Blood and Circuses: A Phryne Fisher Mystery
Blood and Circuses: A Phryne Fisher Mystery | Kerry Greenwood
"A top-notch entry in this witty, hugely entertaining series." -Booklist Phryne Fisher is bored. Life has become too easy, too perfect. Her household is ordered, her love life is pleasant, the weather is fine. And then a man from her past arrives at her door. Alan Lee and his friends want her to investigate strange happenings at Farrell's Circus, where animals have been poisoned and ropes sabotaged. Mr. Christopher has been found with his throat cut in Mrs. Witherspoon's irreproachable boarding house, and Miss Parkes-an ex-performer-is charged with his murder. Phryne must go deep undercover to be effective. She must abandon her name, her title, her protection, her comfort-even her clothes. She must fall off a horse twice a day until she can stay on. She must sleep in a girl's tent and dine on mutton stew. And she must find some allies. Meanwhile in Melbourne, young, fresh-faced policeman Tommy Harris has to solve his own mysteries with the help of the foul-spoken harridan Lizard Elsie, or Miss Parkes will certainly hang. Can Phryne uncover the truth under the Big Top without losing her life? Kerry Greenwood is the author of more than 40 novels and six non-fiction books. She has received the Ned Kelly Lifetime Achievement Award from the Crime Witers' Association of Australia. When she is not writing, she is an advocate in Magistrates' Courts for the Legal Aid commission. www.phrynefisher.com

Phryne Fisher never disappoints, I liked that this one gives room to her shortcomings and weaknesses as well as her trademark skills.

Most of the plot is set in a travelling circus, so there was little on Australian culture, for the next adventure she's back in Melbourne. The two mysteries are my picks for #foodandlit

(The best part being, that they were already on my shelf ;)

Phyrne joins a travelling circus as a trick horse rider to figure out why the circus is experiencing a series of misfortunes, including a murder, that threaten to put it out of business.

Fun as ever, and I do like that this one takes Phryne away from her comforts and thrusts her into a whole new world. Mind you, I was kinda craving some of her delicious clothes and beautiful food (honestly, the way it's described, the adjectives go that way round) -- so I shall simply have to reread the next book immediately as well.

This one will be a good one to pick up and read in little bits while at work, since it'll be my... second? third? reread. I was feeling like reading about a character like Phryne... so heck, why not Phryne herself?

I discovered this fabulous series last year.

LaraS I just downloaded the first one from the library for my weekend reading! Do you have to read them in order or can you jump around the series? 4y
Eggs Pretty cover ❣️❣️ 4y
TheEllieMo @LaraS sorry, meant to reply to you yesterday but got distracted 🤦‍♀️ There‘s is a lot of character and relationship development in the series, so personally I‘d recommend they be read in order. 4y
LaraS Really enjoying the first one so far - thanks for the advice! 4y

I love Phryne Fisher. I love books about the circus and all things circus related. Yet somehow I didn't love this book. I still enjoyed it, but it felt a bit busy. There was too much going on I think. To me the chapters from the mobsters perspective was really unnecessary and the book would have been much better without them. Oh well, they can't all be winners!

Texreader Great review as always 4y

#7days7covers #covercrush #day6 I could pick any of these editions of the Phryne Fisher books for this challenge. Every one of them is gorgeous, though I think this one is the best, closely followed by Dead Mans Chest & Murder & Mendelssohn.

If you haven‘t already been tagged, consider yourself invited to join in!

sudi Love this one ❤ 5y
Lynnsoprano This is great, and I agree about the Murder & Mendelssohn cover. Hmm, I‘m only on day 4 😎 5y

#AugustABC #Day7 #GorgeousGirl Could only manage a few chapters of my book, heads still a bit sensitive, so I‘m gonna try & catch up on some challenges instead. Miss Phryne definitely fits the prompt for the 7th, she‘s ballsy, she‘s brave, she‘s elegant & she‘s most certainly gorgeous. If you haven‘t acquainted yourself with book Phryne yet, I highly recommend you do so. She‘s fabulous & fantastic. #phryneappreciationclub

kspenmoll Gorgeous cover! Such a fun series; I need to get back to it! 5y

#BookMail Pt2 This is one of my favourite Phryne covers, the combo of Phryne, the horse & the tent in such vivid colors just works so well. Plus I‘m a sucker for circuses! In this novel, Phryne goes undercover at a circus as a trick rider after the death of one of the performers. Even though her extended family rarely makes an appearance, there‘s a lot of new characters to meet, some appear again in later books. #phryneappreciationclub

Freespirit It's a vibrant cover 5y

Continuing the Phryne saga! This one was not my fave though. The circus/carnival folks were a little too stereotype-y for my tastes and Phyrne‘s obvious class privilege didn‘t come off so well. But on the other hand, clown sex?

Book 6 in my reread-through of the Phryne Fisher series via audiobook is one of my favorites! This is my 3rd time reading this particular book and I never get tired of it. Phryne sheds her cushy lifestyle to join the circus in disguise, to help solve the murder of Mr. Christopher/Christine. I highly recommend this series and especially the audiobooks. 5⭐️

Phryne is out of her element in this book, but it was an interesting change of pace. I liked this and now wonder how long it will be before my hold for #7 come in!

A darker Phryne Fisher story. But I'm pretty sure this one I'll remember as 'Clown Sex' Phryne. 🤡

Phryne joins the circus to help her friends discover who has been sabotaging it. For some reason this one didn't grab my interest as much as her previous books. I can't explain explain exactly what was different with this one. I usually like them. Maybe I've just read them too close together. #LitsyAtoZ #LetterB @BookishMarginalia

#24in48 Hour 12 Reading Challenge: A road trip to 3 bookish locations
1. Travel with a circus like in "The Night Circus" or "Blood and Circuses" which I just finished.
2. To see the Navajo Nation depicted in Tony and Anne Hillerman's stories.
3. To visit some small town that you find in so many cozy mysteries.

Wow, that was much darker than the previous books. Also, this one split the action between Phryne and other characters, which I didn't like as much. More Phryne, please! Still a good book, though. #phryneforever

I was excited to receive a copy of my favorite Phryne Fisher book on NetGalley. 🤓📚🤓 This tells the story of Phryne going to work at the circus in disguise, to solve the murder of a fellow circus performer named Mr. Christopher/Christine. Phryne sheds all of the luxuries she is used to and comes to appreciate how blessed she is. I love this series and highly recommend it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #PhryneFisher #NetGalley #favorite

Finished Bk3 of this Phryne Fisher anthology, I really need to buy the rest of this series they're so good. Very funny, very stylish and very very Australian. Phryne goes undercover in a circus as a stunt horse rider after one of the performers is murdered. In between bedding a clown, making friends with a bear & riding a horse standing up, she finds some very bad men and saves the circus.

LeeRHarry I love these, read them all so I'm now impatiently waiting for the next one!! 7y
Lizpixie @LeeRHarry I've read up to bk 6 now, I was hoping to get the next three in anthology form as well because the books are so short but you pay the same for either, which is ridiculous🤔 7y
LeeRHarry I know but I love the artwork on the non tv covers 😊 7y
