Trail Through Time: The Chronicles of St. Mary's Book Four
Trail Through Time: The Chronicles of St. Mary's Book Four | Jodi Taylor

The fourth book in the bestselling British madcap time-travelling series, served with a dash of wit that seems to be everyone s cup of tea. Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary s Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don t call it time travel these historians investigate major historical events in contemporary time. And they aren t your harmless eccentrics either; a more accurate description, as they ricochet around history, might be unintentional disaster-magnets. The Chronicles of St. Mary s tells the chaotic adventures of Madeleine Maxwell and her compatriotsDirector Bairstow, Leon Chief Farrell, Mr. Markham, and many moreas they travel through time, saving St. Mary s (too often by the very seat of their pants) and thwarting time-travelling terrorists, all the while leaving plenty of time for tea. In A Trail Through Time, Max and Leon are reunited and looking forward to a peaceful lifetime together. Sadly, that doesn t even last until lunchtime. The action races from seventeenth-century London to Ancient Egypt and from Pompeii to fourteenth-century Southwark as the historians are pursued up and down the timeline, playing a perilous game of hide-and-seek before seeking refuge at St. Mary swhere new dangers await them. Overwhelmed, outnumbered, and with the building crashing down around them, will this spell the end of St. Mary s? Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller, a national bestseller, or a Hugo or Nebula award-winner, we are committed to publishing quality books from a diverse group of authors."

My daughter spent the day at Pompeii, so I had to post this perfect framing of her photo of Vesuvius for this book I read recently, where an extremely important part of the book takes place in Pompeii. #serieslove2023 @TheSpineView @Andrew65 @julesG

TheSpineView Great photo! 1y
TheBookDream Oh wow 1y
julesG 😂 I rewatched the Dr Who episode of Volcano Day with my daughter the other day. We were wondering how crowded it must have been that day. Shame the Dr didn't bump into Max, or Loki. 🤪 1y

Texreader @TheSpineView @TheBookDream @andrew65 @dabbe It sure makes it very real the line of sight residents had of Vesuvius when it was erupting. Just imagine! 1y
Texreader @Andrew65 That is a very keen observation!! 1y
Texreader @julesG Now honestly I‘m going to have to ask the kids to find that episode (they‘re Dr Who fans) so I can watch it! 1y
julesG It's the first or second of the fourth series. 1y
Andrew65 @julesG I‘ve a feeling it was the second one. 1y
julesG @Andrew65 You're right. The Fires of Pompeji is the second. Donna and the Doctor have to reunite first (love the Adipose, they are so cute). 1y
Andrew65 @julesG My favourite one is still The Girl in the Fireplace! 1y

Book 4 of the series, this may be the best yet. But when I started it I was so disappointed. Book 3 ended with what felt like a deus ex machina, and this book started with chases and emergency jumps through time to escape the mysterious Time Police. I hate car chases in movies—they bore me to no end. I was afraid this entire book was exactly that—a long car chase. But it turned out the author was far more clever than I gave her credit for by ⬇️

Texreader ending book 3 the way she did and how the events in that book mattered so much to this book. A smart move! As always, full of historical stories, action, adventure, near death and death, sci fi moments, and sexy moments, tears, and laughter, a little dystopia thrown in—this series has it all. Quite a fantastic book. Whatever you do, don‘t read them out of order. #serieslove2023 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView (edited) 1y

I‘ve purposefully been reading everything about Italy I can get my hands on, but not this book, which I‘m reading for #serieslove2023. This wonderful time travel series can land its characters anywhere. So ironically, part of it is set in Pompeii! I wish I were going to see Pompeii but my daughter will during her studies in Rome. If we get a chance after I get to Rome, we‘ll try to visit to Ostia Antica.

@TheSpineView @Andrew65

julesG Volcano Day! This sets the groundwork for a wonderful friendship. 2y
julesG And now I want to reread the book. Not that I haven't done so only a few weeks ago and continue to audiobook reread snippets of the book when my daughter listens to it. 🙄 2y
TheSpineView Great opening for a story. 2y
Andrew65 Hoping to get to this series soon. Well done 👏👏👏 2y

Another solid installment of the St. Mary‘s crew. This one starts right where the last one ends and doesn‘t let up on the action until the end.

