pickA charming book about two sisters in the early 20th century- a time in which wealthy American girls were sometimes wedded to destitute British Aristocrats as a trade of mutual benefits. Not a fair trade in the case of timid Rosalie Vanderpoel, who finds herself wedded to the brutish Sir Nigel. As her sister Betty becomes involved to further investigate the situation, the book becomes compulsively readable. A pleasure to read 💕

Second Persephone trip in the books. 📚
pickLoved it! Very well-written book about the ties between England and America, particularly at the turn of the 20th century, crumbling English manors, and abusive relationships. FHB tends to romanticize the medieval ages (let‘s not forget they‘re also called “the Dark Ages”), blames bad stewardship instead of Industrialization for the crumbling properties, and treats “business” as all 1 thing. Still, I recommend this highly enjoyable read.
Some #oldcoolbooks with a pretty #spine design.(I love the little 🐘 on the one in the middle.)

This #Persephone is about American heiresses crossing the Atlantic to marry impoverished British aristocrats. They infused the Brits with #AmericanMoney and in turn adopted the titles & “ruled their lands as well”, so to speak. These marriages were happening frequently at the turn of the century, so much so that the ships were said to be crossing back and forth across the Atlantic like the weaving of a shuttle, hence the title. 💸💸💸

I love Persephone books, but I find the cost (+ shipping) is a little extravagant for me to go out and just buy them for myself, so for Christmas I gave my brother a #wishlist of Persephone books and he is very likely to get me exactly what I ask for, in fact he will probably just get the very first one listed! #jingleshelves
