This was a rather concise explanation of Ukrainian history region by region which is immensely helpful when dealing with such a contentious shifting of borders. It was conversational. Occasionally, the editing was a bit lax but the info was great. Feel free to use 5-calls to express your thoughts on Ukraine and fascism in our country.

Suet624 I appreciate you mentioning this book. I've been looking for some background information. I feel so badly about what is going on there. 5d
Nebklvr @Suet624 I was in the same boat. I feel it expanded my knowledge. I knew a bit about the Great Famine but not much else. 5d
Suet624 Do they talk about the religious differences/friction between Russia and Ukraine too? 5d

Nebklvr @Suet624 Yes. Quite a bit actually. 5d
Suet624 Good. I‘ve been trying to explain that to people recently because of the whole Pope/Zelenskyy and Vance/Putin (Opus Dei and Orthodox vs Roman Catholic) situation. There is such a big religious story going on and no one in the media talks about it 5d
Nebklvr @Suet624 Mostly described in terms of why different religions in different sections and some of friction politically die to dif religions and also some $ issues 4d

I bought this over a decade ago, and it‘s been sitting on my shelf since then. It felt like the right time to pick it up and I‘m so glad I did. It‘s packed with history and information but in a way that‘s easily absorbable.

Readers who enjoyed this might also enjoy "The Tunnels" by Greg Mitchell, and "Stasiland" by Anna Funder.

It's Jill Paton Walsh, so if course it was incredibly thought-provoking and philosophical. A proper Art of Soul book, @BarbaraJean. I finished it in the midnight hours when I couldn't sleep and haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Beautiful writing, highly recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2

willaful I don't think I've read any of her adult books, but I adored A Chance Child. 13mo
BarbaraJean Ohhh, I miss Art of Soul!!! I had only read Walsh‘s children‘s books until we read Knowledge of Angels for Art of Soul. I‘ll have to check this one out! 13mo

'Behold: Kali Tragus, the Russian thistle.'

Making slow progress through this one, yet it's a steady one with much pleasure. So far, it's fabulous.
A dark modern fantasy steeped in Yiddish folklore, a road trip through the vastness of the USA and the heritage, myths and memories of its immigrants.

2.5/5⭐ This anthology of Yiddish stories translated into English is important from a cultural/religious standpoint. I can see it being used with great effect in a Jewish studies course. The editor did an excellent job organizing the stories and introducing each section with contextual information. However, the storytelling styles are very different from what I'm used to, often going on tangents and tedious to get through. #roll100

This is one of the only history books that I truly enjoyed, Kaplan's writing style is so full of life, it makes you feel as if you know the people present in the story. A journalistic/travelling way of explaining major events is so enjoyable! Definitely a worthy read, even for people that aren't interested in history

1. Eastern Europe
2. Maybe the Ocean or anywhere in Europe
3. Narnia or Hogwarts. I also just love some lush worldbuilding that includes mythology/folklore
