Hooked_on_books I feel bad for not commenting on any of your posts from this challenge, but Litsy is not alerting me that I‘ve been tagged by you! You have my handle correct, so I don‘t know what the problem is. It‘s clearly not you. 9mo
julesG @Hooked_on_books Don't worry, the same thing is happening to me with tags. Strangely it's not tags by specific people that don't make it to me, it's just that some are getting through and some aren't. And I am terrible at commenting/communication at the moment - my brain isn't playing along (bilingualism, brain fog and busy bee seem to not go well together atm). 9mo

North & South, Vicar of Dibley & Robin Hood ERASURE!!! Best know for the Hobbit, indeed.

But also - who knew Richard Armitage was writing books now?

Ruthiella He totally stole the show in Robin Hood…he made bad look so good! 🤩 12mo
DGRachel He‘s also an amazing audiobook narrator and I would listen to that man read the phone book. 12mo
julesG I saw this book in a list somewhere and was wondering whether the name was just a coincidence. Guess the British series are too 'niche' and Robin Hood is too old. Although, given the Sycamore Gap Tree coverage people might have re-watched. 12mo

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Ruthiella, didn‘t he! I have a work friend with a Richard Armitage obsession - we work at different locations now (boo) but she used to have his face on a key ring 😂 she made me watch Robin Hood - lent me her DVDS and asked for regular updates. 12mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @DGRachel, he does the audiobook narration for this! I looked him up on audible and he certainly has done a lot ☺️ 12mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, I did the same thing when it crossed my desk 🤣 I know that you are right - the British stuff is older and niche but he was in Captain America for 2 seconds and I can‘t place him in Alice in Wonderland… so it‘s frustrating that he‘s been in so many wonderful things but these are what he‘s “best known for”. 12mo
