The daughter of an affluent Black family pieces together the connection between a childhood tragedy and a beloved heirloom in this moving novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Black Cake, a Read with Jenna Book Club Pick When ten-year-old Ebby Freeman heard the gunshot, time stopped. And when she saw her brother, Baz, lying on the floor surrounded by the shattered pieces of a centuries-old jar, life as Ebby knew it shattered as well. The crime was never solved--and because the Freemans were one of the only Black families in a particularly well-to-do enclave of New England--the case has had an enduring, voyeuristic pull for the public. The last thing the Freemans want is another media frenzy splashing their family across the papers, but when Ebby's high profile romance falls apart without any explanation, that's exactly what they get. So Ebby flees to France, only for her past to follow her there. And as she tries to process what's happened, she begins to think about the other loss her family suffered on that day eighteen years ago--the stoneware jar that had been in their family for generations, brought North by an enslaved ancestor. But little does she know that the handcrafted piece of pottery held more than just her family's history--it might also hold the key to unlocking her own future. In this sweeping, evocative novel, Charmaine Wilkerson brings to life a multi-generational epic that examines how the past informs our present.

This is the first time I‘ve seen more than one book that I wanted on the BOTM selections. I decided on this one. What did you pick? #botm

Wasn't super excited about #botm selections but it's my birthday month so I had to get something so that I could get my free birthday book 😁 I liked Black Cake and Good Dirt does sound good so that was the obvious choice for me.

cariashley Ooh wow didn‘t realize selections were out! I‘m glad there are 7 choices, but not loving these either this month. 2d

It‘s been almost 3 years since I read & loved Wilkerson‘s debut novel! Her latest centers around the after-effects of trauma. The wealthy Freeman family has a long history, but for Ebby in particular, she feels defined by the tragedy that took her 15 year old brother. Multiple perspectives, covering modern & historical time periods, I‘m not surprised to see this as a #BOTM pick! I didn‘t love it as much as her first, but can‘t wait for her third!

#netgalley - pub 6th Feb UK

This is the second novel by the author of Black Cake. I may be going against the grain but I much preferred this one - some other early reviewers felt that the old jar featured in this book didn‘t have as much impact as the cake recipe in the first but I liked it.

There was quite a time distance between the tales of slavery (and the jar) and the modern day, which perhaps lessened the impact but the modern-day ⬇️

squirrelbrain …storyline was fascinating and compelling. My favourite fiction book of the year so far. 1w
TrishB High praise 👍🏻 will keep my eye out for it. 1w
vlwelser That is a beautiful cover. The US one is sort of meh. The book itself is fab, obviously. 1w

BarbaraBB That is high praise indeed. I am not especially drawn to this kind of story but now I must rethink! 7d
Chelsea.Poole I‘ve been put off by this one, but your review has also changed my mind like @BarbaraBB and I agree with @vlwelser this is a fabulous cover. The colored blob covers (like the US edition) are overdone and I‘m ready to leave that trend behind. 7d
squirrelbrain @barbarabb @chelsea.poole @trishb - I hope I‘ve not over-hyped it for you now. 😬 I agree about the cover @vlwelser - just checked out the US one and that style is getting very boring / same-y now. 🤷‍♀️ 6d

A story of redemption, forgiveness and family. Where you come from influences who you are in the present. A wonderfully written story with a diverse cast of characters. Highly recommend!

Book 4/100 of the year.

I loved this quite a lot. Black Cake was better but that was going to be hard to outdo.

I should just give up trying to improve my #NetGalley percentage 😅

Just got sent this ARC and I‘m so excited. I loved Black Cake ❤️

Also, this cover is stunning!

kelli7990 I‘m still trying to improve my Netgalley percentage even though I‘ve had a lot of ARCs sent to me. I think I‘m going to have to finish a lot of the ARCs that get sent to me instead of bailing on them. I know that I‘ll finish the ARC I‘m reading right now but I don‘t know about the next ARC that I have to read. 6mo
Amor4Libros I only have 3 ARCs for August and I‘ve already read 1. I‘m trying to read as much of my backlist as I can, and trying to not request much! Good luck to us! 😅 @kelli7990 6mo
ErikasMindfulShelf I keep telling myself not to request anymore but then something interesting shows up. I‘ll never be able to improve my percentage. 😂 6mo
Amor4Libros @ErikasMindfulShelf Right?! It‘s never-ending! 🤣 6mo
