This is a new #ToBshortlist fav. May even be my zombie. 🤔 It made me think about intimacies beyond romance, like new friendship and even how violence can be intimate. I‘m still wrestling with it days later. It is quiet and subtle yet insistent in its plot and prose.

An ICC interpreter tries to navigate a life in The Hague as she becomes involved with a lover and friends and obsesses over the violence of a mugging and a dictator on trial.

Ruthiella @Megabooks Tags look good to me. I‘m glad you also liked this novel. It‘s so subdued, I can see how that might not appeal to many readers. But I really liked all its undercurrents. P.S. did you google that painting? I did and it IS unsettling! (edited) 2y

Ericalambbrown This is one of the most unique books I read this year! I loved it. The intimacies of what language conveys was also a a theme that stood out to me. How speaking the same language can imply a camaraderie that may not be there. Such a good book! 2y

Cinfhen Jennnnnnnnny......these pictures bring back such good memories 💕💕💕My summer plans are really fluid and I don‘t really know the dates I‘ll be in Philly. I know weekend of August 18 & 25 are not good. I‘m flying back on Aug 27th. I don‘t want to plan meetup this year in case I can‘t be there. If someone else wants to send out feelers and dates I can try my best to plan to be there. Regardless of me, there should definitely be a #PhillyMeetUp (edited) 5y

EadieB @Cinfhen Don‘t think I have time to plan a meet-up. I‘m leaving for New Orleans on Monday. I have a trip to Florida planned for 1st week of June. trip to Prince Edward Island during the beginning of August. Plus I babysit for my daughter‘s 3 children a couple days a week. Don‘t know many places in Philly. Where did you meet for the 1st one? Is that an option or just meet where we were last year? Do we have to do Philly? @MrBook 5y
