Another lovely #Persephone. No spinster lit this time but a story that starts off as a Cinderella one (plain girl meets her prince) but ends somewhere completely different. Not my favorite but I did spend some pleasant hours with Emily Fox-Seton and Lord Walderhurst.

#WeeklyForecast 18/22

I am in the middle of two books for #ReadingAfrica2022 that I hope to finish this week. Also I want to treat myself to reading one #Persephone book a month. They really are the ultimate comfort reading. This month‘s is the tagged one.

squirrelbrain Lovely idea for a treat! 💕 3y
LeahBergen I loved this Persephone. 😊 3y
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen That is certainly good to know! 3y

Megabooks Sometimes we just need something comforting. Especially people like us who read (and usually enjoy) a lot of sad books. 💜 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks That is so true! It‘d be interesting to explore why we read so many sad books 🤔 3y
Megabooks I‘ve wondered that as well. I find a lot of meaning in sad books that speaks to me. Plus you know how I like to find spots of hope. I think those are the books that move me enough to bump to five stars. They feel more true to life (at least mine). 3y
Suet624 I wonder about why I read so many sad books too. Light reads are few and far between. 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks @Suet624 Those kind of Books are the ones that make me think most and that can stay with me. They are indeed the only ones that can be five star reads. Light reads I choose are mostly comforting, like the the Persephone‘s, or thrillers/mysteries. They hardly ever are worth 5 stars in my opinion though. Interesting! 3y

In this lovely Persephone edition, Emily is often taking a #walkinthepark as she is given the privilege of event planner at a country estate for a month. Lady Bayne is playing matchmaker for her widowed cousin, the Marquis, and she has many #sassy ladies lined up for him to meet.

What do you do with the beautiful bookmark included with each book? Tuck it back in? Or use it in other books?

#funfridayphoto These are the books on my nightstand. Jane Eyre and Middlemarch are my all time favorite books, so they're always on my nightstand. The other Frances Hodgson Burnett book is one I've been thinking about starting for a couple of days. No clue if it would sustain me after an alien abduction.

LeahBergen This is a lovely little read. 💗 8y
EvieBee @LeahBergen Good to know! Hoping to start it this afternoon. 😄 8y

Because of the fireplace debacle, the to-read pile is in boxes and the bottom is at the top so to speak, so I'm reading The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgson Burnett in this gorgeous Persephone Books edition. I love the design of these - a plain cover and a gorgeous print inside. I'd take a wallpaper of this one.

Reviewsbylola Those endpapers! 😍 8y

#HolidayRead 2: This was wonderful and somewhat disarming. What starts as a conventional rags-to-riches marriage plot soon gives way into an incisive examination of marriage from the perspective of two women. A great edition from #PersephoneBooks too.

For everyone here who (like me) has listed Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess as one of their childhood faves....#PersephoneBooks has republished one of her adult novels and when I discovered it I #CouldntPutitDown #SomethingForSept

LeahBergen @RealLifeReading Isn't it funny how that happens? I swear, I think I picked this one up at the very moment that I would most enjoy it. Book appreciation is so very personal and random. Ha! 8y

Before there was Lady Edith Crawley, there was the 1901 tale by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Making of a Marchioness.
