I liked this book. You can see the glimmers of the man Cork will become and the forces that shaped him into that man. I couldn‘t understand though why it took so long for Cork‘s father, Liam, to question a particular suspect who seemed obvious to me from pretty early on. #audiowalk

Suet624 I‘ve asked you this before but how long did it take to do that walk? 5h

I‘ve got about 3 hours left in this book. It‘s interesting to see Cork as a 12 year-old boy. We‘ve gotten glimpses of him at that age before, but this is the first full-length novel where we get to see him with his parents. #audiowalk

I'm disappointed because I was hoping I might like this as much as WE DO WHAT WE DO IN THE DARK by Michelle Hart, a book I loved about a first year university student in a relationship with an older woman, as much as that story has been told. But I'm finding it overwritten and pretentious, almost too formulaic in an MFA literary fiction kind of way? I might have loved this if I'd been able to read it closer to the protagonist‘s age, though.

I wasn‘t in the mood for either The Mystery Writer or David Copperfield, so I went with a world I‘m really familiar with — that of Cork O‘Connor. I think I just needed something I didn‘t have to concentrate on. Cork is only 12 here, and his father is alive. #audiowalk

Companion to The Outsiders, this highlights the friendship of Bryon and Mark as they get older and have different interests from each other.

willaful A fav of mine when I was young, but I can guess it didn't age well! 6d
Eggs @DieAReader It happens sometimes 😕 6d
Eggs @willaful Might be a similar scenario to read The Outsiders now, 25 years after reading it … 6d
TheSpineView Kudos for finishing when it was lackluster. 5d

Finished this for my #QUABC 40-Book Challenge prompt: “A National Book Award winner.” It was the 2023 Winner for Young People & it was delightful. I think everyone can relate to the trauma/drama of middle school & Sanat captures it in all its glory in his illustrations & text. Set mainly on a life-changing school trip to Europe, I enjoyed reading it while listening to the Spotify “mix tape” playlist he includes the QR code for.💙

suvata I‘m doing that challenge as well. But, I have only completed 15 books so far. The National Book Award winner category is going to be difficult for me. 1w
DebinHawaii @suvata This was a good quick & easy way to knock it out if you haven‘t read it. 1w
suvata @DebinHawaii I‘ll keep that in mind. Thanks. 1w