Maxwell finds herself in an alternative timeline's version of St. Mary's.

It was fun and there were times I really did laugh out loud, but it's been 2 years since I read the previous books, so I found I'd forgotten too much to really follow everything.

Equal parts romp & emotional rollercoaster, as always.

The insight into Max‘s childhood was ugly & horrible, leaving me evermore enamored of the person that she fought to become; Leon‘s response to her story is the most tender & gorgeously-heartbreaking thing in the series to date.

I do wish the book hadn‘t ended on a giant cliffhanger, though. I‘m morally opposed to giant cliffhangers.

The more I read of this series, the more I'm getting into it. After the cliffhanger ending of book 3, I needed to start this right away!! #TimeTravel

Leniverse Funny, I had the opposite reaction. I liked the first book best and gave up on the series altogether after book three. 😂 5y

Max/Not-Max and Leon/Not-Leon are running through history being chased by the Time Police!

Utterly ridiculous plot involving Pompeii, an all-out assault/defense of St. Mary‘s, explosions, more explosions, and tea!

Roll your eyes all you want but this series is fun and addictive. 😄

‘Getting things done at St Mary‘s is a bit like elephants mating,‘ explained Peterson. A remark that caused some mystification. ‘You know – there‘s frantic activity at high level. There‘s screaming and stamping. A lot of dust is raised. Nothing happens for two years and then you‘re crushed by the result.‘ 🐘
I love these books! #waywithwords

No wonder I love Max, we have the same taste in books: "Since there weren‘t any out there, I needed the comfort of familiar friends in here. I pulled down Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, a book of Sherlock Holmes short stories, the first Harry Potter, and finished off with Tom Holland‘s Persian Fire. That should keep me quiet until teatime. I avoided Thomas Hardy because everyone should, and anyway, I was depressed enough." #janeite

When each book takes you through several perilous journeys every time, although they're always fun, it can be a little daunting to think about where the author will take the characters next; especially when time travel is already a major plot point. How to solve this? Let's change the universe instead. Playing in the multiverse, we get a new bad guy, an old one, some good guys return, and all the shenanigans we love continue in full force. Yay!

ralexist Not yet. I'm not sure I've seen them as anything other than an eBook and I'm not a huge fan reading in that format. But maybe a novella might be okay. 7y

This seems to be a bit of a controversial entry to the series—I enjoyed it, but it definitely constitutes a major shift in the series.

LauraBrook It does, and I was worried about the next entry bc of it. But it's still the same old disaster-magnet St Mary's, where if anything can go wrong it will. 😊 Love this gang! 8y

#augustphotochallenge #day30 Here is my small #bookhaul from this month. I'm saving my pennies! purchased two books: A Trail Through Time (audible credit) and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (not pictured). The rest shown are new freebies - short stories from Audible.

tapgurl I just finished Jodi Taylor's second book and have the third on hold in the library:). And I think I'm number 135 in line for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! 8y
annahenke @tapgurl you should download the free st. Mary's stories in the meantime! 8y

Well, this is my least favorite of #thechroniclesofstmarys
What was the problem? I had some issues with the events of the last book and this one. The result was that this book was slower and much less compelling. However, Zara Ram's narration was excellent as usual. #audiobook
Due to the recommendations of my fellow littens, I will be continuing the series. I've been reassured that it gets better. #timetravel #adventure

I hate to admit it, but I'm just not enjoying this St. Mary's adventure as much as the others. Fellow fans, do we get over this hump eventually??

DGRachel I found the previous one devastating, but yeah, this one wasn't as good as the others and I nearly gave up on St. Mary's. It does get better. #6 was my favorite of the full length novels, so I would definitely recommend sticking with the series. 8y
LauraBrook Stick with it! I'm almost done with #6, and am ready to go straight into 7 afterwards. 8y
